King’s Health Partners King’s Health Partners is one of the UK’s five Academic Health Sciences Centres. It brings together a world leading research led university (King’s College London) and three successful NHS Foundation Trusts (Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley). Introduction to the Role This new post will work in the dynamic and high achieving Fundraising Research and Cultivation & Stewardship teams with a primary focus on the delivery of strategic and bespoke projects for our Principal Gifts team (focused on £3m plus gifts). The Principal Gifts Team at King’s holds relationships with some of the very biggest philanthropists in the world, and works across all global markets to secure some of the most path-breaking gifts in UK fundraising. The Donor Engagement Officer will be a key enabler primarily for the Principal Gifts Team and will develop and execute a range of prospect research and cultivation and stewardship projects in relation to the engagement of our prospects and donors at the highest giving levels. This post will collaborate with colleagues to implement a donor relations strategy that reflects both the overall growth of the donor pipeline and long-term relationship development of prospects and donors. The successful candidate will have experience working in a Research, Prospect Management or Stewardship role with a proven track record of planning and delivering first-class and bespoke projects for high-level prospects and donors. The post-holder should be creative and proactive and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a capability to interact with senior management and high-level donors confidently. This role is based at the Waterloo Campus. to create a single fundraising function under the joint leadership of King’s College London and King’s Health Partners. Uniquely among British universities, King’s Fundraising & Supporter Development team has pioneered multiple successful fundraising campaigns, including the current World questions|King’s answers campaign. The World questions|King’s answers Campaign The World questions|King’s answers campaign is a £500m plus campaign to raise money for cancer, neuroscience & mental health, and leadership and society. The Chairman of the campaign is former British prime minister the Rt. Hon. Sir John Major KG CH. The Campaign Board is made up of leading members of British public life such as Mr Rory Tapner, CEO of Coutts & Co., Lord Charles Powell, and Lord Stanley Fink.

Job Description Post title: Donor Engagement Officer Department/Division/Directorate: Fundraising & Supporter Development Grade: 5 Responsible to: Fundraising Research Manager Role purpose: •

Create and facilitate a variety of bespoke projects and activities to cultivate long and meaningful relationships with our most significant donors and prospects

Assist Research Manager and Cultivation & Stewardship Manager in developing and implementing a donor relations strategy that reflects both the overall growth of the donor pipeline and long-term relationship development of prospects and donors, primarily at the £3 million + level

Provision and coordination of accurate and strategic information on high level individuals, charitable trusts and companies, to maximise philanthropic income

Identification and presentation of new fundraising prospects to help expand the Principal Gifts Function in line with fundraising targets

Develop, track and report on strategies for each donor and prospect; this will include processes for: timely correspondence based on donor preference, follow-up on action items identified in donor meetings and strategies to foster continued donor engagement

Contribute to overall research and stewardship strategy and planning and facilitate other duties as assigned

Role outline – main responsibilities Key objectives: 1. Identification of fundraising prospects •

Creatively identify areas for potential expansion of the Principal Gifts pipeline and manage the execution of proactive and reactive prospect finding projects, working with and delegating to other members of the research team where appropriate. This will include data mining activities.

Encourage and support others in the department to find and identify potential fundraising prospects.

2. Research •

Provide wide ranging network research to support the discovery of new, high level influencers.

Execute prospect mapping projects on key families and regions to support prospect strategy.

Contribute to the provision of prospect and donor information for specific campaign projects and with a focus on Principal Gifts.

Contribute to excellent information flow between the Strategy & Operations team and the Principal Gifts team, adding and updating new donor information onto the database and other records to ensure it is collectively accessible where appropriate.

Contribute to other aspects of prospect research when required and as directed by the Fundraising Research Manager. 10


Contribute to the preparation and regular review of fundraising tracking lists in line with Campaign priorities. Prepare gift acceptance research (ethical screening) for prospects.

Provide data from the database which will involve the provision and manipulation of Excel reports.

3. Stewardship & donor relations: In collaboration with the Cultivation & Stewardship Manager and Stewardship Officer, •

Proactively lead planning meetings with the relevant fundraising teams to determine appropriate and creative stewardship plans for donors.

Coordinate the delivery of highly creative and bespoke proposals and stewardship reports to convey gift impact and strengthen the relationship between the organisation and the donor.

Produce and distribute donor correspondence including timely acknowledgement letters, donor meeting summaries and periodic stewardship reports as directed by the Principal Gifts team.

Support the Principal Gifts team in the prioritization and execution of agreed-upon donor follow-up.

Organise the approval, procurement and installation of various donor recognition items (e.g. plaques, donor walls, signage, etc).

Serve as project manager for recognition events for our highest level gifts.

Communication & networking: •

Regular communication and collaboration with Fundraising Research Manager, Cultivation & Stewardship Manager and Director of Principal Gifts to review projects and priorities.

Develop and maintain excellent professional relationships in order to represent the team effectively and credibly in person, on the telephone and in correspondence with senior influential stakeholders within and beyond King’s.

Assimilate and share complex knowledge of familial and social relationships between donors and prospects.

Regular communication about prospects and projects with a range of people within the Fundraising & Supporter Development Department (most often with other Research team members and Fundraising staff). This will include providing them with information and recommendations about potential supporters and high-profile alumni as well as advising on research.

Communication with donors and alumni on the telephone, by email and in person at events and meetings. Occasional networking with other Fundraising professionals, attending networking events and sharing ideas.

Writing and editing donor reports, correspondence and publications to the highest standard

Decision making, planning & problem solving: •

Use initiative and assist in decision making to coordinate and implement ideas for the highest level of donor care

Work independently to plan and prioritise daily workload.

Manage and deliver research and projects to deadline for all assigned tasks.

Make judgement calls about the accuracy or relevance of information.

Use initiative to identify problems which may arise within a busy, high performing team and use judgement to help in their resolution.

Independently negotiate long and short-term deadlines simultaneously and respond to urgent and ad- hoc requests.

Proactively identify and allocate new prospects. This requires creative thinking to identify new potential connection and areas of affinity, problem solving and the use of initiative to allocate prospects effectively.

Will contribute to recommendations made about systems and procedures relating to fundraising prospects and the prospect pipeline.

Will contribute to planning of larger projects such as fundraising events and overseas trips.

Team work, teaching & learning support: •

Play an active part of the Strategy & Operations Team and Fundraising & Supporter Development Department. The role sits within Campaign, Research & Stewardship team which provides operational support for the team in its fundraising and alumni relations activities.

Work flexibly to provide cover for colleagues where necessary.

Sensory/physical demands & work environment: •

The post holder usually works in an open plan office environment with the usual office equipment (computer, keyboard, etc).

The majority of the working day will be spent using a keyboard and VDU.

Summary of terms and conditions of service This appointment is made under the King’s College London Terms and Conditions of Service for Professional Services Staff, a copy of which is available from the Human Resources department on request. Period of Appointment:

£26,264 - £30,424 per annum, plus £2,323 London allowance per annum 27 working days. Staff receive four additional closure days. Notification as to how these days are taken is circulated at the start of the academic year.

Superannuation This appointment is superannuable under the SAUL (applicable for Grades 1 to 5) pension scheme. Staff already superannuated under the NHS Superannuation Scheme may opt to remain in that scheme provided they fully satisfy the terms of the Medical School Employment (Superannuation) Direction 1993 and provided an application to do so is received by the NHS scheme trustees within three months of appointment to King’s College London. Alternatively staff may opt to participate in SERPS or take out a personal pension. Please note that the College does not provide an employer's contribution towards a private pension plan. The College operates PensionsPlus by which individuals increase their take home pay by reducing their NI contributions.

For staff who join either SAUL or USS pension schemes, you will automatically be entered into PensionsPlus (provided you would benefit from doing so). As a result your salary will be reduced so that you receive the PensionsPlus salary and a payment is made into your pension scheme instead. NB - NHS Superannuation Scheme: Medical Schools are classed as “Direction Employers” and some benefits of the NHS Scheme are not available to Direction members.
