Introduction

The legendary American philanthropist Mona Bismarck lived a glamorous and luxurious life, defying convention and sharing her good fortune to support the arts, fashion and culture.

Mona was one of the most glamorous and beautiful women in New York and, in 1933, was named "The Best Dressed Woman in the World", the first American to be so honored.

Her beauty and elegance captivated painters such as Salvador Dalí, Leonor Fini, Bernard Boutet de Monvel as well as photographers Cecil Beaton, Edward Steichen and HP Horst.

Her social circle included Presidents Roosevelt and Eisenhower, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Princess Grace of Monaco, Greta Garbo, Cristòbal Balienciaga, Hubert de Givenchy, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Paul Newman and Enrich Maria Remarque.

Mona’s quintessential style was celebrated in a song by Cole Porter and she was satirized as Kate McCloud in Truman Capote’s novel Unanswered Prayers.

Mona died in 1983, her will having established the Mona Bismarck American Center for Art & Culture in Paris.

Organizational Profile

The Mona Bismarck American Center for art & culture is a dynamic nonprofit organization. The Center enables the discovery of the richness and diversity of American art and culture through innovative exhibitions, educational and outreach programs and events. The Center is embarking on a transformation from a foundation to an active Center and initiating its first fundraising efforts.

History

The new Mona Bismarck American Center was launched in 2011, evolving from the legacy of the Mona Bismarck Foundation, established in 1986. A devotee of art and culture, Mona Bismarck enabled numerous charitable gifts during her life. She gave her Parisian townhouse and most of her estate to the Foundation with the purpose of fostering French-American friendship and understanding through art and culture. This remains the core mission of the Mona Bismarck American Center today.
