Overview Wadham is seeking an experienced Deputy Development Director with strategic flair to help advance the College’s ambitious plans for the next phase of Wadham’s development. Under the direction of the Director of Development, the Deputy Development Director will manage the Development Office, implement a wide-ranging alumni relations programme and take a leading role in securing major gifts.
The College Wadham College was founded in 1610 and occupies a large site in the centre of Oxford with beautiful gardens and buildings, created to support knowledge and learning at the highest levels. The alma mater of Christopher Wren, and the seventeenth century home of the polymaths who created the Royal Society, Wadham College has always been a place of intellectual vigour and great imagination. As a progressive and liberal College, Wadham takes pride in its longstanding tradition of welcoming outstanding students from all backgrounds. The College is one of the largest in the University of Oxford, with 60 Fellows, 450 undergraduates, 150 graduates, and 120 members of staff. The Warden, Lord Ken Macdonald QC, is one of the country’s most eminent criminal lawyers and former Director of Public Prosecution, has been in post since September 2012. The first phase of a £50m fundraising campaign was successfully completed in June 2012. Building on Wadham’s strengths in facilitating fair access at undergraduate and graduate levels, the College has some exciting plans for the next phase of its Campaign. The Deputy Development Director will help shape the strategy for a launch in 2014/2015.

Development Office The Development Director, Julie Hage, is a Fellow of Wadham and is responsible for alumni relations and fundraising for the College. The Development team includes of 6 full-time staff (including this role and the Director) and 1 part-time role. We are looking for an experienced fundraiser with excellent management skills and strategic flair. The ability to create relations within the College with the Warden, Bursars, Fellows and staff are critical to success. The post requires extensive face-to-face contact with alumni at events and in personal meetings; contact over the telephone and in correspondence by letter and email.

Tasks Fundraising •
Manage significant portfolio of current and prospective donors.
Implement
solicitation strategies; encourage prospective donors to consider making a gift to the College and, when appropriate, personally to solicit a specific sum of money (typically between £10,000 and £100,000); book meetings with prospects and ensure that contact reports are filed and followed up in a timely and appropriate manner; implement stewardship strategies for all donors in the portfolio •
Oversee the development of the Annual Fund strategy and offer strategic guidance
•
Develop and launch an innovative stewardship programme for donors at all levels
•
Oversee and develop the existing strategy for legacy fundraising
•
Develop a strategy for mid-level giving (£10-100K); manage relations with donors supporting particular focus areas
•
Optimise philanthropic support for the College and adhere to best practice in prospect cultivation, solicitation and stewardship; this will involve collaboration with UODO staff in line with agreed principles and protocols

Alumni Relations and Events •
Oversee the programme of alumni and fundraising events which is executed by the Events Officer with assistance from the Database Officer
•
Oversee the work of the Events Officer; this will involve weekly meetings to manage and prioritise their workload, set and review targets, and perform annual appraisals
•
Ensure that we provide a high standard of communication with our alumni which reinforce key messages about the College and the Campaign
•
Investigate an appropriate mix of print, web and email vehicles
•
Report on progress on a regular basis to the Development Director
Financial and Database Management •
Oversee the work of the Database Officer; this will involve weekly meetings to manage and prioritise their workload, set and review targets, and perform annual appraisals.

Ensure that donations are being processed in an efficient and accurate manner; ensure that monthly banking reconciliations are completed in a timely and accurate manner; monitor systems and procedures and implement any new initiatives to improve efficiency (eg Direct Debits)

Create and generate financial reports in order to provide useful analysis of fundraising

Liaise with UODO regarding the new database system (DARS) and plan Wadham’s integration to the new system (probably mid to late 2014)

These duties are a guide to the work that the post holder will initially be required to undertake. They may change from time to time to meet changing circumstances. This is a senior post and hours are commensurate with the role and the post holder will be expected to work such hours as are reasonably required to carry out their duties to the satisfaction of the Development Director. A notional 37.5 hours per week is used for the calculation of holidays and sick pay.

Person Specification Experience and knowledge •
A minimum of 5 years experience in a fundraising role with a focus on individual philanthropy (major gifts and/or annual giving);
a proven track record in securing

A good general level of education, including a degree or equivalent
