Candidate Information Pack { Development Director }

Letter from the Master

Thank you for your interest in Selwyn College. It's a year since I set out on the application process for the Mastership of this college. I'm glad I did. I was struck immediately by the warmth of the people of Selwyn, and by the combination of intellectual challenge with a strong community. Since I've been here, I've found it exhilarating getting to know the Fellows, alumni and students of the college. Whatever their age, background or subject they love what Selwyn means to them - and I want to foster that sense of belonging, along with continuing to aim high academically. We can only do that if we have a strong financial base. That's the only way to guarantee the best teaching and to make sure that we have the brightest students from all parts of Britain and beyond. The post of Development Director therefore matters hugely to the college, and he or she will be vital to our future success. I hope you get a chance to experience what a special place this is, and I wish you luck with your application.

Roger Mosey Master

Introduction Selwyn is an exceptional college at a world-class university. It is renowned as a college which achieves academic success at the highest levels whilst also being welcoming, forward-thinking and inclusive. Selwyn is committed to fair access and works with schools and colleges with little or no tradition of sending students to Cambridge. It consistently exceeds the University average for undergraduate admissions from the state sector, while still maintaining the highest academic standards. The college’s development programme is outstanding. It has raised £28 million in the last 10 years and its Annual Fund has a participation rate of over 19 per cent, one of the best in Cambridge. The college has strong relationships with its alumni who include Hugh Laurie, Tom Hollander, John Sentamu, Robert Harris, David Thomson, David Li, Nigel Newton and Clive Anderson. As a Fellow of the college and a member of the senior management team, the Development Director plays a vital role in the college. The successful candidate will join an institution that is fully engaged with philanthropic fundraising. A key opportunity for the new Development Director will be to lead Selwyn’s £20 million Campaign.

The College

Selwyn College was founded in 1882 as a memorial to George Augustus Selwyn, the first Bishop of New Zealand. It was granted full collegiate status in 1957. The college’s relative youth has encouraged a distinctive ethos which is both traditional and forward-looking, and which underpins its harmonious and democratic style of governance. The college currently has some 370 undergraduates and over 200 postgraduate students drawn from universities worldwide. There are 55 Fellows in a wide range of disciplines, who constitute the senior membership of the Governing Body. The college is a registered charity, of which the Master and Fellows are the trustees. The college has an active alumni and development programme, with a strong participation rate of 19%. It has a highly successful track record in fundraising, having raised £28 million since 2003. This has enabled it to refurbish the Victorian buildings of Old Court and complete the first two phases of Ann’s Court. Cripps Court, built in the 1960s, is currently undergoing extension and refurbishment at a cost of £14 million. By the summer of 2014, virtually all the college’s estate will be newly built or recently renovated, allowing the college to house on a single site all its undergraduates and postgraduates. In addition to this investment in the estate, the college has also almost doubled its endowment to around £40 million in the last ten years.

The College continued Academically, Selwyn ranks amongst the top performing colleges in the university. It is committed to the principle of fair access and works actively to increase the number of students from schools and colleges with little or no tradition of sending students to Cambridge. The college consistently exceeds the university average for undergraduate admissions from the state sector, while still maintaining the highest academic standards. The two Admissions Tutors, aided by the Schools Liaison Officer and many of the Fellows, have been particularly active in the college’s link areas of Leeds and West Yorkshire, as well as in parts of Berkshire and Scotland, and these initiatives have made a demonstrable impact on the aspiration of sixth-formers in these areas. The college's educational priority is to maintain the provision of small-group undergraduate supervisions, by, for example, investing in tenured teaching Fellowships, and electing as Fellows post-doctoral researchers with an interest in teaching. Selwyn also places particular emphasis on the pastoral role of Tutors, Directors of Studies, the Chaplain, and the College Nurse. The college is proud of the achievements of its students in their extra-curricular activities such as sport, drama, and music (including our highly regarded Chapel Choir).

The Master Roger Mosey was appointed Master of Selwyn College in October last year. Roger joined from the BBC, where he was Editorial Director. During his time at the BBC, he was Editor of Today on BBC Radio 4; Controller of BBC Radio Five Live; as well as Head of BBC Television News and the BBC's Director of London 2012 Olympic Games coverage.

Future Priorities Despite the success in growing the endowment, it remains small by Cambridge standards, and the college now wishes to consolidate recent successes and launch a new fund-raising campaign in 2014 with the objective of securing its financial future by increasing the endowment by a further ÂŁ20 million. This will allow the college to maintain and develop the quality of its teaching and research, and attract and support the best students, irrespective of social or financial circumstances.

The Post The Development Director has overall responsibility for setting and delivering the college’s development programme, embracing fund-raising and alumni relations. The purpose of the programme is to build, maintain and enhance the relations between Selwyn, its members, wellwishers and other potential supporters, in support of the college’s long-term development goals. Reporting to the Master and the Development Committee on strategic issues and the Bursar on budgetary and management issues, the Development Director is responsible for developing and implementing the college’s development strategy, and for managing the work of the Development Office to achieve its strategic objectives and specific targets. The Development Director is responsible for cultivating and raising principal (£250,000+) gifts to the college through face-to-face solicitations, and for stewarding existing major donors through meetings and regular communication. The Development Director has overall responsibility for the college’s comprehensive alumni relations programme, ensuring that it continues to evolve to meet the needs of alumni and take account of best practice in peer institutions in the UK and USA. The Development Director has line management, mentoring and career development responsibility for the other members of the Development Office team. The role involves dealing with high-profile individuals and requires regular work outside normal office hours, including weekends, and regular travel outside Cambridge and overseas. As a member of the college’s senior management team, the Development Director is expected to lead by example, help foster team spirit within the office and across departments, suggest strategies for improvement, and contribute to the smooth and effective governance of the college.
