Candidate Information Pack Head of Development, University of Buckingham

Letter from the Vice-Chancellor

Dear Candidate I am delighted that you are interested in the University of Buckingham. e University of Buckingham is a vibrant, lively and supportive intellectual community with a diverse and international student body. Its motto is ‘flying on its own wings’ (Alis volans proprils.) I think this describes well the ethos here. It is the most exciting and progressive place. e University was launched by a group of libertarian academics, philanthropists and activitists as Britain’s first fully independent University. It is a not-for-profit and registered charity and exists free from government subsidy. Buckingham was inspired by the model of the independent liberal arts colleges of America (whose teaching is stellar) and the independent universities of America (which, people here believe, promote a greatest possible diversity of thought.) ere is much to be proud about. But fundraising is relatively new. As the University approaches its fortieth birthday, there is a determination to build a development office that is commensurate with the highest academic and teaching excellence. We are very grateful to a donor who has funded the Philanthropy Company to prepare the foundations. Now we turn our attention to recruiting and building a team. e role of Head of Development is new and will play a key role. We hope that this will offer an outstanding opportunity to build and establish a programme of development within a much-loved University with an excellent prospect list, with clear values and principles, with a great sense of ambition and with many friends and supporters. Buckingham is embarking on the next stage of an exciting journey and we hope that you will apply to come with us. e strength and clarity of the founding principles of the University attracts a strong response from friends, supporters and donors. I wish you the very best of luck. ank you for considering joining the University of Buckingham.

Professor Alistair Alcock – Vice-Chancellor

Background Information Examples of Buckingham’s pioneering spirit may be seen everywhere throughout its short history. First to introduce intensive two year undergraduate degree courses, with teaching ratios and a tutorial system modelled on Oxbridge. First to charge fees for both home and overseas students. is model has been copied by many other Universities, but few have retained the freedom and ability to focus on providing an exceptional student experience. Forty years ago Buckingham set out to target international students and to become a global university. Today this is reflected in the culture and curriculum and in the internationalism and diversity of its research, staff, student and alumni bodies. Buckingham has over 2,000 students and it remains at the top of the National Student Survey. As Brian Kingham, Chair of the Campaign for Medicine Development Board, and longstanding donor and supporter, has remarked: ‘Innovation, change, better ways of doing things, lower cost; new services emerge when alternatives are made available. It is in individuals and small groups of visionaries that revolutionary change oen resides. Buckingham is just such a place; animated by the ardent desire to succeed.’ e University produces significant research. Its four schools, which occupy an attractive campus in the market town of Buckingham, are about to be joined by a Medical School, run in association with the Milton Keynes Hospital NHS Trust. e University now wishes to build on this background of support to create a development programme for the longer term to secure philanthropic funds for capital projects, student support and academic posts. e first major project in the development programme is a £30m campaign - ‘A Campaign for Medicine’ - to support the opening of the UK’s first independently-funded undergraduate medical school. British healthcare has led the world. e Buckingham School of Medicine builds on a great tradition and rigorous academic standards. ere may be thirty-two medical schools already in Britain. But there is only one independent medical school. Just over £2m has been secured towards the new medical school.
