Candidate Information Pack Development Director, University of London
Letter from the Vice-Chancellor
Dear Candidate, Thank you for your interest in the University of London and the new senior post of Director of Development. This is a very exciting time for us as we embark on a major programme of change. The academic excellence of our federal Colleges and Institutes across London has made us one of the world’s most respected and well-established universities. What is perhaps less well known is the excellence of the academic bodies based here at Senate House, including ten postgraduate research institutes dedicated to the humanities, libraries that are among the finest of their kind, and an International Programme offering University of London degrees to 54,000 students in 180 countries around the world. We want to invest in all of this, and our strategy for success is one of innovation and growth. Our footprint is huge, and the UoL estate in London covers the equivalent of 44 football pitches. At its geographical heart is Senate House in Bloomsbury, a landmark of learning for hundreds of thousands of students, scholars and the merely curious since its construction in 1936, home to the Ministry of Information in the Second World War and the inspiration for Orwell, Waugh, and many other authors. Since I arrived two years ago I have built a senior team of dedicated people who are rethinking every aspect of our operation. As part of that investment we are now ready to launch our own fundraising and development operation that will play a major role in realising our ambition. The successful candidate will work with me and senior colleagues to attract the philanthropic support that we believe we can achieve. It is a tremendous challenge and one that I hope you find as exciting as I do. Professor Sir Adrian Smith Vice-Chancellor

The University of London - Introduction
This is a rare opportunity to join one of the world’s foremost universities to lead its philanthropic fundraising. Working for one of the most universally recognised brands in the world, the Development Director will develop and deliver the University of London’s significant fundraising potential. The University of London was founded in 1836 and is recognised globally with a reputation built up over many years through its history and the strength of the individual Colleges. It is one of the oldest, largest and most diverse universities in the UK, and is a federation of 18 separately incorporated, selfgoverning, directly-funded Colleges together with a range of central academic activities. The University of London attracts students and academics of the very highest calibre, and is the second largest university by number of full-time students in the United Kingdom, with around 120,000 campus-based students and over 54,000 students studying by distance and flexible learning, in 180 countries, with the University of London International Programmes. No fewer than sixty former students and current or former staff have been awarded Nobel prizes. It is committed to achieving the highest standards in teaching combined with groundbreaking research. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 10 of the nation’s top 35 multisubject institutions, and 7 of the top 12 single subject institutions, were Colleges of the University, a remarkable achievement by any measure. In many ways, the Colleges are universities in their own right; they are separate legal entities; they set their own entrance criteria for their courses and they offer their own services to students. Some now also have their own degree awarding powers. All students from all the Colleges and Institutes are also University of London students, making them part of a significant community of past and present students.

The University of London - Introduction continued
Since his arrival in 2012, Professor Sir Adrian Smith, the University of London’s ViceChancellor, has overseen many exciting initiatives and the University of London is looking to build on this new narrative which will involve new academic initiatives and capital development plans. The Development Director will establish a fundraising department within the central University, a separate legal body from the Colleges of the University, many of which have existing fundraising offices of their own.

Development at the University of London
The University of London has a long history of philanthropic giving but has not actively fundraised for a number of years. The University now seeks to make a step-change in income in line with its ambitious aims and objectives. The Development Director will work very closely with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Adrian Smith, and the incoming Chair of Trustees, Sir Richard Dearlove (present Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge). However, as both of these are part-time positions the Director will report to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Operations), Chris Cobb, on a day to day basis. The postholder will establish and lead a new Development office for the central University and will be responsible for developing and implementing a fundraising strategy that ensures the University of London continues to lead and innovate.
The University already receives
unsolicited gifts (mainly bequests) and initial research with the More Partnership has revealed a significant affiliate wealth pool. A key priority will be establishing and implementing a Campaign for a variety of exciting and high-profile initiatives. Working collaboratively and confidently with the Senior Leadership of the University, the Development Director will bring a forward-thinking and innovative approach to developing new, and building on existing, high-value relationships to deliver philanthropic income; identify and develop new prospects; build and maintain relationships with existing donors; and work with external volunteers, academics and staff within the University. The postholder will need to have an entrepreneurial and collaborative approach to work to ensure that the University’s potential is realised. This is a unique chance to join a leading University and an outstanding opportunity for a motivated, entrepreneurial individual with a track record of success. Success in the role will be career defining and an opportunity to work at the very highest levels.
