Candidate Information Pack { Director of Major Gifts, Worldwide Cancer Research }
Letter from the Chief Executive Dear Candidate, Thank you for your interest in Worldwide Cancer Research and the new senior post of Director of Major Gifts. We are the leading charity funding research into any type of cancer, anywhere in the world. We believe global research is the only thing that can help us get to grips with cancer, and this year we will award £9.5 million to cutting edge research projects. These projects that sow the seed for future developments in the way we prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. Projects that will hopefully one day save millions of lives. We are extremely proud of our unique position within the field of cancer research funding. No one else does what we do and our role is vital. We are also proud of our reputation for doing things differently. Mirroring our single-minded approach to cancer research is our simplicity of organisational model. My background in fundraising, coupled with an innovative and responsive Board of Trustees, has meant we have delivered an organisation that punches way above its weight. We are but a few, but our reach and our impact is great. However we are simply not funding the level of research we need and our two core revenue streams, whilst once the vanguard of fundraising, are beginning to run their course. Over the last couple of years, together with the Board of Trustees, I have been implementing fundamental organisational change to ensure we have the talent and ability to meet our future funding ambitions. These changes have included a complete name change and re-brand and the appointment of my strategic management team - people with the right expertise to lead their respective departments and bring fresh new thinking to the charity. We are now looking to add to this team with the crucial appointment of a Director of Major Gifts. This is an exciting time for the charity and this key strategic role will help deliver new revenue streams, introduce the charity to new audiences and help us reach our vision of no life cut short by cancer. Yours sincerely, Norman Barrett Chief Executive Worldwide Wide Cancer Research

Worldwide Cancer Research Worldwide Cancer Research (formerly AICR) was established in 1979. We believe that only the freedom to fund the most innovative and challenging research, no matter where in the world it occurs will help us to reduce incidences of cancer and improve survival for everyone. This philosophy has helped us fund some of the most diverse and unexpected projects in the world’s best research institutions, and contribute to some significant breakthroughs. As a result 35 years on, we are a strong and trusted brand within the scientific community. Each year we award over £9 million in vital funds to support early-stage cancer research projects. This means we have scientists fighting cancer somewhere in the world 24/7. That’s an average of over 1,200 hours of cancer research happening each and every day. Our type of pioneering, early-stage research provides that vital seed of discovery needed to drive forward new and better ways of preventing, diagnosing, and treating cancer. It’s a vital part of the journey and without it we would not have the immense advancements in survival that we see today. So far we have invested over £182 million in almost 1,700 research projects across 34 different countries. Our research has helped scientists find new ways to knock down prostate cancer, improve the diagnosis of rare childhood cancers, and has contributed to some of the latest understanding into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of many different cancers. This research has the potential to help millions of people survive cancer. But whilst our Scientific Advisory Committee is giving the green light to approximately 50 projects every year, we are painfully aware that we need to fund more research. On average, for every project we fund, there is another exciting and potentially life-changing project that we turn down - simply because we do not have enough money. Yet there has never been a more exciting time within the field of cancer research. Technology has advanced our understanding of cancer biology. Our ability to sequence the human genome faster and cheaper than ever before means we can develop a platform on which to better understand the nuts and bolts of cancer and we are already seeing the idea of cancer treatments reborn, with new concepts like personalised medicine, targeted drugs and therapies that harness the power of the immune system. Now more than ever we need to keep funding the research.

A Strategy for Growth Worldwide Cancer Research was established by a group of research scientists, led by the Chairman Dr. Colin Thomson, a maverick in his field of cancer research who used his creative and innovative thinking to lay the foundations for a cancer research charity like no other. Those pioneering values and resilience still hold true today. The charity’s early approach to developing a fundraising model was also unique at the time harnessing the latest DM techniques to build a sweeps programme that was, and still is, a gold standard within the category. The charity was also one of the first in the field of regular giving and has been focused on building a solid regular giving donor base of over 60,000 supporters most recently through its Home Money Box programme. Worldwide Cancer Research has used agencies to manage and deliver 80% of its income through these two programmes. The benefit has been a fluid and agile fundraising programme that has brought innovation and the latest thinking with these revenue streams. However, the world is changing.
The way we live our lives, the technology that helps us
communicate and changing trends in charitable giving mean that the charity’s two revenue streams are starting to see wear out and have a finite life span. The current Strategic Management Team and the CEO have been tasked by the Board of Trustees to once again look to pioneering and innovative approaches to deliver new audiences and increased revenue streams. Significant investment is being made in online and social media and student-focused programmes are taking the cause to a younger audience. More relevant and brand building direct marketing techniques are also currently being tested against new audiences. Whilst the above changes will ensure we maintain current income levels, ambitious financial targets that take our research spend from £9 million a year to £25 million a year will require a more radical approach and a significant investment. There is also therefore the requirement to build internal expertise and new partnerships. The formation of the Appeals Development Board and the appointment of the Director of Major Gifts is the foundation for reaching new audiences and delivering the uplift in required revenue.
