Director of Development St Catherine’s British School Candidate Information Pack

in partnership with

Letter from the Headmaster Thank you for your interest in the role of Development Director at St. Catherine’s British School. I joined St. Catherine’s in the summer of 2013 after over thirty years in the UK maintained sector and I have to say it has been an excellent decision on both the professional and personal fronts. The school is indubitably an outstanding school with high achieving and happy pupils and staff – the school motto of “Excellence and Happiness” is genuinely an accurate reflection of life in the school for the whole community. On a personal level Greece is a wonderful country in which to live – the climate, the culture, the cuisine, and the camaraderie all combine to make it an ideal place for adults and children alike. The sense of commitment to the development of the school is also reflected by our highly supportive Board of Governors – they are determined to provide St. Catherine’s with a fabulous new school learning environment over the next few years. We see this new post of Development Director as highly important to helping us not only realise this vision but making it even more progressive for our whole school community. We look forward to meeting you and discussing how you would be able to realise fully this exciting vision. Stuart Smith Headmaster

Introduction St. Catherine’s British School was originally established in 1956 in the grounds of the British Embassy in Athens. Although originally intended to provide education for children from Britain and the Commonwealth, it now teaches over 1100 pupils from 54 nationalities. Its internationally acclaimed reputation is gained by achieving high academic standards within a challenging curriculum. St Catherine’s was highly praised in its recent 2016 Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report and achieved the top excellent rating in all areas. To read the report, please go to the school website. St Catherine’s is currently situated within its own grounds in northern Athens, near the elegant suburb of Kifissia. In addition to its current grounds, the school has also recently acquired a large adjacent plot on which it plans to develop a new school fit for the 21st century. The school currently has good teaching, sporting and recreational facilities, including a large open-air swimming pool and two libraries. St. Catherine’s is proud to be a British International School but also takes every opportunity to benefit from the rich heritage of Greece and every class looks at

The school has a good balance of long term local and expatriate pupils from all over the world. Due to its academic excellence, St. Catherine’s is the first choice school for most local and expatriate families, who want their children to gain a British education within an international context. The parents of St. Catherine’s come from a variety of diplomatic, governmental, corporate and other professional backgrounds. St Catherine’s endeavours to foster a love of learning through a well taught, appropriately challenging, clearly defined, broad and balanced curriculum. The aim is to fully develop pupils’ intellectual, social, physical and creative potential, in anticipation that they will develop into sensitive, informed, decisive and capable global citizens of

supported by educational visits.

Character building and interpersonal skills are developed through a range of relevant educational experiences and extra-curricular activities. As a leading exponent of global citizenship, St. Catherine’s pupils are encouraged to develop problem-solving skills, conflict resolution skills, negotiation strategies and an understanding of multicultural, multi-faith, and multi-racial concepts within the context of cultural pluralism. Pupils are expected to seek solutions to environmental and ecological problems and actively demonstrate responsibilities and sound practices for good global, European and national citizenship, as well as having clear expectations of the relevance and benefits of personal, social and health strategies.

Introduction The school follows a curriculum that is closely based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales between the ages of 5 and 16 years, with all students being taught in English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Physical Education and one of four Modern Languages. In addition, there are a range of creative and humanities subjects. For the final two years all students can study for the full IB Diploma. St. Catherine’s pupils have gone on to study at top universities all over the world including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Bristol, UCL, Imperial, LSE, Yale, UCLA, NYU amongst others. Despite the economic climate in Greece, St. Catherine’s continues to attract a high level of interest from potential families. Student numbers have been maintained and many applicants unfortunately have to be rejected due to a lack of space. Plans to develop a new school are at an advanced stage and the successful candidate will be actively involved in the realization of a superb new school fit for the community it serves. The current Headmaster, Stuart Smith, joined St. Catherine’s from the UK in August 2013 and is committed to seeing the realization of the exciting school vision within the next four to five years.

The Development Director will work closely with the Headmaster and the Executive Leadership Team comprising of the Deputy Head, Dr. Stuart Bond, the Head of Lower School, Mrs. Madeleine Matthews, and the School Business Manager, Mr. Dino Theodosiou. They will also work closely with the Community Development Co-ordinator, Mrs. Deborah Eleftheriou, who has moved the Alumni Association into an integral position within the school community. The Board of Governors and the Headmaster are extremely supportive of the need to grow the development function to support the school’s future expansion and fundraising activities. As such, the School is looking for a talented and ambitious individual to take up the role of Development Director and make a real impact on its future. This is an exciting opportunity and will appeal especially to those who are seeking to further their career in an international context. The backdrop to this opportunity will be the chance to live in a beautiful country with an enviable climate, wonderful people, delicious cuisine and ancient architecture, cushioned by the supportive network of this flourishing British international school.
