Introduction

UCL is one of the world’s most powerful, influential and impactful universities. The quality of its teaching, the impact of its research, and its engaged, responsive, and international outlook mean it is consistently ranked among the world’s very best higher education institutions. Whether you know it or not, UCL research will have improved your life, the lives of people you know, and the lives of people they know, in London, the UK and around the world. UCL is driven to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges and transform the lives of citizens across the globe. Its excellence extends to all academic disciplines and UCL’s former academics and graduates include 29 Nobel Prize winners, with world-changing breakthroughs in every decade of the last century. These include the discovery or development of new chemical elements, DNA, organ transplants, wireless communications, and much more. In 2014, its reputation for remarkable research was recognised when UCL was rated the UK’s top university for research strength. In 1826, UCL’s founders redefined the very idea of a university. It opened up education in England for the first time to students of any race, gender or religion and was the first to make higher education affordable for all. Today, it is London’s Global University that is home to more than 36,000 students studying more than 200 undergraduate or 400 postgraduate degrees.

UCL’s founding principles of innovation, accessibility and relevance to wider society inform its ethos today and are embedded in its new 20 year strategy, UCL2034. It is proud to be recognised for its radical and critical thinking and its outstanding ability to integrate education, research, innovation and enterprise for the benefit of all. UCL is a diverse community with more than 50 academic departments, from astronomy to zoology. Both of these departments, and many more inbetween, were established at UCL by philanthropic donations. For nearly two centuries, philanthropy has enabled UCL’s journey from a radical, struggling newcomer on the fringes of London to one of the world’s most respected institutions. This philanthropy has always been a partnership. People give to UCL because they recognise its capacity to be a positive agent for social, cultural, medical, material, intellectual and policy change. It is thanks to the vision and generosity of our philanthropic partners that UCL has such an enviable history, such a strong present, and such a promising future.

Introduction

What does the future hold for UCL? In 2014, UCL’s new President and Provost, Professor Michael Arthur, introduced a 20 year strategy for UCL, UCL2034. Its vision for the next 20 years is that its distinctive approach to research, education and innovation will further inspire its community of staff, students and partners to transform how the world is understood, how knowledge is created and shared and the way that global problems are solved.

Its bold and ambitious strategy is centred on six Principal Themes, each with an implementation plan: •

Academic leadership grounded in intellectual excellence.

A global leader in the integration of research and education, underpinning an inspirational student experience.

Addressing global challenges through its disciplinary excellence and distinctive crossdisciplinary approach.

An accessible, publicly-engaged organisation that fosters a lifelong community.

London’s Global University: in London, of London and for London.

Delivering global impact through a network of innovative international activities, collaborations and partnerships.

The Development and Alumni Relations Office

“Building relationships to make remarkable things happen at UCL” There has never been a more exciting time to join UCL’s Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO). It is currently in the momentum-building phase for a major new fundraising and supporter engagement campaign, expected to launch publicly in 2016. This will be a new type of campaign; it will be more international in its outlook and will extend UCL’s reach beyond the traditional pool of alumni as prospective donors. It will have a strong partnership element with other institutions and with partner hospital charities, and will change the way the University identifies and engages with all of its supporters. This Campaign will have a transformative effect on the whole of UCL. By the time it concludes, UCL will be raising more money than ever before in support of its most significant priorities, providing the platform to take the University to its 200th anniversary in 2026.

The Campaign will span the breadth of UCL’s areas of strength and expertise, with an increased focus on fundraising to support the student experience and health and medical research. It will positively impact on its estate, research, staff, students, and the local, national, and international community. Today, the team comprises more than 60 members of staff working across Alumni Relations, Supporter Communications, Regular Giving, Fundraising and Insight. In order to deliver a campaign of this scale, the team is expanding and building a multi-talented group of individuals who have the potential to deliver new and innovative approaches and the ambition to push the boundaries of what is possible.
