Letter from Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell Dear Candidate, Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Manchester. Statistics and Structure Research and Innovation

Campus Investment

The campus is the largest estate in UK higher education, with 245 buildings across 270 hectares including 24 listed buildings.

Many of the University’s completed projects – such as the Whitworth, the Manchester Cancer Research Centre and the National Graphene Institute – have received or been shortlisted for major awards.

At the size of 11 football pitches, the flagship £350m Manchester Engineering Campus Development will be one of the single largest construction projects undertaken by any higher education institution in the UK.

The £175 million Fallowfield Student Village project will create 3,000 modern, high-quality student accommodation units and an exciting student hub.

The University of Manchester is positioned as one of the UK’s top research universities, which was confirmed in the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, where 83% of their research activity was judged to be ‘world-leading’ (4*) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3*). The University’s research beacons are examples of pioneering discoveries, interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-sector partnerships that are tackling some of the biggest questions facing the planet. The Division of Development and Alumni Relations

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations seeks to connect with alumni and other individuals and organisations, building sustained and growing sources of private gift income and other forms of tangible support for the goals of the University. The Division aims to provide an outstandingly communicative, engaging, stimulating and rewarding experience to donors and alumni who wish to play a partnership role in taking areas of shared interest forward. The University benefits from the interest and support of the UK’s largest alumni community for a campus-based university, maintaining contact with more than 290,000 of its alumni in over 200 countries. Annual Philanthropic gift income has grown from £2M in 2004/5 to over £18M in 2014/15. The current Business Plan for the Division, linked to consistent, strategic investment by the University, targets on an-going increase of 15% per annum to reach a sustainable target of over £35M in gift income per annum by 2020/21. This income includes grants made to the University by the independent organisations the North American foundation for the University of Manchester (NAFUM) and the Hong Kong Foundation for the University of Manchester.

Beyond philanthropy, in the past two years the Division has worked with over 3,500 alumni volunteers who are engaged in programmes that bring current students and alumni together, in order to enhance the student experience and take the University’s commitment to Social Responsibility to new levels. These awardwinning and nominated programmes include the Manchester Gold mentoring programme, ‘meet the professionals’ careers events, School Governors programmes, work placements and an international Global Graduates Scheme that provides students from low income backgrounds with the opportunity to visit major global cities (including New York City, Hong Kong and Dubai) to meet with alumni across a variety of sectors, providing a global perspective on their future career. Job Description The Role The role takes lead responsibility for interactions with the UK’s largest alumni community of over 300,000 alumni in over 190 countries. This is around twice the size of the average alumni population across the ‘Russell Group’ of research-intensive UK universities. Job Purpose To facilitate sustained high level philanthropic income and to deliver tangible alumni engagement and support for the University’s strategic objectives.

Budget: £4M for 2015/16, with provisionally agreed increases for future years. Financial gift income (Ross/CASE survey): £21M in 2014/5, currently targeting growth of 15% per annum through to 2019/20. Other Dimensions: Manage current division staff team of 63 FTE (with further positions provisionally agreed through to 2019/20).

Principal Accountabilities 1. To develop and manage relationships with prioritised UK and international philanthropists and alumni, charitable trusts and other organisations, managing their direct engagement in discussions with the President and Vice-Presidential team, soliciting their support to meet agreed annual financial targets for gift income for prioritised programmes and projects.

6. To devise, develop and manage policies relating to campus-wide fundraising practice (including co-ordination of approaches to donors, donor recognition and stewardship, and gift acceptance/ donor due diligence procedures across the institution) to maximise gift income while safeguarding the reputation of the University and its donor communities.

2. To maximise financial leverage connected to philanthropy for the benefit of the University from other public and private funding sources, through effective internal planning and communication.

7. To lead on partnership negotiations with other charitable bodies (including but not limited to medical and NHS-related charities), identifying and exploiting opportunities for successful joint fundraising initiatives on major projects and on shared strategic priorities.

3. To increase, on an annual basis, both the absolute number of alumni donors and the proportion of the contactable alumni database making donations, in order to fund agreed strategic priorities across campus and to build the pipeline of higher level lifetime and legacy alumni donors. 4. To develop and manage relationships with top level UK and international donor volunteers, including members of the University’s Global Leadership Board, enlisting their support in communicating with and approaching other donors, and involving them in strategic discussions with the University’s President and leadership team. 5. To be the principal point of liaison with international University of Manchester-related charitable Foundation Boards (currently in the USA and Hong Kong), working with Board Chairs and members of these independent organisations to spread best practice in philanthropic fundraising for the benefit of the University.

8. To facilitate engagement of senior alumni ‘influencers’ in priority public and private sector roles with the President and the University’s leadership team, seeking their external advice, market intelligence insights, lobbying/influencing and ’door opening’ support for the benefit of the University in furthering its goals. 9. To recruit, train, lead and manage a team of fundraisers and alumni relations professionals to meet strategic priorities and spread best practice in philanthropy and alumni relations across campus, including the four faculties and Manchester Business school.

To plan and deliver an alumni printed, on-line and event communications strategy to ensure the UK’s largest alumni body remains up to date with campus initiatives and developments, while also facilitating networking, career development and lifelong learning opportunities for alumni, thereby increasing alumni inclination to support the University financially and in other ways.

13. To stay abreast of, and help develop, best practice in University fundraising and alumni relations across the UK and global higher education sectors, building effective relationships with colleagues at peer UK and international universities and global training bodies, to ensure that the University’s own programmes remain at or close to international best practice.

11. To plan and execute a highly active campuswide alumni programme, delivering tangible and quantifiable benefits for faculties, schools, research institutes, the cultural assets, Professional Support Service and other units in support of both University-wide and unit-focused objectives, including but not limited to student recruitment, graduate employability, professional networking and marketing programmes.

14. To be an active member of the Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer’s Senior Leadership Team and to undertake wider University duties as may be requested from time to time. 15. To oversee the development of comprehensive training and communication programmes for DDAR staff and academic leaders for philanthropy across campus.

To undertake full management responsibility for the Division in terms of adherence to all University-wide policies, including health and safety, risk management, human resources, financial procedures (including Divisional budget setting and monitoring) and equality and diversity, and to take lead responsibility for Data Protection and Equality Act legal requirements associated with the security and management of the University’s alumni database and the processing of alumni data across campus.

Person Specification

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed •

Significant experience in fundraising best practice with private philanthropists and other donors.

Highly developed negotiation skills for agreeing priority projects and strategies for fundraising with campus and volunteer leaders.

Highly developed negotiation and diplomatic skills with top-level potential donors, identifying and taking forward avenues for high level support with the maturity and gravitas to represent the University with credibility and authority at the highest levels. The ability to draw on deep knowledge of activities and priorities across the institution, and to communicate these selectively and persuasively to key external stakeholders.

Knowledge of different types of gift structures for gifts at all levels and over differing time periods, including gifts for immediate use, expendable (multi-year) endowments, and permanent (in perpetuity) endowments.

Detailed knowledge of tax-efficient vehicles, charity law and gift accounting procedures and practices in the UK, the USA and internationally.

Significant experience of data management, with associated detailed knowledge of UK and international data protection and sensitive data policies and legislation.

Significant experience of data analysis to identify trends in donor behaviour and giving patterns, to inform improved communication and solicitation strategies.

Significant experience and knowledge of guidelines, best practice and policies in respect of ethical considerations relating to the acceptance of gifts and donor due diligence.

Experience of leadership in institution-wide marketing, communications and/or public relations programmes and initiatives involving multiple internal and external stakeholders.

President and Vice-Chancellor and the P&VC’s Office – agreeing communication and solicitation strategies with top level donors and alumni influencers, and agreeing University-wide fundraising priorities.

Deputy President & all Vice-Presidents (Faculty Deans and Policy VPs), and Director of Manchester Business School – advising on philanthropic strategy at Faculty level, agreeing priorities and ensuring receiving sufficient support from DDAR team in furthering their philanthropic and alumni goals.
