A New Strategy
The University is embarking upon a new 2015-2025 strategy which aims to propel UNSW into the world’s top 50 universities on all key rankings by 2025. A key part of developing our new strategy has been a wide-ranging consultation, involving thousands of our staff , students, alumni and external partners and the development of Green and White Papers. The consultation identified a strategy based on three strategic priority areas. Firstly, a drive for academic excellence in research and education. Universities are often classified as ‘research intensive’ or ‘teaching intensive’. UNSW is proud to be an exemplar of both. We are amongst a limited group of universities worldwide capable of delivering research excellence alongside the highest quality education on a large scale.
Our ambition for the next decade is nothing less than to establish UNSW as Australia’s global university. We aspire to this in the belief that a great university, which is a global leader in discovery, innovation, impact, education and thought leadership, can make an enormous difference to the lives of people in Australia and around the world. Philanthropy is critical to the University’s future plans and will be a vital enabler of UNSW’s efforts to maximise its economic and social contribution and address global challenges through excellence in research and education. UNSW aims to significantly elevate its fundraising eff orts over the next few years through the launch of its first ever comprehensive fundraising campaign.
Secondly, a passion for social engagement, which improves lives through advancing equality, diversity, open debate and economic progress. Thirdly, a commitment to achieving global impact through sharing our capability in research and education in the highest quality partnerships with institutions in both developed and emerging societies. We regard the interplay of academic excellence, social engagement and global impact as the hallmarks of a great forward-looking 21st century university.

A Campus That Never Stands Still
UNSW is undertaking one of the most ambitious campus transformations of any Australian university. Our vision is to create a vibrant, innovative environment to maximize learning and research opportunities for both staff and students.
Planning is underway for further developments in the near future, including the soon-to-be redeveloped Biological Sciences building and refurbishments to the Electrical and Civil Engineering and Roundhouse buildings.
More than A$1.2 billion has been invested in the last four years in building renewals, student accommodation upgrades, new specialist precincts and student facilities. Additionally, the number and quality of retail offerings has increased dramatically, providing students and staff with a greater range of food, entertainment, banking, shopping and service outlets.
Philanthropy, through the launch of UNSW’s first ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, will play an increasingly vital role in supporting UNSW’s ambitious capital development program over the next five to ten years.
Philanthropy has played a key role in supporting UNSW’s capital development program with major gifts secured in support of the Lowy Cancer Research Centre, the Tyree Energy Technology Building, Balnaves Place - Home of Nura Gili, the Wallace Wurth Building housing the Kirby Institute, the Ainsworth Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering building and the Materials Science and Engineering Building housing the Michael Crouch Innovation Centre.
