Letter from Nick Blinco Dear future colleague, My name is Nick Blinco and I lead Advancement at the University of Melbourne. I’m delighted to have this opportunity to highlight to you the benefits of joining our team. Why Melbourne? The University of Melbourne is Australia’s leading research institution and the university of choice for the most talented students and researchers in the nation and throughout the Asia-Pacific. Ranked in the top 35 globally, number one in Australia and number two in Asia; it is a research and learning powerhouse that influences thinking across the world. Our mission and work ethic is strong and it shows in our every interaction. Our founders chose the motto postera crescum laude, ’I will grow in the esteem of future generations’ to represent Melbourne. And over 163 years later, we strive to continue their faith in the institution, aiming - through all our actions - to become one of the finest universities in the world. Our vision is that of a university known for its service to the nation, renowned for teaching and learning programs that transform the most talented students into thoughtful and accomplished graduates and unrivalled for research excellence and impact. In my first six months here, I have witnessed this first hand; it’s incredibly exciting! As the primary transnational university in Asia, Melbourne is perfectly placed to build Australia’s global economic value in the post-mining era and Advancement is key to this success. Indeed, it is a thrilling time for Advancement. In 2013, the University set one of the largest ever philanthropic targets for a higher education institution in Australia. The response to Believe – the Campaign for the University of Melbourne has far exceeded our expectations and we are set to achieve our target of $500 million far in advance of our scheduled end date of December 2017. On this foundation we will - with a committed University and volunteer leadership, a range of outstanding projects and a fabulous team of Advancement professionals - build something extraordinary. The University leadership and the academy have a profound understanding of and commitment to Advancement. They have borne witness to the extraordinary impact of the financial generosity of donors and the time and commitment of alumni and friend volunteers. At Melbourne, you have the opportunity to do your very best, at one of the world’s great universities, in a truly beautiful part of the world. The city of Melbourne is consistently voted the world’s most liveable and it’s easy to see why. Its vibrancy is evident in the number of cafes, restaurants and bars, and in the array of sporting and cultural events it hosts. Add to that a warm embrace that transcends cultures, a society that praises creativity, encourages risk taking and promotes a healthy balance between work and living life, and you have a powerful package. It is fabulously family friendly and the quality of life is superb. The University of Melbourne is ambitious, innovative, well established and widely regarded across Australia as a leader. We are seeking candidates of the same calibre. I look forward to meeting you. With best wishes,

Nick Blinco Vice-Principal (Advancement) Candidate Information Pack Senior Development Manager, The University of Melbourne

Introduction The University’s global aspirations seek to make significant contributions to overcoming major social, economic and environmental challenges. Accordingly, the University’s research strategy Research at Melbourne: Ensuring Excellence and Impact to 2025 aspires to a significant advancement in the excellence and impact of its research outputs. More information is available at http://www.unimelb.edu.au/research/ research-strategy.html

The strategy recognises that as a public-spirited, research-intensive institution of the future, the University must strive to make a tangible impact in Australia and the world, working across disciplinary and sectoral boundaries and building deeper and more substantive engagement with industry, collaborators and partners. While cultivating the fundamental enabling disciplines through investigator-driven research, the University has adopted three Grand Challenges aspiring to solve some of the most difficult problems facing our world in the next century. These Grand Challenges include: •

“Understanding our place and purpose” centres on understanding all aspects of national identity, with a focus on Australia’s ‘place’ in the Asia-Pacific region and the world, and the mission to improve all dimensions of the human condition through their research.

“Fostering health and wellbeing” focuses on building the scale and breadth of capabilities in population and global health; on harnessing their contribution to the ‘convergence revolution’ of biomedical and health research, bringing together the life sciences, engineering and the physical sciences; and on addressing the physical, mental and social aspects of wellbeing by looking beyond the traditional boundaries of biomedicine.

“Supporting sustainability and resilience” addresses the critical issues of climate change, water and food security, sustainable energy and designing resilient cities and regions. In addition to the technical aspects, this Grand Challenge considers the physical and social functioning of cities, connecting physical phenomena with lessons from our past, and the implications of the technical solutions for economies, living patterns and behaviours.

Essential to tackling these challenges is an outstanding faculty, high performing students, and wide collaboration including internationally and through deep partnerships with external parties.
