The College

King’s College is one of the most illustrious Cambridge Colleges and certainly the most iconic. Founded by Henry VI in 1441 for the support of `Poor Scholar Clerkes…engaged in Study’, to promote Religion, Education, Learning and Research, it has become distinguished in all these areas and more besides. This is no ordinary College; its Chapel and world famous choir, together with its intellectual heritage, make it not just the best known Cambridge College worldwide, but one which now carries the identity of Cambridge city and University for many people across the world. It boasts a long list of famous Fellows and alumni, including Orlando Gibbons, Horace Walpole, Rupert Brooke, John Maynard Keynes, Roger Fry, Xu Zhimo, E.M.Forster, Alan Turing, Joan Robinson and Zadie Smith.

Today King’s is renowned for its intellectual excitement, open-mindedness and readiness to experiment. It enjoys particularly relaxed and informal relations between academics and students, and is notable for its commitment to the recruitment of students from nontraditional backgrounds. It is known for being a friendly, informal and diverse community and is committed to this diversity. Academic standards are high and the College aims to help all students to develop their academic ability and personal potential whatever their background. The College has 130 Fellows, 250 graduate students and 400 undergraduates, involved in all branches of University study. There are over 8000 alumni.

Development at King’s

King’s has an established Development Office whose principal purpose is to raise funds to make it possible to support new and imaginative projects and activities within the College, over and above the College’s core activities of support for students, maintenance of buildings and the provision of small group teaching and research activities, which are currently covered by the College’s income.

At present, the office consists of eight staff. The Director of Development will be expected to provide leadership to the office, and be responsible for setting and controlling its budget, in consultation with the First Bursar and the Finance Committee of the College.

With significant support from the Fellowship and under the leadership of the Provost, the College has embarked on what will be one of the most exciting College fundraising initiatives. A detailed case for support has been prepared and agreed, with an aspirational £100m of identified needs. This total is now being tested with major prospects during the quiet phase, with the intention of launching a public campaign in 2017 or 2018. The College’s campaign, while raising funds for College purposes, is also operating within the context of the recently launched £2bn Cambridge University Campaign, and there are structures in place to facilitate collaboration with the University’s Development Office.

Role of the Director of Development

The Director of Development will be responsible for the creation of a comprehensive Campaign strategy and will have a particular focus on building relationships that facilitate major gifts from known prospects. Because of the unique standing of the College, these will not only be alumni but also non-alumni together with external bodies and charities. The postholder will be responsible for the reconstruction of the existing Development Board to make best use of alumni volunteers and will also oversee the strategy for the Alumni Relations role of the office, with initiatives to enhance the College’s Annual Fund for regular donations and to build up the number of legacy pledges.

The Director of Development will be an Officer of the College, reporting to the Provost, consulting with the First Bursar on financial matters and working with the Fellowship. He or she will be elected to a Fellowship of the College with its associated rights and privileges. The Director is a member of the College’s Development Committee, which meets on a termly basis and has general oversight of Development activities, and will also report annually to the College’s Governing Body and termly to the College Council on strategy and on donations received. He or she will also serve ex officio on other College Committees. We expect the postholder to have a transformational impact on the College’s fundraising and in so doing, to play a pivotal role in enabling King’s to effect a step change in its capability to attract philanthropic funding and engage powerfully with its alumni and non-alumni stakeholders globally. The postholder will need to operate flexibly, with initiative and confidence. The successful candidate will be an exceptional major gifts fundraiser who recognises that success in this role will be transformational not only for the College but also for their own career.
