Director of Development & Alumni Relations Sa誰d Business School, Oxford University

Letter from Professor Peter Tufano, Dean, Saïd Business School, Oxford University Dear Candidate, Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Development and Alumni Relations at Saïd Business School, Oxford University. This is a critical role for us, and I am personally committed to this search and to working closely with the selected candidate who will play a key role in developing the future of our School. This search comes at an inflection point for Oxford Saïd. We have a very clearly defined approach, and are proud to be a world-class business school community, embedded in a world-class University, tackling world-scale problems. Others might claim something of the same, but what really sets us apart from other business schools is the degree to which we are fully engaged with – and within - the collegiate University at Oxford, leveraging its amazing array of resources, academic talent, facilities and capabilities. We also differ from other schools on account of our joint commitments to providing a first-class business education and driving large-scale societal change through business, with our priority being to prepare our students for successful leadership roles in their chosen fields. We have made great progress against our ambitions, and many of our programmes are already highly ranked in the global business school league tables. To take Oxford Saïd to the next level, we need to raise additional funding, which is one of my top priorities as Dean. First, a world-class business school needs to support students from around the world, so scholarship funding is essential. Second, a world-class faculty needs the support of funded posts. Beyond traditional funding needs, however, are other important requirements that relate directly to our positioning. To be truly “embedded” in Oxford, we must support the University as well as benefit from it, and a significant funding priority for us is to establish an entrepreneurship centre serving the 22,000 students of the entire University. Furthermore, if we care about “world-scale problems” we need to support our unique educational programmes where we expose students to the global issues of the coming decades. Finally, we have a unique opportunity to create a new leadership facility situated in a historic Thames-side location, to bring about the transformation of organisations through Executive Education. These are big, bold projects, and we must engage with friends of the School, Oxonians and others around the globe to find supporters who will share this vision. Our forward-looking fundraising goals are substantial. Our growing alumni network comprises 14,500 School degree and Executive Education programme participants as well as other Oxonians interested in business. We owe our alumni a great deal, and the development of the School’s alumni relations is a key part of the Director’s role. Our previous Director built the department of 12 people from scratch in the last four years before returning to the US to join her family. At this point, we hope to find the right candidate who will not only provide superb leadership to our Development and Alumni Relations teams, but who will also join me in telling our story around the globe, finding people who share our vision, and contributing substantially to raise the funding required to meet our strategic aims. A modern business executive needs to be able to engage in the big global questions, and our model of an embedded school within Oxford University can help transform individuals, organisations and society. I am looking forward to working with the individual who can lead our Development and Alumni Relations activities and help us fulfil this vision. Yours, Professor Peter Tufano Peter Moores Dean

Introduction

Saïd Business School has established itself as a leading centre for business education and research. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including its flagship one-year Masters in Business Administration (MBA), a global top-ten Executive Masters in Business Administration (EMBA) programme, and other Masters programmes (including a Masters in Financial Economics (MFE) and Masters in Law and Finance (MLF), each of which is taught jointly with other Oxford departments). Its Executive Education programmes are ranked in the Top 10 across the world. Its undergraduate programme is the most selective across all of Oxbridge. It has recently embarked on a new stage of an ambitious strategy, and provides a supportive, collegiate and entrepreneurial environment to staff, faculty and students.

In addition to a sharp focus on teaching finance, strategy and the other essential elements of a firstclass business education, the School has a track record of training entrepreneurs. It houses two entrepreneurship centres (one of which, the Skoll Centre, focuses on social impact) which are at the forefront of a vibrant interest in entrepreneurship throughout the University of Oxford. Over the next five years, the School aims to establish a nexus of support to help it fulfil its ambitious strategy. In order to accomplish this, the School is seeking an outstanding individual to shape and lead the School’s Development and Alumni Relations functions, and who has the ability to engage philanthropists, trusts and foundations, and global companies at the most senior level.

The School delivers business education and groundbreaking research that transforms individuals, organisations, business practice, and society. Its mission is to be a world-class business school community, embedded in a world-class university, tackling world-scale problems. Developing and maintaining relationships with alumni, friends, potential funders and corporate contacts is a central aspect of the School’s planning.

Role Description The role in context Over the last two years, the School has strengthened its professional teams and core support services (including outward-facing teams such as Marketing and Communications and programme recruitment); and has taken steps to integrate a very sizeable executive education business into the core of the School. It has been engaging distinguished visitors and speakers with influential international networks; welcoming new international members to its Board; reshaping its Business Advisory Council; and increasing its visibility in the global media. In order to achieve its fundraising goals, the School must continue to strengthen its Development and Alumni Relations team, expand its network of high net worth (HNW) individuals and organisations, and at the same time deepen the most promising relationships. This will require strategic investment of time and resources into strategic cultivation tactics: private and public events; professionalised communications on funding needs; innovative business plans and funding models; establishing HNW communities per funding need; and – potentially – develop a highly influential volunteer “development board” that can articulate the School’s vision and champion its fundraising goals.

“A world-class business school community, embedded in a world-class university, tackling world scale problems”, Saïd Business School is in a stage of dramatic transformation and seeks continuing and new support for, amongst other things, the following which have been identified as key priorities : •

Faculty posts and associated research funding

Scholarships

Establishing a new University Wide Entrepreneurship Centre.

Converting a heritage Oxford site (the Osney Power Station, built in the Victorian era) into a state-of-the-art educational and residential centre for leadership development for executives from around the world.

The School will fund these projects by: •

Achieving a consistent, annual number of gifts to the School in unrestricted funds and restricted funds in support of the School’s strategic objectives.

Increasing the number and type of new donors giving at all levels; to increase the number of influential individuals and the number of alumni donors within the School’s community.

Establishing the transparency and efficiency of funding agreements to identify unrestricted funds which reflect the value of the Oxford Saïd brand.

Creating a stronger culture of giving within the School’s community.

Increasing understanding of the School’s funding needs and the role of philanthropy among internal stakeholders, and growing support from the faculty in fundraising.

Developing close, positive working relationships to enhance co-working with and support from the development resources of the University and its Social Sciences Division (of which the School is a part).

Creating joint development opportunities with other University partners.

Developing a strategy to broaden the international fundraising footprint of the School, with domestic and international flagship events, meetings with ultra high net worth individuals (UHNW), and participation by senior colleagues in distinguished panels and influential advisory boards.
