Candidate Information Pack
Director of Development
Introduction
Ipswich School is an independent co-educational school for children from the ages of 3 to 18. It is one of the oldest schools in the country, founded before 1399, and has a rich tradition of involvement in the local community. It has developed a strong academic reputation and is well known for its sport, cultural activities and the attention given to the care and personal development of individual pupils. It aims to prove that enjoyment and excellent results are entirely compatible. The School comprises a Senior School and a Junior School (Ipswich Preparatory School), which includes a nursery and infant department giving an overall school size of about 1000 pupils. The School is close to the centre of the Town. As the 2015 report by ISI Inspectors confirmed, Ipswich School has a fine record of academic success, which is placed within the context of an extensive range of activities outside the classroom. Ipswich School is the only school in Suffolk to have featured in the Sunday Times Parent Power top 200, based on public exam results. The School regularly competes at national level in Hockey and other sports for both boys and girls. The Chapel Choir has broadcast on Radio 4 and sung Evensong in St Paul’s Cathedral, King’s College Cambridge and on tour as far afield as New York. These are just some examples of the extensive achievements of pupils at the School. Candidate Information Pack Director of Development, Ipswich School
Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk, with about 150,000 inhabitants. The town has a lively theatre, a championship football club, a multiplex cinema and a film theatre, a strong musical life, and clubs and societies catering for many sporting and cultural interests. In the summer the Aldeburgh Festival enriches the musical life of the area. Road and rail links to London, Cambridge, the Midlands and the North are excellent, with Liverpool Street being just over an hour away. Also within easy reach are many attractive and historic small towns and villages. The coastline is a special feature, offering large unspoilt areas of beach and estuary for recreation.

Background to the Appointment
Throughout its 600 plus year history, Ipswich School has faced many challenges, particularly financial, and has been indebted to a long list of benefactors as well as former and current parents whose fees have helped provide the wonderful facilities it enjoys. Ipswich School has no permanent endowment to support its financial needs and ambitions. It is not a rich school and the welcome support it has received from legacies, benefactions and donations to date has been used to fund essential projects such as new buildings, sporting facilities, and scholarships and bursaries. It relies upon fees and the generosity of parents, alumni and members of the wider School community. The School’s vision is to changes lives and, in the longer term, to make access to Ipswich School needs blind and to support the provision of resources of the highest standard to maintain the School’s position as the premier school of choice in the area. To deliver this vision, philanthropic income is essential and the School now seeks an outstanding individual with initiative and energy to develop and implement a fundraising strategy. This will involve working with the School’s retained consultants, More Partnership, to build a multi-faceted programme to include an annual fund, telephone campaign, a legacy campaign and major gifts programme. Significant ‘friend-raising’ efforts over the past 10 years have led to a strong alumni community which harbours enormous warmth towards the School. There is a database of 4000 individuals which is in good shape, and uses Raisers Edge.

The School is committed to keeping its doors open to as wide a range of entry from the area as possible. Pupils are drawn from a variety of social, economic and ethnic backgrounds. There is a wide range of entrants through the provision of scholarships and bursaries at all points of entry. Since the removal of Government’s Assisted Places scheme, the School has taken on an increasing commitment to support pupils who would otherwise be unable to benefit from its transformational education experience. The School seeks to maintain this diversity and ensure it for the future through continued financial support. Crucially, the Development function has the full support of the Governors, the Head and senior staff of the School. This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving independent school, to develop its fundraising and to build on the combination of internal support, clearly identified needs and good alumni relations.
