The College

Founded in 1862, Haileybury is an independent coeducational boarding and day school which offers a fully-rounded education for boys and girls aged 11 to 18. There are 757 pupils of whom 65 per cent are boarders. Set in over 500 acres of rural Hertfordshire countryside, its grounds are some of the most exquisite and beautiful of any school in Britain. To walk around Haileybury is to walk in the footsteps of some of the most influential people in the story of Britain and, indeed, the world. Since its earliest days, Haileybury’s distinctive and progressive learning environment has shaped many prominent, influential and distinguished figures. In law, politics, military service, the arts, sports, the creative industries and elsewhere, Haileybury’s contribution to the world is profound. Combining a progressive learning environment with a focus on service to society, the College has, since its earliest days, helped develop individuals who have gone on to shape the world in which we live today. Notable alumni include postwar Prime Minister Clement Attlee, the popular and prolific playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn, and successful filmmaker Christopher Nolan (Insomnia, Interstellar and the famous Batman trilogy).

Haileybury has a strong academic reputation and is as a top IB school, rated at number 12 in The Times 2015 IB League Table and 72nd in the Daily Telegraph’s 2015 Independent School A Level results table. A key part of its philosophy is about empowering each child to follow their passion and to build their self-confidence. So it also provides an enormous range of co-curricular opportunities, spanning everything from music to Everest Base Camp trips and drama to scuba diving in Thailand. The College believes a caring environment is crucial to happiness and fulfillment for each individual. A unique aspect of Haileybury’s exceptional community is that more than 90% of teaching staff live on campus. This helps create a close-knit community which is particularly evident in the Lower School, which is a “school within a school” for Years 7 and 8, and includes its own Boarding House – Highfield. Both Boarders and Day pupils join one of the twelve Boarding Houses when they enter the Main School (Years 9-13). This creates strong “family” groups of about 55 pupils per House. This warm and friendly environment gives each and every child the confidence to find their identity, embracing challenges and successes in their personal journey of discovery. Haileybury is located between Hertford and Hoddesdon about 20 miles north of central London, and has good rail and road links. Development Background

Formal fundraising activities at Haileybury ceased around three years ago. Prior to this, there were a number of campaign initiatives aimed at raising funds for the following projects: •

2009/2010 - Modern languages centre - £2.5m campaign

2010/2011 - Astroturf appeal - £650,000 campaign

2012 - 150 Club - the Atlee Bursary Fund

To ensure that Haileybury continues to provide the very best facilities for its current pupils and maintains its attractiveness to prospective families, the College needs to continue to invest in its facilities and infrastructure. Several major building projects have been identified as part of the five year strategic plan, which will require either partial or complete funding outwith the College’s reserves. These exciting projects include:

In addition, a business networking club was established which was not about fundraising directly but rather was an outreach initiative aimed at making potential business links. There were also earlier efforts to raise legacy income in 2004 and 2009 when legacy packs were mailed to Old Haileyburians aged 55.

Three new all-weather pitches

Plans for a multi-purpose hall which can seat up to 1000

A new classroom block

A new Sixth Form Centre

While fundraising has not been developed proactively for some time at the College, Haileybury has been fortunate to receive some large donations, principally from one family trust, which has enabled the College to undertake some significant projects which undoubtedly would not have gone forward without their support. Members of the family trust are actively engaged with Haileybury and are currently considering support for two large scale capital works projects.

Philathropic income will also fund bursaries and scholarships.
