Letter from the Director of Development Dear candidate, Thank you for your interest in The Courtauld Institute of Art and in the senior position of Head of Major Gifts. The role presents a fantastic opportunity for a professional who wants to play a leadership role in the Arts and Education sectors as part of ambitious and successful development team. Founded through philanthropy in 1932, The Courtauld Institute of Art is one of the most prestigious institutions in the world for study and research in the history of art and architecture, conservation and curating. From our Central London campus in the magnificent Grade I listed Somerset House, The Courtauld offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to 550 students and is home to a celebrated Gallery featuring Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces. The quality of our teaching and research is consistently evaluated as being among the best in the UK, our Gallery regularly earns five-star reviews from national newspapers for its special exhibitions, and our alumni are leaders in the art world and the cultural sectors. The Courtauld has a dynamic vision for its future. We are embarking on a major programme of transformation to open up our physical environment, engage with new audiences, grow activities through intelligent innovation, and establish a yet stronger financial foundation in order to ensure our long term sustainability. Philanthropy is critical to realising this vision and we are now in the early stages of the most ambitious fundraising campaign in The Courtauld’s history to support these critical developments. Since I joined The Courtauld in October, I have been deeply impressed by the centrality of philanthropy to the institution; the strength of the vision for the future; the range of opportunities presented by its dual identity as a university and gallery; and the warmth and engagement of our donors, alumni, members and supporters. These qualities make The Courtauld a great place to work in development, membership and alumni relations. Now is a hugely exciting time to join The Courtauld’s Development team. Building on foundations laid over many years and recent fundraising successes, we are growing our team of talented, motivated and energetic professionals to take our fundraising, membership and alumni relations programmes to new heights. The Head of Major Gifts will play a critical role at The Courtauld. The postholder will develop the strategy for major gift fundraising, lead and motivate a new team of major gift fundraisers, cultivate their own prospect portfolio, and secure donations for key funding priorities including scholarships, core activity, the capital project and the endowment. As a senior member of the Development team, the Head of Major Gifts will also take a leadership role across the office. I hope that you will enjoy learning more about The Courtauld, the role and our team on the following pages of this information pack and I look forward to the prospect of meeting you in the near future. Yours sincerely, Dr Kary Kelly

Courtauld Connects The Courtauld is privileged to occupy one of London’s most outstanding 18th century buildings, an architectural masterpiece which was once the home of the great institutions of the enlightenment, the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Arts. Somerset House is itself a work of art, and The Courtauld plans to use it as a showcase for its attempts to ensure the relevance of the art of the past as well as the present. Courtauld Connects is thus a vision of institutional transformation in which the project to redevelop the outstanding buildings The Courtauld occupies is both

The capital redevelopment project will have a transformational effect not only on the future of The Courtauld, but also for the future of the international arts and heritage landscape. In reimagining this building, through a combination of restoration and the sensitive transformation of its spaces, The Courtauld aims to show the value of the past and its ability to inspire the present and the future. Courtauld Connects is a key philanthropic priority, which sits alongside fundraising to build the endowment, for scholarships, and to support the corecosts of our teaching, research and collections.

Development at The Courtauld Institute of Art The Courtauld’s Development Office was established in 2005. The Development Office is responsible for delivering philanthropic income to support The Courtauld’s strategic initiatives and building relationships with alumni, friends and supporters through fundraising, membership, and alumni relations programmes. Ten years ago the Friends Scheme consisted of 300 loyal members, The Courtauld received a small number of key revenue and there were just a handful of important larger donors. Since then, working closely with the Director, the Governing Board, colleagues and volunteers, the development function has been built up with great success. Membership numbers have risen six-fold, alumni relations activity has steadily increased, and significant sums have been raised from individuals, trusts and foundations, and corporations. The warmth of the relationships built with alumni and supporters has been critical to this success, and there is a well-established network of international champions particularly in the US The Courtauld's two Membership programmes – Friends of The Courtauld and the patron’s group, the Samuel Courtauld Society – are extremely active with over 50
Now, with Courtauld Connects on the horizon, there is new scale of ambition at The Courtauld, giving the Development Office an opportunity to make an even greater impact across the institution by expanding philanthropic income and strengthening its partnerships with alumni, members and supporters. The top fundraising priorities for the next five years are the Courtauld Connects capital project, the endowment, scholarships and annual support for the core operating costs of the academic programmes and collections. Since the start of the financial year in August 2015, over £7.5m in new gifts and pledges and a £9.4m award from the Heritage Lottery Fund have been secured.

membership and alumni relations programmes to new heights. This includes the expansion of its Major Gifts Team. The Courtauld’s Governing Board, which is currently chaired by the James Hughes-Hallett, takes a strong interest in development and alumni relations, and in July 2015 Edward Dolman was appointed as the inaugural Chair of Courtauld Connects Fundraising Campaign. Since the appointment of Dr Kary Kelly as Director of Development in October 2015, a new Campaign strategy and structure have been developed. The Development Department has approximately 16 members of staff and is currently organised as per the diagram on the following page:
