Letter from the Director of Development Dear candidate, Thank you for your interest in The Courtauld Institute of Art and in the key position of Development Manager. The role presents a fantastic opportunity for a professional who wants to make their mark in the Arts and Higher Education sectors as part of an ambitious and successful development team. Founded through philanthropy in 1932, The Courtauld Institute of Art is one of the most prestigious centres in the world for the history of art and architecture, conservation and curating. From our Central London campus in the magnificent Grade I listed Somerset House, The Courtauld offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to 550 students and is home to a celebrated Gallery featuring Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces. The quality of our teaching and research is consistently evaluated as among the best in the UK, our Gallery regularly earns five-star reviews from national newspapers for its special exhibitions, and our alumni are leaders in the art world and the cultural sectors. The Courtauld has a dynamic vision for its future. We are embarking on a major programme of transformation to open up our physical environment, engage with new audiences, drive intelligent innovation, and secure our long term sustainability. Philanthropy is critical to realising this vision and we are now in the early stages of the most ambitious fundraising campaign in The Courtauld’s history to support these critical developments. Since I joined The Courtauld in October 2015, I have been deeply impressed by the centrality of philanthropy to the institution; the strength of the vision for the future; the range of opportunities presented by its dual identity as a university and gallery; and the warmth and engagement of our donors, alumni, members and supporters. These qualities make The Courtauld a great place to work in development.. Now is a hugely exciting time to join The Courtauld’s Development team. Building on foundations laid over many years and recent fundraising successes, we are growing our team of talented, motivated and energetic professionals to take our fundraising, membership and alumni relations programmes to new heights. As part of the Major Gifts Team, the Development Manager play a critical role in the campaign by managing a portfolio of major gift and legacy prospects to secure donations for scholarships and core activities as well as for the capital project and for our endowment. The postholder will lead our growing legacies programme, planning and implementing legacy appeals, building relationships with legacy prospects, and managing the administration of legacy gifts when they are received. In addition, the post holder will have the opportunity contribute to the overarching strategy for fundraising as part of the Major Gifts Team. I hope that you will enjoy learning more about The Courtauld, the role and our team on the following pages of this information pack and I look forward to the prospect of meeting you in the near future. Yours sincerely, Dr Kary Kelly

Development at The Courtauld Institute of Art The Courtauld’s Development Office was established in 2005 to manage fundraising, membership and alumni relations programmes. It is responsible for delivering philanthropic income to support The Courtauld’s strategic initiatives and since August 2015, over £7.5m in new gifts and pledges and a £9.4m award from the Heritage Lottery Fund have been secured. Ten years ago the membership scheme consisted of 300 loyal members, The Courtauld received a small number of key revenue donations and there were just a handful of important larger donors. Since then, working closely with the Director (Professor Deborah Swallow), the Governing Board, colleagues and volunteers, the development function has been built up with great success. Membership numbers have risen six-fold, alumni relations activity has steadily increased, and significant sums have been raised from individuals, trusts and foundations, and corporations. The warmth of the relationships built with alumni and supporters has been critical to this success, and there is a well-established network of international champions, particularly in the US. The Courtauld's two Membership programmes – Friends of The Courtauld and the patrons’ group, the Samuel Courtauld Society – are extremely active and there is well-established alumni relations programme, with an annual cycle of events and communications for our 7,200 graduates. Alumni, members and other supporters regularly

Now, with Courtauld Connects on the horizon, there is new scale of ambition at The Courtauld, giving the Development Office an opportunity to make an even greater impact across the institution by expanding philanthropic income and strengthening its partnerships with alumni, members and supporters. The top fundraising priorities for the next five years are the Courtauld Connects capital project, the endowment, scholarships and annual support for the academic programmes and collections. Building on this success, The Courtauld is building its team of talented, motivated and high-achieving development professionals to take its fundraising, membership and alumni relations programmes to new heights. This includes the expansion of the Major Gifts Team, which is pivotal of the success of the Courtauld Connects campaign.
