One woman in four experiences domestic violence at some point in her life.
Candidate Information Pack Director of Fundraising, Refuge

Letter from Chief Executive Dear Candidate, Thank you for your interest in Refuge and the exciting new post of director of fundraising. Do you think it is a national disgrace that in England and Wales, two women a week are killed by their partner or ex-partner? Or that one woman in every four will experience domestic violence at some point during her life-time? Or that 750,000 children in this country witness domestic violence every year? Refuge does! Refuge is committed to a world where domestic violence and other forms of gender violence are not tolerated and where women and children can live in safety. We aim to empower women and children to rebuild their lives, free from violence and fear. Refuge is the country’s largest provider of specialist services for women and children experiencing violence and abuse. In 1971, we opened the very first women’s refuge in the world; today, Refuge supports over 3,800 women and children a day in its national network of services. We advise Government and provide a voice for women and children experiencing domestic violence, ensuring that their needs are represented at the highest level. Refuge also works hard to ensure improvements in police response so that women and children receive the protection they need and deserve. We support families who have lost loved ones to domestic violence and help them hold the police and other state agencies to account. Refuge runs awardwinning prevention and public education campaigns,

Introduction
Refuge opened the world’s first safe house for women and children fleeing domestic violence in Chiswick, West London in 1971. Since then the charity has grown to become the country’s largest single provider of specialist domestic violence services. On any given day, its national network of services supports over 3,800 women and children. Committed to a world where domestic violence is not tolerated and where women and children can live in safety, Refuge aims to empower women and children to rebuild their lives, free from violence and fear.

Refuge provides life-saving support to women and children escaping domestic violence. It does not take a ‘one size fits all’ approach; women and children experience domestic violence in many different ways and have very different needs. The charity therefore provides and runs a range of services including safe accommodation in women’s refuges across 11 local authorities; independent domestic violence advocates (IDVAs) within police stations, courts, hospitals, children’s centres and community locations; a national 24-hour helpline in partnership with Women’s Aid, online information available to all as well as culturally specific services. Refuge also delivers specialist outreach services which provide support for those experiencing gender-based violence, including rape and sexual assault, stalking, prostitution, sexual exploitation, trafficking, female genital mutilation (FGM), forced marriage and so-called ‘honour’-based violence. Expert staff work closely with each woman and child to develop a bespoke support plan to meet their needs.

Introduction
Around two-thirds of the residents in the charity’s refuges are children, the majority of whom are of preschool age. There are an estimated 39,000 babies living with domestic violence in the UK, others die before they are born during assaults to their mother and many more young people whose lives are negatively affected by the violence they witness or suffer directly in their own homes. They make up some of the most vulnerable and at risk children in the country and, as such, require specialist support. Where possible, Refuge provides in house support to children and young people. We also work closely with health visitors, schools and other community agencies, to ensure children are safe and help them re-establish secure routines, build confidence and begin to recover from the impacts of abuse.
Refuge also helps to prevent domestic violence through campaigning, awareness raising, training and research. It works in partnership with other agencies to raise awareness of domestic violence, its causes and solutions. Refuge believes that educating the public and training professionals is not an add-on; it is the only way to bring an end to domestic violence. Its awardwinning advertising campaigns reach out to women and children and challenge the destructive myths surrounding domestic violence. Refuge also responds to key policy consultations and debates, ensuring that the needs of abused women and children are reflected in national legislation. The charity has been instrumental to the shift in the legal understanding of domestic violence as well as challenging social attitudes. Looking forward, Refuge aims to build on its strong track record of supporting women and children who have experienced violence and abuse to develop its services further, ensuring everyone who needs to can benefit from specialist support.

Fundraising at Refuge
Refuge’s fundraising team is an essential part of Refuge’s ability to support and protect women and children from all forms of domestic, sexual and genderbased violence and abuse. In the current climate of austerity and local authority funding cuts, the need to fundraise has never been more critical. Refuge has invested substantially in its fundraising capacity as it becomes increasingly important to the continuation of its life-saving - services. So far the efforts have yielded very positive results. The fundraising team works across individuals, events, trusts and foundations, corporate partnerships and philanthropy achieved a current £2.2 million in voluntary income. The aim now and the challenge for the appointee will be to grow this to £3million over the next three years.

The charity works with local communities, organisations and the press to raise funds on a local level, as well as national fundraising events which raise both awareness on a major scale and hundreds of thousands of pounds each year. Refuge is represented at national events such as Virgin London Marathon and the cycling event; RideLondon – Surrey 100. New to the events calendar in 2015 was the charity’s first owned event; ‘Walk4’, a 10km walking event inspired by, and in support of, the 1 in 4 women who experience domestic violence at some time in their lives. Refuge is also finding innovative new ways to fundraise. A digital virtual gift product; Refuge parcels, was successfully launched at Christmas 2014 and in February 2015, a new regular giving fundraising product ‘Support a Stay’ was created. This allows supporters to make a regular gift to support women and children fleeing violence.

The director of fundraising will work closely with the chief executive, Sandra Horley in relation to major donors. Sandra has established excellent relationships with major donors over the years and is very committed to this area of work. Refuge has a number of high net worth individuals and well known philanthropists who have supported the charities’ core funds for a number of years. In addition, there are numerous trusts and foundations who support our work.
