Introduction Founded in 1945, Henley was the first business school to be established in the UK and is one of the oldest and most respected schools in Europe. Consistently ranked among the world’s top 50 business schools by the Financial Times and The Economist, Henley is also amongst an elite group of business schools - the top 1% in the world – to be triple-accredited for the quality and capability of its graduates, faculty and their research. Today, Henley Business School has more than 4,500 students undertaking programmes from undergraduate degrees to Executive MBAs supported by more than 140 academic faculty. Most students study at one of the two campuses in the UK - Reading and Henley while over 1,000 study overseas through campuses and partners including in South Africa, Malaysia, China, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Finland and Malta. The students studying with Henley in the UK come from across the globe including Mainland Europe, South East Asia, India, and Africa with smaller numbers coming from other regions. This diversity is reflected in The Henley Community of close to 70,000 alumni based in more than 140 countries.
Henley’s programme portfolio is very diverse covering fields from finance and real estate to informatics and leadership. It caters for students at all stages of their lives, from undergraduates embarking on their careers, to senior managers studying part- time on an Executive MBA, MSc in Coaching and MA in Leadership programmes to enhance their leadership skills. Most of these programmes are marketed directly at the potential participant but this is often supplemented by promoting the programmes to organisations. In some cases Henley designs and delivers programmes specifically for an individual organisation such as the MSc in Strategic Marketing which has been taken up by Deutsche Telecom, ING and most recently Roche. Henley’s Executive Education started the management development revolution, and it remains at the forefront; nurturing great people to fulfil their potential, and fuelling organisational success in an increasingly complex and challenging environment. The executive education programmes are designed for every stage of individual and organisational development: delivering short-term impact and long-term transformation whilst allowing executives to work whilst studying. Again these are promoted to both individuals and to organisations that use Henley as a core part of their leadership development. Henley Business School is part of the University of Reading, which is placed within the top 1% of all global universities. As part of a research-intensive university, Henley has both strength and depth in research across a wide range of fields - from real estate and finance to international business and entrepreneurship. With deep connections with industry, Henley has policy makers and practitioners who are engaged with and benefit from its research. There is a very strong community of research scholars - with both a vibrant PhD programme and one of the largest and longest standing DBA programmes in the world. Henley Business School is based on both the Whiteknights Campus, a 130 hectares of parkland setting close to Reading town centre and the Greenlands Campus, a former country house and Grade II listed building on the banks of the river Thames just outside Henley-on-Thames. Reading itself has over 5km of riverside paths and around 100 public parks. The town has a rich history dating back to the Roman period, and is now home to visitor attractions such as the ruins of the medieval Reading Abbey in the
Reading has excellent transport links to London, Bristol, Oxford and Cardiff as well as to Heathrow and Gatwick airports. As a result, it is an important commercial centre for the south of England, with several UK and multinational companies having their headquarters or a significant presence in town including Microsoft, ING Direct, Wrigley, PepsiCo and Verizon.
town centre. Today, Reading is a lively town with a population of around 235,000 and a wealth of shopping facilities, green spaces, comedy clubs, music venues, sports centres and riverside bars and restaurants. As a town, it has a warm and multicultural atmosphere, easy to navigate with plenty to discover. The Madejski Stadium is home to Reading FC and the London Irish Rugby Club, and seats 24,000 people. The town is also famous for the Reading Festival, one of the largest music events in the UK, with over 87,000 visitors each year.

Development and Alumni at Henley
The Business School has a dedicated team of 18 staff supporting its fundraising, alumni relations and business engagement activity. This group works closely with the University of Reading’s Campaigns and Supporter Engagement Office particularly on areas such as the recently launched campaign, principal gifts, co-ordinating fundraising initiatives, stewardship activity and data management. The two teams support each other in areas where there is mutual benefit and synergy.
To date, fundraising has been successful across the Business School which has gained increasing momentum. It has raised funds for specific projects, such as the Alan Rugman Memorial Fund currently at circa £100,000, as well as a buoyant annual telethon and pioneer donor programme (those giving more than £1,000 pa).
In terms of fundraising, the University has just launched its first major campaign IMAGINE and the Business School will be key to its overall success. The Business School has developed, with faculty input, a wide range of projects and are currently creating the cases for support. The Business School’s focus of the campaign is Shaping the Future of Business, building on the success of the 70th anniversary celebrations. There are four key themes in which the projects fall: Opening Young Minds to Business; Developing Global Citizens; Ethical Business; and Supporting the Diversity of Talent. There are considerable opportunities to frame this campaign in order to make it a real success.
is now part of the Business School and managed by the Development, Alumni Relations and Engagement team. Particularly notable is the Pathways to Property project which aims to widen access into the property profession and has raised over £1 million.
The longest standing success has been through the Reading Real Estate Foundation [RREF], a foundation started by Real Estate and Planning (REP) alumni which

Development and Alumni at Henley
The Henley alumni team delivers a wide range of events including business briefings, keynote lectures, debates, webinars, and a wide range of social events. Many of these are delivered in the UK, either in London or at one of the two Business School campuses, but there are a growing number of events organised overseas often when faculty and other Business School staff, particularly the recruitment team, are travelling. Some of these events are open to all of the alumni while others are targeted at specific groups. There are a number of established Special Interest Groups, led by key alumni, which organise their own events with the support of the alumni team. The strongest of these groups is the Real Estate and Planning alumni which has a very full programme of events, but other groups such as the Henley Women in Leadership group have a growing following. As well as events, there is a strong volunteering programme which has become more formalised in recent years. This includes alumni acting as mentors to current students, those becoming formal advocates as recruitment ambassadors and alumni leading in regions and for special interest groups. Two current volunteers have recently been recognised by the University for their contribution through the new “Volunteer of the Year awards.
The Development, Alumni Relations and Engagement team also has oversight of a programme of events aimed at corporate contacts, key supporters and donors under the banner of Engaging Business. These events are by invitation only and held in London, Reading and Henley. Speakers have included Dido Harding, CEO of Talk Talk, Alison Carnwarth, Chairman of Land Securities and Savio Kwan, past COO of Ali Baba. Given the nature of the Business School and its wide range of activity, the Development, Alumni Relations, and Engagement team works closely with the other professional teams within the Business School. The key relationships are: Marketing and Recruitment to ensure that alumni are recommending Henley both formally and informally; Henley Careers to help secure placements, internships and graduate roles with the organisations that alumni work for; and Executive Education to promote these programmes to the alumni community.
