Our mission To support the wellbeing of all involved in retail - be it yesterday, today or tomorrow - including all those supplying and providing support services to the retail industry

Candidate Information Pack Director of Fundraising, retailTRUST

Letter from the Chief Executive Dear Candidate One might think that a charity which has been around for 184 years does not immediately look like it will present the prospect for an innovative and stimulating career move. Nothing could be further from the truth at retailTRUST. Our industry sector, the biggest in the UK, thrives on innovation, ideas and creativity. It attracts more than its fair share of creative entrepreneurs. Its leaders often start by stacking the shelves and then rise to the corridors of power as Directors. It is the most meritocratic industry. It is a dynamic sector. Retail is the fastest-moving sector and it requires its trade charity to be up to the task of adapting to its rapidly changing needs. We are at the heart of the digitalisation of the lives of consumers and the staff who serve them. There could not be a better time for a truly innovative fundraising leader to join us. We are transforming ourselves to combine the best attributes of a traditional 20th century benevolent charity with the best 21st century social enterprise attributes.

We are a small but dynamic team which has real impact in everything we do. In fundraising, we have a great opportunity to deliver genuine change and impact. This role will be high profile, interacting with the charity’s sponsors and beneficiaries. I look forward to meeting you and sharing our vision for the future. Richard Boland - CEO

Our mantra for management is driven by the four “C words - Continue, Change, Challenge, Create.

About the Charity retailTRUST is the leading UK charity which supports the wellbeing of the 4.5 million people working in retail, plus those retired from the sector and its associated businesses. The United Kingdom has the third largest retail sector in the world, with 1 in 10 of the country’s workforce employed in the sector. Retail workers are more likely to be from a minority ethnic background and are more likely to be minimum or low waged. As the living wage is currently only £7.20 /hour for workers over the age of 25, staff can be left vulnerable when something goes wrong. retailTRUST provides services such as counselling, legal and debt advice, financial support, hardship grants, redundancy programmes , vocational and educational funding, retirement housing and a free helpline to those within the sector who need support and assistance. The charity was founded by artisan retailers in 1832 as the Linen and Woolen Drapers Institute to support their staff. Princess Elizabeth became a Patron in 1948 and Her Majesty The Queen has remained a gracious supporter of the charity and its beneficiaries since her coronation in 1953. The charity’s history and heritage gives it the unique perspective needed to target help and support.

Today, retailTRUST operates nationally across the UK, with support centres in Derby, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow
and London. Wellbeing services are delivered through three products; ‘cottageHOMES’, providing quality supported living for those who have retired from retail; ‘retailHUB’, providing advice and support for those currently employed; and ‘retailRIGHT’, which partners with employers and educational institutions to provide vocational development opportunities. The Trust is sponsoring a new initiative, ‘retailCURe’, a credit union for those working in retail to encourage responsible and affordable saving and borrowing . This is a much needed in an industry where over half of all employees earn under £10/hour. Combined with an expansion of the ‘retailRIGHT’ range of services and traineeship and apprenticeship programmes, this will be an exciting new chapter. retailCURE will be a separate legal entity for Regulatory reasons but has been given life by retailTRUST.   4

Fundraising at the retailTRUST Richard Boland joined the retailTRUST as CEO over three years ago with the aim of re-shaping and stimulating the future of a charity which looks after the 4 million workers in the retail sector, including its supply chain and services. Increasingly Digital is an important part of that remit. With his vision for the future of retailTRUST, Richard has revitalised the organisation. The strategic direction for the Trust has not only enthused and reenergised the Trustees and the staff, it has laid the foundations for an exciting case for support for fundraising. Richard understands how important it is for fundraising to be embedded in the heart of the organisation and has therefore ensured that the overall strategy is in place before proceeding with the important appointment of a new Director of Fundraising.

The new Director of Fundraising will build on the success of this vision and will create and implement a five year fundraising plan for the Trust. S/he will work closely with Richard and the Senior Management Team to drive forward a successful fundraising strategy. There has been an exciting step-change in the direction of the retailTRUST, and the new Director of Fundraising will play a vital role in ensuring that the funds are brought in to support the Trust’s projects and services. The retailTRUST looks after those who have given their working lives to the sector, but it is also a forward-looking, dynamic organisation that wants to play a transformative and positive role in shaping the future for those working in retail. This vision is an exciting one for the new Director of Fundraising to build further.
