Caius has one of the best adult choirs in Cambridge and its rowers have been the most successful Boat Club on the River over the last 20 years. It is known as a friendly, inclusive and harmonious college with a strong sense of community and students from a wide cross-section of backgrounds.

Gonville & Caius is situated in the centre of town minutes away from the market square, a short walk from the University Library and ideally placed for all the University faculties. The College has exceptional facilities: beautiful buildings around the “Old Courts” in the city centre, as well as modern accommodation in extensive gardens just over the river at West Road. But, most importantly, Caius has a spirit of endeavour and excellence, which is as relevant today as when the College was first founded over 650 years ago.

A History of Philanthropy Since its foundation in 1348, Caius has relied heavily on the generosity of Caians and other friends of the College. For over 650 years, their gifts have helped to sustain and enrich the College as a place of academic excellence and ensured its continued growth. Gonville & Caius in the twenty-first century relies on benefactions to sustain its tradition of excellence. Caius has benefited from many gifts over the centuries, beginning with its first major benefaction in the early 1350s which was made by Bishop Bateman following the foundation of the College by Edmund Gonville in 1348. Several bequests provided the basis for the original chapel and the development of Gonville Court in the 1400s, and in the early 1500s a legacy from Dame Anne Scroop brought much of the land between West Road and Sidgwick Avenue, where Harvey Court, the Stephen Hawking Building and various College houses providing student and Fellows’ accommodation now stand. In 1557, the College’s greatest benefactor, John Caius, gave substantial land and property both to enlarge the College’s main site and to provide income to support College expenditure.
