Development Director Candidate Information Pack

in partnership with

Letter from Ed Kessler When I founded the Woolf Institute in 1998, little did I realise that its contribution to improving our understanding of the relationship between religion and society would be as significant as it has become. In increasingly turbulent times, with tensions within and between faith communities, we are playing an important role in increasing understanding of the influence of religion, especially among the Abrahamic faiths, which is vital to fostering a stable, civilised and vibrant society. Our move into a fit-for-purpose facility next summer provides us with a wonderful opportunity to deliver an increased and wider range of educational programmes and provide a centre of academic excellence recognised throughout the world. Thank you for your interest in our work and if you feel you are the right person to meet this challenge, I look forward to hearing from you. Dr Ed Kessler MBE

The Woolf Institute The Woolf Institute is an independent, academic institution and registered charity. Its combination of leading and transformative research with broadbased public education makes it distinctive and a global leader in addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the relationship between religion and society. In today’s political and economic climate, the work of the Woolf Institute is more relevant than ever. With an outstanding reputation, it has seen significant growth and use of its research and outreach programmes. Established in Cambridge in 1998, the Woolf Institute was borne of a very simple, and yet hopeful premise: that through a robust, multi-disciplinary and scholarly study of the encounter between Jews, Christians and Muslims, we can better understand and guide our society at present, and thus inform and shape a more tolerant, respectful and collective future together. With close links to the University of Cambridge, the Institute is recognised around the world for the excellence of its research, teaching, policy and public education programmes. The teaching and research examines common purpose and points of difference between Jews, Christians and Muslims from a multidisciplinary perspective. The Institute works all over the world, including the Middle East, North Africa and the United States. In addition to the pursuit of knowledge, the Woolf Institute designs innovative public education programmes aimed at improving public and voluntary sector services and linking difference with the broader sustainability of communities.

Woolf Institute staff teach on Cambridge University courses and the Institute also offers e-learning courses, conducts policy and academic research projects, and delivers training courses to a variety of audiences including the NHS and Hospice movement, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, faith leaders and local government. The Institute is at an exciting stage in its development. Increasingly centre stage in understanding forces which look set to shape world events for the rest of the 21st century, it is moving to a purpose-built building in the heart of Cambridge in September 2017. The new building will enable the Institute to increase its student numbers, as well as its research on issues including end of life care and foreign policy. It will also incorporate an e-learning facility for the Institute’s global audience, which includes students and academics from across the globe. As the Woolf Institute moves into a transformative phase of growth, it now seeks its first Development Director to play a pivotal role in this intensive and exciting period. The Development Director will lead the implementation of an ambitious development strategy for growth. This is an opportunity for someone who has ambition, drive and enthusiasm.

Development at the Woolf Institute

The Woolf Institute has a long tradition of philanthropic fundraising. Most recently, in 2013, the Institute launched a £10 million capital appeal with the help of a fundraising consultancy, of which £1 million is for an endowment fund. This will conclude in early 2017. The appointment of a new Development Director will bring philanthropic fundraising entirely in-house and the new postholder’s responsibility will be to develop and implement the fundraising strategy to build its endowment and revenue income.

The Development Director will be a member of the Senior Management Team and lead a team of two. The postholder will provide leadership to the office and be responsible for setting and controlling its budget in consultation with the Director, Strategy and Implementation.

The Development Director will work closely with Dr Ed Kessler, Founder Director, and the Institute’s senior management team who will play a key part in the raising of funds to enable the Institute to deliver its vision for the future. S/he will also work closely with the Development Council, chaired by Sir Mick Davis of X2 Resources with support from members such as Lord Woolf, Lord Saatchi and other influential business people from the UK and abroad.
