Director of Development St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford Candidate Information Pack
in partnership with
Letter from the Principal Dear Candidate, Thank you for your interest in St Edmund Hall. St Edmund Hall is a rather special place – both distinctive and distinguished within the Oxford colleges. This place changes people’s lives, and I have been struck by the intensity of feeling for the Hall. Whatever their age, background or subject, they have a huge affection for the community that is The Hall. People speak often of “Hall Spirit”. That spirit enhances the quality of the academic, cultural and sporting success of students whilst in Oxford, and the quality of support from alumni. We have a successful development programme based on a set of academic and infrastructure plans. We know we can do more to secure our future, hence the importance of the Director of Development post. Development will be my priority and together we will ensure a productive and effective programme that will integrate with the appointment of the next Principal. Only by realising our development plans will we make sure we have the brightest students taught by the best minds – no matter what their background. The post is available at an exciting time, and offers much ‘freedom to succeed’. I would like to encourage your application, and hope to meet you and welcome you to the Hall. Development at St Edmund Hall St Edmund Hall is not well endowed compared to other Oxford colleges, but has successfully improved its financial position in recent years. As a result of prudent financial management and donations from its alumni, friends and foundations, its endowment has grown substantially. The College is firmly committed to enhancing the education and facilities available to its students through fundraising. Ongoing funding changes in Higher Education mean the College will be increasingly reliant on its endowment income and donations to provide an excellent Oxford education to the most talented students, regardless of their financial resources. The College’s Development & Alumni Office is responsible for all development activity within St Edmund Hall, namely fundraising and alumni relations, with associated support activity such as the maintenance of the development database and the alumni website. Currently, the Development Office has four full-time staff – a Head of Development & Alumni Relations, a Development Officer, an Alumni Relations Manager and a Development Assistant. The Development & Alumni Relations office has been reconfigured over the past three years to provide a well-formed, effective and responsive organisational structure. The office is an effective, coherent group and the team are in excellent shape under the guidance of the Head, Sally Smith. This offers an excellent working environment and provides a very sound base for the support and strategic ambitions of a new Director. In addition, the Principal is very engaged in Development activities for the Hall.
In the past two years, philanthropic income has been on average £3 million per year of which approximately £350,000 comes from the annual fund (which has an average participation rate of around 18 per cent) and the remainder from legacies and major gifts. There are 8,000 active alumni with whom the College has generally warm relationships. A particular focus has been the raising of endowment to support Tutorial Fellowships. Over £4 million has been raised to support two tutorial fellowships in Law and one in Economics. The College now has an extensive portfolio of development projects which are diverse in type, amount and nature (from endowed fellowships, bursaries, and graduate scholarships to building refurbishments, and student support). The College is now ready to launch a new more focused, more ambitious fundraising effort targeting this set of projects and goals. The new Director of Development will be responsible for honing the strategy to maximise fundraising potential related to the projects, prioritise targets and lead the major gift activity. The successful candidate will join one of the world’s leading academic institutions to manage a well-run and effective office with the potential to raise gifts at a transformational level. S/he will bring innovative approaches to current activities, lead the major fundraising efforts and plan future strategic directions. This is a career-defining opportunity for an outstanding major gifts fundraiser.
