Thank you for your interest in the Royal Drawing
fundraising activity. The School is governed by an
School and the position of Head of Development. We are looking forward to being joined by a senior colleague, in this hugely important role, who will help us to secure the permanent future of the School as a specialist teaching resource, within the landscape of UK art education. The single studio that opened in 2000, as the Prince’s Drawing School, now offers full-time programmes at postgraduate and foundation level, over fifty public courses each term, and a vibrant children’s programme. More than a thousand students of all ages and abilities now draw with us every week. The School has secured a national and international reputation for excellence in the teaching of drawing, and our alumni and faculty of practising artists include the winners of many of the country’s most prestigious drawing and painting prizes. In delivering our mission to champion drawing from observation, our aim is to complement, and not compete with, the teaching
experienced and energetic board of trustees, all of whom understand the critical importance of this function. We have a wide network of supporters and influencers, here in the UK and abroad. Under the leadership of our Chairman, Howard Marks, we have raised more than half of the £25 million endowment that will secure the School’s longterm future. As a crucial route to innovation in a wide spectrum of creative activity, from fine art to film-making, from fashion design to architecture, expert teaching in drawing from observation has never been more needed, and participation in our programmes has never been higher. We want our Head of Development to be a champion for our work, and to help us share this passion amongst our current and future supporters. In turn, we will do all that we can to support our new colleague, so that they are able to enjoy and succeed in this vital role. We very much look forward to meeting you. Catherine Goodman

generosity of a wide constituency of enthusiastic supporters to enable our work. Because we believe that commitment and talent, rather than the ability pay, should determine who can access the teaching we offer, we do not charge fees for our two full-time programmes. Supporting students through the provision of scholarships, is at the heart of our fundraising message. Candidate Information Pack Head of Development, Royal Drawing School

Introduction Drawing is a primary language natural to all human beings, and fundamental to all aspects of learning and thinking from childhood onwards. It is a crucial route to innovation across the creative disciplines and beyond, from fashion, fine art and animation to film making, product design and engineering. Since its establishment in 2000 by HRH The Prince of Wales and artist Catherine Goodman, the Royal Drawing School has enjoyed great success in delivering its mission to promote the teaching and practice of drawing. The Royal Drawing School’s aim is to address the permanent need for high-quality drawing teaching in the UK. It is committed to filling the gap left by a steady erosion of observational drawing from the study of art in higher education and in schools. Each year the School runs over 250 different drawing courses for adults and children of all ages and abilities. With two full-time programmes at MA and Foundation levels, over fifty part-time public courses, and a vibrant children’s programme, more than 1,000 students receive high-quality drawing

is one of its key charitable objectives. Students on full-time programmes receive 100% scholarships. An extensive matrix of fee concessions is available to students attending public courses and over half of the children taught by the School receive full or partial fee remission. The Royal Drawing School receives no public funding, and most of its subsidised delivery is enabled by current fundraising. In 2014, trustees launched a £25 million endowment campaign to underpin the School’s long-term financial security. The campaign to date has been highly successful, securing £16 million. In order to be able to develop its charitable objectives further, the Royal Drawing School is seeking to expand its team, through the appointment of a Head of Development.
