many of our most important external relationships, while working hands on to deliver the fundraising programme across all levels of giving. You will have a track record of success in similar environments and you will bring to the RCP directly relevant experience from a comparable sector. The Royal College of Physicians has been setting higher standards in medicine for five centuries. Our work in education and training, at career stages from junior doctor to hospital consultant, is a key way in which standards of medical care in the UK remain globally respected. Our MRCP exam remains the international leader in postgraduate training for hospital specialist doctors and is a primary requirement for entry into higher specialist training as a consultant physician in the NHS As well as preparing students for exams and providing CPD, the College has a substantial role in setting national clinical guidelines for patient care. In addition, a strong evidence-based public health programme can claim to have made a significant contribution to tackling issues of great public concern such as smoking, alcohol and air quality, saving thousands of lives as a result.

The RCP is led by its president and senior college officers. All are practising NHS consultants who divide their time between the RCP and continuing to see patients. The president is elected by the fellowship every year but normally serves for four years. The current president, Professor Jane Dacre, demits office in 2018. The senior officers are supported by the professional staff led by the Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ian Bullock. Dr Bullock’s leadership team is responsible for the delivery of strategic and operational objectives as ultimately determined by the president, senior officers, and board of trustees.

Within the UK, the RCP’s network contains 19 regions. In each region, our regional advisers for training and service and our regional specialty advisers offer support to local fellows and members and the NHS. All regions have dedicated administrative support or a regional office, providing a local point of contact for our members, supporting the work of the regional advisers and offering valuable support for RCP activities within the region. Internationally, a network of international officers support the work of the international office in developing and delivering programmes to improve local health care provision.

About the Royal College of Physicians 2018 will be a very significant year for the RCP as it celebrates its 500th anniversary. Very few institutions reach such a momentous landmark – let alone with their key aims and objectives intact and as relevant as ever. The quincentennial anniversary will be a time to celebrate the RCP’s role in the long history of medical progress with a programme of activities, including an exhibition, publications, lectures and celebratory events. The College will also take the opportunity that the heightened interest the celebrations will generate to begin a fundraising appeal to its membership for core fundraising priorities. The RCP’s principal fundraising priority is to complete the capital funding of its new centre of excellence in Liverpool, RCP North. In early 2016 the RCP began discussions with three cities with a view to establishing a major base in the north that would be much-needed extra capacity for the education and examination of physicians and a place where advances and innovations could be made in medical education and care quality.
Liverpool was selected on the basis of an outstanding financial package from the local authorities and because of the opportunity for the RCP to become the anchor tenant in the new knowledge quarter of the city adjacent to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. RCP North opened its impressive facility (Phase 1) in early October 2017 while construction of the new building (Phase 2) is scheduled to commence in 2018. An architect has been selected (AHR) and advance preplanning design is underway. The estimated construction cost is £35m of which 80% has been secured and 20% is being sought from fundraising. Naming opportunities for key spaces in the building will be available to recognise gifts from individuals, foundations and corporates.

Background To Fundraising As one of England’s first medical charities, the RCP has a long history of philanthropic support. Since its founding the College has received the support of leading charitable foundations, members of the college, and philanthropists. However, despite this history of philanthropy, the RCP has not had a permanent centralised and professional fundraising function in its history. The RCP’s core sources of income are membership fees, exam fees, venue hire and contracted programmes funded by grants. While sustained philanthropic and corporate fundraising is a new area for the RCP, the College has nonetheless received some truly transformational gifts in the past. These include a gift of £450,000 from the Wolfson Foundation in 1963 (worth over £8m in current value) to build its Grade 1 headquarters in Regents Park. In 2002, a gift of £2m was received from the Jerwood Foundation to build the Jerwood Medical Centre. Numerous prizes, awards, and other programmes are funded by historic gifts received from members of the RCP, their families, and other philanthropic people and organisations. The awards programme is managed by the Fundraising & Awards Officer.
The RCP has now engaged leading fundraising consultants More Partnership to guide the key startup phase. Craig Pollard is acting as Interim Director of Development in the period up to the permanent Director of Development joining the RCP. Craig is driving forward a focused programme to explore and validate the fundraising potential of the RCP from high value donors in relation to the four fundraising priorities. In addition, Liam Fisher Jones is providing strategic advice and leading on our ambitious Physicians for Africa programme in Africa. Both bring great depth of experience to shape the development programme and ensure a successful transition into a permanent appointment and their insight will ensure

The initial focus for this work is on securing sponsorship for the RCP Medical Conference programme and establishing the principles of a corporate partnership programme. This work is currently being led by the Head of Strategic Marketing and Corporate Partnerships. The Director of Development will have the opportunity to work with these leading external advisers to bring these two strong pipelines of activity together to maximise returns.

Background To Fundraising Fundraising Priorities An internal consultation exercise was carried out in early 2017 to determine what the RCP’s fundraising priorities should be to meet strategic objectives and to form an attractive shop window for fundraising communications. The main focus of the Development Office will be RCP North where the objective is to raise the final 20% of funding needed to complete the £35m RCP North in Liverpool in advance of its projected opening in 2020.
