Director of Development St Benet’s Hall Candidate Information Pack
Letter from the Master Dear Candidate, Thank you for your interest in St Benet’s Hall. St Benet’s is a Permanent Private Hall in the University of Oxford and one of the now 44 constituent colleges of the University. Founded by the Benedictine Abbey at Ampleforth in 1897, the Hall continues its Benedictine Roman Catholic ethos with a small monastic community at its centre. However, students and staff come from a variety of religious and nonreligious backgrounds. Faithful to the monastic ideal and to the University’s educational origin and vision, the Master, students, monks, staff, tutors, fellows, and guests all sit around one table and enjoy the same food. Together we form a vibrant, diverse and international community. Our intellectual and community profile also attracts an ever increasing number of visiting academics from around the world. My wife Betty and I have greatly enjoyed our so far five years at St Benet’s Hall. A lot has changed since our arrival, including the transition to a fully co-educational and more diverse student body, the increase in the number of graduate students, the acquisition of a new and important second building at 11 Norham Gardens in addition to our main site at 38 St Giles in central Oxford, the appointment of a professional bursar etc. We are proud to witness that all of these changes have been welcomed by the entire membership of the Hall and supported by its alumni. Our continuing development requires a strong financial base. That is the only way to guarantee the best teaching and research and to make sure that we have the

brightest students. The post of Development Director, therefore, matters hugely to the Hall, and he or she will be vital to our future success. I hope you get a chance to experience what a unique and exciting place this is, and I wish you luck with your application. Werner G Jeanrond Master of St Benet’s Hall

Introduction Benedictine monks have a long history at Oxford, going right back to the beginnings of the University. St Benet’s Hall itself was founded in 1897, and granted a license to matriculate students in the University of Oxford in 1918. The Hall is owned by Ampleforth Abbey Trust and governed by the St Benet’s Trust. Currently 84 female and male students study for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in humanities and social science subjects: Classics; History; Oriental Studies; Theology; Philosophy, Politics and Economics; Archaeology; Egyptology; Masters in Copyright © 2016 Roo Waters All Rights Reserved

of St Benet’s Hall, commenting: “Oxford needs St Benet’s”. Moreover, St Benet’s has a mandate from the University to promote Oxford in the maintained sector, particularly amongst Catholic schools. This has resulted in a diversification of the Hall’s student population and more students selecting St Benet’s Hall as their first choice of place to study. The first key step in this development was the appointment, in 2012, of St Benet’s Hall’s first lay master: Professor Werner G Jeanrond, an acclaimed Catholic academic. Under the leadership of Professor Jeanrond, St Benet’s has not only diversified the student population but has also reviewed the subjects that are taught and has improved academic attainment, Copyright © 2016 Andrew P Waters All Rights Reserved

Governance at St Benet’s Hall St Benet’s Hall is a Permanent Private Hall in the University of Oxford, owned by Ampleforth Abbey and governed through the St Benet’s Trust, which is a subsidiary trust to the Ampleforth Abbey Trust. The St Benet’s Trust holds the licence issued by the University of Oxford, which enables the work of St Benet’s Hall as an academic institution of research and teaching in the University. The University has established a Supervisory Committee for its six Permanent Private Halls, including St Benet’s Hall. St Benet’s Hall is thus intimately involved with the work and mission of both Ampleforth Abbey and the University of Oxford. The existence of both these stakeholders is appropriately reflected on the Board

matters of development and fundraising. A special Board of Regents, that includes monks of the Abbey, the Master and the Development Office of the Hall, as well as suitable alumni and friends of the Hall, is concerned with the strategic and fundraising dimensions of the development work in St Benet’s. In these various areas, the Hall can draw upon the advice and resources available in the wider Ampleforth governance structure. St Benet’s Hall wishes to promote a mutually enriching climate of co-operation with both Ampleforth Abbey and the University of Oxford. The Trustees, the Master, the Senior Tutor, the Fellows, the JCR, and the administrative staff of the Hall are all committed to deepening the relationship of the Hall with the members and employees of the Abbey and of the University. Regular communication and frequent visits between the members of the Abbey and the Hall are necessary for the successful co-operation between

The History of Development at St Benet’s Hall St Benet’s Hall has a valued and committed alumni base. St Benet’s recognises the importance of philanthropic support if it is to realise its mission. A recent report by More Partnership, of the philanthropic potential of St Benet’s Hall has been the catalyst to invest in fundraising. Moss Cooper, the report’s author, was pleasantly surprised at the level of support and enthusiasm for St Benet’s Hall. The report, available to candidates, asserts that with the correct investment in fundraising resources, St Benet’s Hall is an attractive proposition for potential funders. St Benet’s Hall is coming to the end of a capital campaign which until recently relied upon external expertise. The campaign is now being led by Ampleforth’s Director of Development with a view to its completion in the next few months.

We have an opportunity to seek support from an alumni base which, compared to many other Oxford colleges, is not as large or as developed. In addition, there are many Ampleforth alumnus who value the work of St Benet’s Hall. Moreover, recent research

now that it is ready to invest in appointing a permanent Director of Development, a post not previously seriously invested in at St Benet’s Hall.
The Director of Development for St Benet’s Hall will have the support of the enigmatic Master, his senior team, the Master’s PA who spends 50% of her time stewarding alumni including developing and delivering alumni events. Importantly, the Director of Development will be given strategic and technical support from Ampleforth’s Director of Development and her team which includes a researcher and Development Manager. It is anticipated as the St Benet’s Hall fundraising strategy is developed and demonstrates success, then appropriate investment would be appropriate. Importantly St Benet’s Hall has a Board of Regents chaired by Katushka Giltsoff. The Regents are committed to supporting the work of St Benet’s Hall through their expertise and networks. It will be important for this new post-holder to educate the Master and his staff in the technical aspects of fundraising and what is achievable. A focussed approach will be required to maximise potential and ensure that our fundraising needs are realistic and achievable.
