Summary of the Role’s Main Purpose: To develop and lead on the delivery of the High Value Legacy strategy that supports our vision of building firstclass long term relationships with Philanthropists, High Net Worth Individuals and Intermediaries. With an audience led approach you will lead a small team and develop exemplar matrix working across the Philanthropy and Partnerships (P&P) directorate to bring together all elements of the end-to-end supporter journey for these key audiences - driving us to achieve our ambitious and stretching income targets of over £180m per year. ✓ Responsible for: relationship management/stewardship; shaping and developing CRUK's High Value Legacy strategy and the relationship/ways of working with the Philanthropy & Partnership (P&P) directorate ✓ Budget responsibilities of up to £0.5m expenditure; building a high value legacy pledge pipeline of £180m over 5 years. With a requirement to support departmental objective to increase contribution significantly over the next 5 years. ✓ As part of the senior Legacies leadership team and P&P leadership team contribute to the continued development and delivery of the Legacies and P&P strategy
Key Responsibilities:
Strategy, Planning and Delivery: ✓ Establish and optimise the long-term vision and 5 year plan for High Value Legacies, in collaboration with the P&P Leadership Team and Legacy Leadership team ✓ Working closely with the Legacies Head of Planning and Development to scope out how we might deliver products and propositions that service HNW and their advisors (including creative development) ✓ With key stakeholders in Legacies and P&P, produce and deliver a comprehensive annual operations plan that delivers in year priorities in relation to the strategy and 5 year plan ✓ Contribute to the development of the over-arching Legacies and P&P Strategy and work with peers to deliver this ✓ Work as a key member of the Fundraising and Marketing (F&M) leadership team to drive forward the F&M strategy
Relationship management
Manage the Planned Giving Pipeline (this is shadow canvassing, canvassing and co-canvassing) ✓ Solicit and steward high value legacy prospects working with P&P and wider Legacy department to ensure there is no duplication in approaches to these individuals and a united CRUK relationship is always presented ✓ Develop and maintain strong relationships with Legacy Pledgers and their intermediaries being audience led in the ‘ownership & approach’ to these relationships ✓ Work regularly with P&P and the Legacy Supporter Engagement team to identify legacy prospects on their pipeline, working closely with them to build legacy relationships and journeys (as appropriate) ✓ Maximise stewardship and cultivation opportunities to ensure seamless supporter journey and drive efficiencies ✓ Maximise high value professional relationships (i.e. Legal Professionals, Wealth Managers etc.) to grow high value legacies, working closely with P&P and the Head of Professional Partnerships to ensure we present a united CRUK relationship with these individuals/companies. Leadership and Line Management: ✓ Effectively manage, develop and support the team to achieve great results ✓ Drive a culture of empowerment and success across the Legacies team, as well as one of collaboration with other parts of P&P, F&M, R&I and the wider organisation ✓ Represent Cancer Research UK at the appropriate external conferences, forums and groups to raise awareness of High Value Legacy Giving and deliver larger gifts ✓ Through all activity, maintain and build upon Cancer Research UKs excellent reputation with external partners and supporters. ✓ Be a visible and active member of the CRUK leadership team Financial ✓ Work with each member of the Legacies leadership team and Business Analysis to deliver the income, expenditure, contribution budgets and pledge pipeline - look to maximise cost efficiencies. ✓ Establish and manage effective systems that evaluate performance of the team in relation to monthly income/expenditure/contribution against budget as well as other agreed KPIs; report on variances and implement appropriate contingency plans to ensure targets and KPI’s are achieved. ✓ Build and develop strong relationships and work in collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders involved with Legacy Giving and Philanthropy. ✓ Carry out budget forecasting when required.
Key Technical Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours ✓ Passion for the cause ✓ Excellent relationship and influencing skills with supporters, demonstrating gravitas and being professional but warm ✓ Strong stakeholder engagement and management skills, with the ability to quickly get buy in and work collaboratively ✓ Experience of, or understanding of how to, work with ultra-high net worth/ HNW supporters ✓ Knowledge of ethical and legal considerations around legacy giving ✓ Ability to work successfully in a matrix environment / large organisation ✓ Strong understanding of how Legacies and complex gifts work (trusts, funds, other complex financial processes) ✓ Strategic thinking; making future focussed, well informed decisions and articulating these clearly ✓ Experience of managing complex budgets ✓ A track record of achieving financial targets and delivering significant income growth ✓ Capable of implementing and managing change in a dynamic and diverse organisation ✓ An empowering, positive and motivational leadership style ✓ A willingness and ability to travel across the UK
