KING’S HEALTH PARTNERS
LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF MAJOR GIFTS, KING’S HEALTH PARTNERS & KCL HEALTH Thank you for your interest in the position of Senior Major Gifts Fundraiser, Haematology at King’s College London and King’ Health Partners. Are you an inspired fundraiser who has the determination, passion and ability to advance an ambitious philanthropic agenda? Are you willing to have a major impact on clinical research and patient care? Do you want to join the global fight against blood disease? If you answered yes then I invite you to join the team that has led the hugely successful World Questions | King’s answers fundraising campaign, raising over £600 million against a target of £500 million. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our patients, alumni and friends in the UK and around the globe we have
positively changed the lives of millions of people. We are now developing our next philanthropic campaign, which will continue to address some of the most significant global challenges, from improving mental health to developing new drug discoveries in cancer and blood disorders. Blood cancers (leukaemias) and red blood cell disorders (such as sickle cell disease & haemophilia) can have devastating impact on lives, including premature death. KHP Haematology is home to some of the world’s leading experts in leukaemia and sickle cell disease and our academics have shaped medical history in the field of Haematology: Professor Ghulam Mufti performed the UK’s first bone marrow transplant in 1986; our Cell Therapy Unit, led by Professor Farzin Farzaneh, offers one of the most advanced GMP Cell Production facilities in Europe; and Professor Eric So has led gamechanging discoveries in the search

HAEMATOLOGY – STOPPING DISEASES OF THE BLOOD Blood cancers (leukaemias) and red blood cell disorders (such as sickle cell disease & haemophilia) can have devastating impact on lives, including premature death. The KHP Institute for Haematology aims to redefine the global fight against blood disease by developing new treatments and cures that will change the lives of millions in South East London, the UK and globally.
LEUKAEMIA THE PROBLEM: The greatest tragedy of leukaemia is the relapse rate. 75% of those who initially survive go on to die within five years, having developed resistance to treatment. Whilst childhood leukaemia has become highly treatable, the disease has become increasingly common in individuals who are 60+ years of age, a group that are considerably more

To generate a vaccine The KHP Institute for Haematology is seeking answers to the following questions: In which cells do abnormalities arise? Can the immune system be supported to defeat leukaemia? Are some people born with the ability to better attack cancer cells as they arise and therefore never develop the clinical manifestations of the disease? Within five years, we aim to deliver a precision medicine treatment where knowledge of cell abnormalities, immune response and DNA repair can help to identify the best combination of therapies for each individual patient.
chemotherapy patients who are not suitable for a bone marrow transplant. The vaccine will stimulate patients’ immune systems to react and destroy leukaemic cells, thus reducing the risk of relapse within a human’s natural lifespan and increasing survival rates.

HAEMATOLOGY – STOPPING DISEASES OF THE BLOOD SICKLE CELL DISEASE (SCD) THE PROBLEM: The scale and impact is staggering. 40% of people in some areas of sub-Saharan Africa, eastern Saudi Arabia, and central India have sickle cell disease. In countries with limited resources more than 90% of children with the SCD gene will not live to adulthood. Sickle cell disease is chronic by nature and can be exceptionally difficult to live with, particularly in some countries where patients do not have access to the right treatments. Patients with the disorder experience recurrent pain via severe attacks, known as sickle cell ‘crises’, significantly affecting their quality of life and mental wellbeing. Whilst 99% of patients with sickle cell disease in the UK survive, many lead a poor quality of life due to the limited
THE RESPONSE: To eliminate the burden of sickle cell disease, and enable those who do suffer to live well. The KHP Institute for Haematology will find new cures through high impact research and clinical trials. It will develop genome editing as a therapy to treat sickle cell disease and will significantly enhance bed space for bone marrow transplant patients. Clinical practice at home and abroad will be improved through the establishment of the UK’s first ever national centre for SCD, bringing together crisis treatment and chronic issue management with prenatal diagnosis and mind & body care. It will deliver robust training for countries that have high prevalence rates, ensuring delivery of more affordable treatments and care on the ground.
A STATE-OF-THE-ART NEW CLINICAL-ACADEMIC HOSPITAL BUILDING Currently, haematology services take place on multiple sites. The KHP Institute for Haematology seeks to change this by bringing research groups and service teams together on one site to facilitate greater collaboration between disciplines and sharing access to core facilities. VICKI SLOAN, HEAD OF MAJOR GIFTS, INTERNATIONAL “I joined the team as a Senior Major Gifts Manager three years ago, after working in the charity sector in organisations such as Shelter and Book Trust. I came to here to learn, and I haven’t been disappointed. I’ve had the chance to work on the biggest gifts of my career and build my international experience, something that is hard to gain at many other organisations. F&SD has supported me to gain experience in the US around specific projects, which has led me to take on the maternity cover for the Head of Major Gifts, International – an amazing opportunity”.
