THE OPPORTUNITY Following donations of 7- and 8- figures in support of the relocation of the museum to High Street Kensington, and since
Celeste Bright’s arrival as Development
Director in 2016, it has been identified that there is great potential for establishing a Major Gifts strategy to engage high-net-
worth individuals, including those who are not donors elsewhere, with the Design Museum’s mission, vision and values.
This newly created role offers a successful and sophisticated major gifts fundraiser
a career-defining opportunity to establish high-level philanthropy at the Design
Museum for the first time. You will bring a professional and systematic approach to relationship building with both
internal stakeholders and prospective
donors. There is scope for creativity and entrepreneurial thinking in order to shape the strategy and priorities for developing
major gifts as a significant and sustainable income stream for the museum.

and beyond, you will bring experience of successfully matching prospects
with opportunities and securing gifts of
6-figures and more from individual donors. The Design Museum offers a
contemporary, open-plan workplace, with direct interaction with senior colleagues,
curators, trustees and advisors. If you are an ambitious fundraiser who thrives in a
collaborative environment, then this role is for you.
THE DESIGN MUSEUM The Design Museum is the world’s leading museum devoted to contemporary
design in every form from furniture to
graphics, and architecture to industrial
design. For the Design Museum, design is a continually evolving subject which it explores through its exhibitions
programme, permanent collection, learning and research activities. It is a way to
understand the world and how you can change it. The museum’s mission is to

established the forerunner of the Design
Museum, the Boilerhouse, in the basement of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. As planned, the Boilerhouse quickly outgrew the V&A and in 1989 it
moved on to become the Design Museum, in an architecturally striking transformation of a Thameside warehouse near Tower
Bridge. Since then it has emerged as an institution with international status and
significance, playing an important role in putting design and architecture on the cultural agenda.

DEVELOPMENT AT THE DESIGN MUSEUM This is an exciting time to join the
experienced and growing fundraising team at the Design Museum. Since opening
on 24 November 2016, the museum has welcomed more than one million visitors to its new premises on Kensington
High Street. Three times more space, much improved learning facilities and
a dedicated exhibition space in which to display the museum’s permanent
collection for free for the first time makes the Design Museum an international
showcase for the many creative design
skills at which Britain excels. The move
to Kensington has given the museum the opportunity to broaden its appeal and reach a wider audience.
The museum enjoys individual patronage from a number of donors via the Design
Circle, the vibrant patrons’ scheme which was launched in 2015 to significantly
increase support for the museum’s core programme of exhibitions and learning
activity. It is also fortunate to have the
support of a high calibre and dedicated
Board of Trustees and previous support from a range of donors for the recent capital campaign.
The challenge ahead is to secure the ongoing operational funding required
from major donors and high net worth
individuals to sustain the new museum as it embarks on its most ambitious plans to date.
Each year the Department raises between £3 million and £5 million from the private sector from a combination of individuals,
grant-making trusts and companies. This activity includes seeking sponsorship
for the Museum’s temporary exhibitions,
managing the museum’s relationship with
its major sponsors and other funders and running a corporate membership and an individual patrons programme.
The Head of Major Gifts will work closely with the Director of Development, the
Development team, the broader Museum directorate, colleagues and senior
volunteers to raise major gifts from
individual donors. This will be achieved
through initiating and developing long term relationships between supporters and the Design Museum.
The post-holder will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of the Development
strategy in particular cultivation and
stewardship events and individual donor and project strategies.
