DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
LETTER FROM FR STEPHEN EVANS, RECTOR OF ST MARYLEBONE Thank you for your interest in the newly created post of Development Director here at St Marylebone Parish Church. We have embarked on an ambitious redevelopment and conservation project, St Marylebone Changing Lives, and now look to welcome to our team an exceptional and inspiring fundraiser who can share our vision and help us to deliver a ÂŁ10 million Heritage Lottery Fund supported project. As a major parish church at the heart of central London we are a living and worshipping community of faith shaped by our historic engagements with music, art, community building, education, wholeness and healing. Changing Lives is our opportunity to honour our inheritance and to expand our mission and ministry to the increasingly diverse community in which we are set and which derives its name from the parish church.
As our newly appointed Development Director you will need to share our vision, be entrepreneurial and able to work as a key member of an already established team; you will also want to demonstrate your hands-on attitude to fundraising. This is a new but critical post within St Marylebone Parish Church and as our Development Director you will work closely with our Operations Director, the Parochial Church Council and me in helping to deliver the St Marylebone Changing Lives project as well as securing the parish church’s medium and long-term future. St Marylebone is a challenging but exciting place to work and I look forward to reading your application. The Revd Canon Dr Stephen Evans Rector of St Marylebone

It is a hospitable venue for education and cultural events of national and international significance. In all these things, the parish church aims to achieve the highest standards of welcome, service and delivery. A team of more than 20 staff work for St Marylebone Parish Church. There is a flourishing Young Church at St Marylebone, which complements the work of its two schools: The St Marylebone Church of England School, an Outstanding Academy, National Teaching School and Maths Hub, and The St Marylebone Church of England Bridge School, a Free Special School which works with secondary school age students who have speech, language and communication difficulties. Alongside these two schools, the parish church has strong ties to the Royal Academy of Music, the University of Westminster and Regent’s University.
St Marylebone Parish Church has embarked on a transformative project, the St Marylebone Changing Lives project, funded partly by the HLF. This project will involve the delivery of a heritage programme working with local communities, businesses and stakeholders. It will tell the story of St Marylebone and the larger Marylebone community through the visual arts, multi-media forms and heritage crafts. Key partners include the University of Westminster, The Fourth Feathers Youth & Community Project, Westminster Archives and the Building Crafts College. Replacing the failed roof, carrying out extensive conservation repairs and telling the Marylebone story will all be part of the Changing Lives project.
THE JOB IN CONTEXT St Marylebone Parochial Church Council (PCC) has successfully achieved a Round One ‘pass’ from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a £10m project to replace the roof and to develop the parish church as an exciting heritage and cultural venue. The new Development Director will lead the fundraising campaign to raise £4m to support the Changing Lives project. As part of the Senior Management Team, working with the Rector, Operations Director and Parochial Church Council, the Development Director will plan and implement the fundraising strategy.
The post-holder will create and lead the delivery of the fundraising strategy to raise both the capital required for completion of the project as well as the revenue funding required to support the Incumbent and PCC’s future program of activities. S/he will bring demonstrable fundraising skills and experience and a proven track record of initiating and securing major gifts in at least five figure sums. The Development Director will be flexible and entrepreneurial and excited by the opportunity to help shape the future of St Marylebone Parish Church. S/he will have creative and innovative ideas about how to attract support from a wide range of donors from local residents and heritage supporters to prospects who will be inspired to support St Marylebone’s community activities. The funders will include public, private, corporate and individual donors, as well as trusts, foundations and businesses. The Development Director will identify the resources needed for delivery of the fundraising strategy. Whilst the focus of the Development Director will

be to secure six- and seven-figure gifts, s/he will also shape a team around research capacity, office administration, communications and excellent stewardship. The Director will develop a team, budget permitting, to deliver on the new fundraising strategy. There is currently a Trusts and Foundations Manager, and support from the Activities’ Coordinator and the Finance Officer could be called upon, if and when required. A Development Board is currently being recruited, and research into this area is being undertaken by The Halpin Partnership, who are doing a feasibility study on potential Donors. The new Development Director will play a role in helping to form and shape the new Development Board, with particular
attention to recruiting a Chair who will lead, motivate, energise, and inspire fellow Board members. The Development Director will advise on the requirements for fundraising software and manage and oversee its use. The role will also analyse and report on data and participate in the design and execution of special events. S/he will maintain an active donor program to assure accountability and extend relationships with funders. The Development Director will facilitate the Incumbent and PCC’s identification, cultivation and solicitation of prospects and help the Incumbent and PCC reach its fundraising goals. The successful candidate will report directly to the Rector and interface with members of the PCC on fundraising matters.
