JOB DESCRIPTION STRATEGIC PLANNING, POLICY DEVELOPMENT AND CONSULTANCY •

Lead the strategic planning and delivery for Global & Transformational Philanthropy, working collaboratively with the Deputy Director, Development. Ensure effective strategic objectives and operational plans are in place to deliver philanthropic and engagement outputs and outcomes.

Actively monitor global trends in philanthropy and investment; explore and develop new models of philanthropy suitable to attract gifts of over £1 million; monitor philanthropy and economic changes globally, adapting strategy accordingly to ensure long term growth in philanthropic income.

Exercising a high level of independent judgment, serve as a specialist, expert fundraising professional in the area of transformational philanthropy (gifts above £1 million) and global philanthropy (gifts from donors outside the UK), leading strategies that include complex gift discussions and interaction with donors capable of making significant contributions; provide high level support and consultancy to the University Senior Leadership team and colleagues across the University as ‘resident expert’ on Global & Transformational Philanthropy.

Provide the Director and University senior leadership team with high quality business and management information, ensuring that management information on progress in global and transformational giving is regularly analysed and reported on in an accurate, efficient and timely manner, with clear action-planning taking place in response to management information.

Ensure the fundraising programme is informed and improved by continuous learning from data analysis, external benchmarking tools such as the Ross-CASE Survey and other global fundraising surveys and analytical reports.

Represent the University nationally and internationally, including but not exclusively through the Council for the Advancement of Education (CASE), ensuring external recognition for the University in the area of Global & Transformational Philanthropy, to support the profession as a whole, but also to keep abreast of new innovations and best practice and to use this insight in strategic planning and implementation.

Develop and manage strategic mutually beneficial relationships with wealth managers in the UK and globally.

Develop and monitor a framework for global and transformational philanthropic opportunities across the University, including scholarships and access provision, academic posts and research programmes, to ensure strategic alignment, legal compliance and consistency in gift levels, and to create innovative new philanthropic programmes in response to key University priorities and emerging opportunities, working with the Senior Leadership Team, key academic and Professional Services colleagues across the University to ensure robust design, agreement and implementation.

Develop, agree and implement University-wide policies for naming rights associated with benefactions, for endowment giving and for ensuring gift accounting is conducted in line with current Statement of Recommended Practice, working in conjunction with colleagues in Finance where appropriate.

Support the Director of Development in the strategic management of the University’s development boards (currently Global Ledership Board (GLB), North American Foundation ( NAFUM ) and Hong Kong Foundation (HKFUM)) and play a key role in developing highly strategic relationships between the University and existing and future board members/key volunteers, helping identify, recruit and steward new board members, trustees and volunteers.

JOB DESCRIPTION TRANSFORMATIONAL PHILANTHROPY (TP)

GLOBAL PHILANTHROPY

Develop and deliver a University-wide strategy and framework for international philanthropy, assessing and benchmarking performance in global philanthropy and identifying opportunities for growth.

Work collaboratively with the Deputy President, Associate Vice President for Internationalisation and senior Professional Services colleagues to identify and shape strategic philanthropic priorities which will attract non-UK donors.

Demonstrate keen awareness of cultural differences globally and develop appropriate strategies for international markets.

Oversee all philanthropic activity outside the UK, representing DDAR on University strategy groups for different priority regions and deputise for the Director when required at the University’s Internationalisation Strategy group meetings, ensuring that DDAR activities are aligned to the University’s internationalisation agenda.

Develop, lead and implement the TP strategy focussing on increasing the number of seven- and eight-figure gifts from alumni, non-alumni, charitable trusts and organisations.

Write and oversee complex and compelling proposals for individual and trust and foundation prospects in consultation with the Head of TP, DDAR and academic colleagues.

Work directly with the President and Vice Chancellor on engagement, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for all TP level donors and potential donors, including leading quarterly reviews of relationships and progress.

Lead the philanthropic strategy for capital projects, working directly with the Director of Estates to report on progress and identify and agree new philanthropic opportunities.

Lead strategic bids for the University when required, such as the ‘UK Research Partnership Investment Fund’ bids.

JOB DESCRIPTION BUDGET AND INCOME GENERATION •

Responsible for, and lead the strategy for, a major strategic income stream for the University, achieving agreed £multi-million fundraising targets working within an agreed expenditure budget.

Working closely with finance, ensure seven- and eight-figure endowment gifts are effectively managed and stewarded, and explore opportunities to grow endowment giving at the University.

Personally develop and manage a portfolio of prospective/current TP level donors (£1 million plus); to identify areas of shared interests, and to develop pathways of interest, participation and involvement that lead to seven- and eight-figure philanthropic gifts for the University.

Work directly with Director of Business Engagement to maximise relationships, explore and shape new models of philanthropy and identify opportunities for income growth.

Work closely with the Head of TP and the wider development team to ensure there are appropriate and effective strategies for all TP level potential donors and donors in their pools, leading to a successful and sustainable TP programme, ensuring annual targets are being met.
