INNOVATING SINCE 1843 Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is a modern and forward-looking institution that makes an important contribution to the social, cultural, and economic wellbeing of the city, county and wider region. We have a long and proud history of being an active member of the community, and our roots trace back to the Nottingham Government School of Design, which was established in 1843 and helped drive innovation and skills to ensure the prosperity of the textiles

industry across the region. Today, the University boosts the UK economy by more than ÂŁ900 million a year and generates 10,500 jobs. We support our students to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to play the positive role in society that they choose for themselves. A quarter of our students come from low-income families. At the same time, NTU has one of the strongest graduate employment records of any university in the UK. Furthermore, we work with approximately 30,000 schoolchildren every year, and those who take part in our outreach programmes are twice as likely to apply to and succeed at university. The combination of academic depth, vocational relevance, close links with employers, and sector-leading teaching and learning innovations, enable the University to equip our students with the capabilities they need to thrive. For employers, it means an expansion of the talent pool. For society, it leads to enhanced community cohesion. All of this sets the University and our students apart.

Our exceptional teaching is underpinned by world-class research and excellent scholarship. The University hosts a range of internationally renowned and worldleading research groups across our eight schools. The innovative, practical solutions we have provided to major societal

challenges have had an enduring impact on people’s lives, both in the UK and across the globe. These include breakthroughs in 3D X-ray imaging and airport security, identifying new methods to treat some of the most widespread types of cancer, and pioneering work in the management of natural water resources.

CREATING THE UNIVERSITY OF THE FUTURE AND NTU2025 However, the university of the future does more than just educate students. It plays a vital role in the economic, cultural, and social sustainability of its city and region. While we are proud of our achievements, we know we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. Over the coming years, we anticipate significant shifts in students’ and employers’ expectations, and the skills and knowledge that young people will need to thrive in tomorrow’s world. Our new strategy NTU2025, to launch in the academic 2019/2020, seeks to re-define what it means to be an elite university in the 21st Century.

Candidate Information Pack | Head of Development Operations & Insight, Nottingham Trent University

REALISING OUR VISION To date, philanthropy has played a key role in helping the University connect employers’ needs and students’ aspirations, with NTU securing more than £23 million for the twelve years 2006 – 2018. We are now entering the next phase of our development, and private support will play an increasingly important part in our funding mix. We have recently launched the first phase of a major strategic fundraising campaign, which will unfold over the next five to seven years, and will allow us to strengthen our impact, and mobilise our community of more than 200,000 alumni, friends, corporate and foundation partners.

DEVELOPMENT & ALUMNI RELATIONS AT NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY Since the appointment of Professor Edward Peck as Vice-Chancellor in August 2014, the University has developed and launched an institutional strategy that embraces the opportunities and addresses the challenges presented by the new environment for higher education. The University has invested more than ÂŁ25 million in the delivery of this strategy, and is currently preparing to launch its new strategic plan NTU2025, which will continue to place a strong emphasis on ensuring we can attract and retain exceptional talent at all levels to drive forward our progress.

Our institutional plans also call for a step-change in our fundraising and alumni and supporter relations. Following a review of our external engagement in 2016, the University Executive Team approved additional investment in strengthening the Development and Alumni Relations team. Magdalena Douleva was appointed Director of Development and Alumni Relations in late 2016, to lead an ambitious programme that will match the aspirations of the University. Magdalena brings extensive strategic fundraising and constituency relations experience from a breadth of institutions and organisations worldwide, including University College Dublin, Rotterdam School of Management, American University in Cairo, and Christian Aid. In 2018, NTU successfully recruited two new senior leadership roles within DAR: Head of Philanthropy and Head of Alumni Relations and Regular Giving.

The University is now launching a recruitment campaign to appoint a third senior leadership position within DAR: Head of Development Operations & Insight. All three positions play an integral part in developing and implementing the new DARO strategy, and have an opportunity to shape the respective programmes in the context of increased visibility within the University and a supportive leadership team.

The Head of Development Operations & Insight will set and lead the delivery of DAR’s constituent information and management strategy, providing critical support to the fundraising and alumni relations teams, and working closely with colleagues in the University on key institutional priorities such as the Graduate Outcomes survey. S/he will be keen to share in the collective responsibility for the overall leadership of DAR. Continues on next page

CITY OF NOTTINGHAM Nottingham is a dynamic and cosmopolitan city in the heart of England and home to around 750,000 people. If you are already based in the East Midlands, you will know about the fantastic lifestyle Nottingham offers its inhabitants. Combining a bustling city and a glorious countryside, this spectacular region boasts a £12.1 billion economy that has been steadily growing over the last ten years. As the East Midlands’ premier commercial, retail, financial and business centre, Nottingham plays a distinctive role in the UK’s national and regional economic growth, and can offer a London standard of living. The city is rapidly developing and benefitting from major regeneration projects, in which the University is playing a vital part, with £1 billion currently being spent on making the transport and business infrastructure truly world-class. Nottingham’s central location, vibrant social life, cultural gems and stunning countryside – all at affordable prices – make it one of the most desirable places in the country to live and work.

Nottingham’s cultural life is further enhanced by a diverse array of new events and activities celebrating its rich heritage, including the legacy of former Nottingham residents and literary giants Lord Byron, D H Lawrence and Alan Sillitoe. Getting around Nottingham could not be simpler, with a compact city centre, a tram system and pedestrianised streets that are easy to navigate. From the UK’s oldest tavern to a host of restaurants including Michelin-starred Sat Bains, there is something for every taste. If shopping is your passion, then you are in for a treat as retail options have seen Nottingham ranked 5th in the UK for the quality of our retail experience. For those who prefer sport, you would not be short of choice. Home to two football clubs, the world-famous Trent Bridge cricket ground, plus the National Water Sports Centre and many country parks, Nottingham is as varied as it is lively. Unsurprisingly, many of our students and staff play for their local sports clubs, while many more enjoy the natural landscapes of Sherwood Forest Continues on next page

CITY OF NOTTINGHAM (made famous by the legend of Robin Hood), or the beautiful Peak District, both just a short drive away.

Nottingham punches above its weight when it comes to culture as well. Locals and visitors can enjoy the city’s flourishing arts scene, including visual arts, music, theatre, cinema, literature and entertainment. For a true Nottingham experience, step into one of our cultural institutions – the Nottingham Playhouse, the New Art Exchange, the Royal Concert Hall, Theatre Royal, or Nottingham Contemporary, dip into one of the museums, or explore the network of caves that run underneath the city.

With living expenses being around 5% to 7% lower than the UK average, you will find your income goes that little bit further in Nottingham. Whether you are looking to buy or rent, property across the city stretches from airy loft conversions in the city’s historic Lace Market, to modern riverside apartments. For a family-friendly area, West Bridgford, Mapperley or Beeston, or perhaps one of the gothic Victorian mansions in the Park Estate might suit your needs.

These are some of the reasons the city is home to major UK companies and to one of Europe’s largest life science business incubators with over 200 businesses employing more than 600 people in cutting-edge industries of advanced biopharma and medical technologies. With Liverpool and Manchester on your doorstep, there is no more convenient place in the country to call home. Efficient rail links will take you to a multitude of UK destinations, while the East Midlands airport means that you can be in any European city within a couple of hours.

Candidate Information Pack | Head of Development Operations & Insight, Nottingham Trent University

Nottingham is also a young city with two world-class universities and 60,000 students. More than half (54%) of the population in Nottingham hold a degree-level qualification, and 59% of the jobs in Nottingham are in Knowledge Intensive Industries, significantly above the UK average.

At Nottingham Trent, we want our people to enjoy a good work-life balance and to thrive, which is why the University is confident that you will find what you are looking for in Nottingham.
