Introduction from the XXXX Director of Fundraising XXXX
Thank you for your interest in our role of Director of Philanthropy at the British Heart Foundation (BHF). It is my privilege to lead the Fundraising directorate for the nation’s number one heart charity. BHF is strong, highly effective and well respected nationally and internationally. Our work saves lives – tens of thousands in the UK each year alone – and enhances the lives of many more. We have a big job on our hands - beating heartbreak from the world’s biggest killers.
Leading the Philanthropy team you’ll develop and implement strategies which will exponentially grow our income and support from high net worth individuals and trusts. We’re looking for an exceptional individual to work closely with our Board of Trustees, Directors, researchers, senior teams and volunteers across the BHF. With us you will build exciting, donor-centred propositions and opportunities for potential supporters, be they individuals, trusts or foundations.
As Director of Philanthropy you’ll build the BHF’s capacity and capability to deliver philanthropic giving, leading and driving strategies and activities to achieve transformational gifts in support of our world leading research and healthcare activities.
Your track record of past success in building and maintaining long-term relationships with high net worth constituents will be key, but your past successes won’t be enough; this role will need breadth of vision, strategic insight and analysis, determination to succeed and clear senior leadership and collaboration in a complex, challenging setting that engages staff and supporters right across the BHF. We want an exceptional colleague who exemplifies and champions our values and behaviours; brave, informed, compassionate and driven.
We’re committed to building and maintaining a sector leading Philanthropy team to support our world class scientific research; the team is a vital part of achieving our vision of a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory disease.
It’s an incredibly exciting time to be part of our fundraising team. We are more ambitious and determined than ever - because the cures and treatments we need are in sight. You could be part of getting us there sooner, so thank you for your interest. The BHF is also proud that we are working towards being a truly diverse organisation. Our growing commitment to equality and diversity spans across our charity and we pride ourselves in being an inclusive employer who puts diversity at the heart of everything that we do. So, if you feel you have the skills and experience that we are looking for, and you share our determination to beat heartbreak forever, then we would be delighted to hear from you. XXXX the BHF About The BHF raises money to research cures and XXXX treatments to beat heartbreak from heart and circulatory diseases, stroke, vascular dementia and their risk factors like diabetes. These diseases can happen to anyone and everyone. By funding the research that will find cures and end the heartbreak they cause, the BHF hopes to realise its vision of a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory diseases. The BHF was founded in 1961 and is the leading independent funder of cardiovascular research in the UK with annual fundraising income in excess of £135 million (excluding retail), and an employee base of over 4,100, supported by a further 22,000 volunteers. The lifesaving work of the BHF is primarily advanced through long-term investment in medical research with an aspiration to invest £500 million in cardiovascular research over the next five years. Its pioneering research has helped to transform the lives of people living with heart and circulatory conditions.
However, the landscape of heart and circulatory disease is changing. More people survive a heart attack than ever before, and that combined with an ageing population means more people are now living with heart disease and need the BHF’s help. The BHF know research is the answer. And it needs to act now. Only through continuing to push the frontiers of knowledge and discovery, embracing the opportunities of this digital new world, and developing truly innovative solutions, will the charity be able to turn back the tide. By using research findings to drive change at a national, local and community level – influencing key decision-makers and involving people in their own health and care – BHF can stop more people developing heart and circulatory diseases in the future. It can make sure people with existing conditions and risk factors are detected early, and that everyone, regardless of their personal circumstances, has access to the treatment and care that they need.

Strategy to 2030 Over more than 50 years, the BHF’s research has helped to reduce heart and circulatory deaths by more than half. However, although it has made great strides in solving the problems of the past, new challenges are emerging that demand new approaches. As such, since Spring 2018, the BHF has been looking at re-defining its organisational strategy to guide its efforts until 2030 (its current strategy, though soon to be superseded, can be found HERE). The BHF is getting closer to finalising its strategy, but there is still work underway in finalising the wording, detail and presentation of this new strategy. The BHF is currently forming under the four areas below, where funding world-class research remains at the core of its mission. In order to keep funding that research, and ensuring it is translated into real-world impact, the charity will also need to focus on three other interconnected and mutually dependent areas that are critical to its success. 1. Fund research to save and improve lives. Funding world-class research is the core of the BHF’s mission. Its ambition is to invest at least £1bn in research between now and 2030. The charity believes that world-class research is at the heart of helping to Beat Heartbreak Forever. The BHF therefore intend to expand and enhance its research programme, accelerating discovery, and turning these discoveries into live-saving medical advances. 2. Work with patients and the public to improve health and care. The BHF is the nation’s heart charity. It advocates on behalf of people affected by heart and circulatory diseases. The BHF catalyses solutions as well as developing innovative products and services that meet people’s needs. The charity involves them in everything the BHF does. By 2030, it wants fewer people to develop heart and circulatory diseases, making sure those with existing conditions and risk factors are detected early, and ensuring everyone has access to the treatment and care they need, regardless of their personal circumstances.
3. Grow support and income. The burden of heart and circulatory diseases is growing, and only through investing more in the best research and innovation can the BHF turn back the tide. The urgency of the problem means that the BHF and others need to raise more money than ever before so it can keep breaking new ground. 4. Strive for excellence. The BHF is driven to be a leading organisation within and beyond the charity sector, making the most of every pound entrusted to it. The BHF is ever mindful that this can only be achieved through living its values of being brave, driven, compassionate and informed. http://annualreview.bhf.org.uk/

Background to the Role The BHF is the largest independent funder of cardiovascular research in the UK and one of the biggest in the world. It is working tirelessly to solve a global problem and research funded by the BHF has had world-wide impact for those affected by heart and circulatory diseases and their risk factors. The BHF will deliver an ambitious programme of activity to raise more money to power its life saving work. Its research and healthcare work depends entirely on the generosity of its supporters, and the heroic efforts of its volunteers and staff. The BHF believes that research is the key to its vision of a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory disease, but more funding is needed to achieve it. It needs to find new, reliable income streams that help it fund ever more life-saving research. By growing its ability to achieve transformational philanthropic gifts, the BHF can put more towards beating heartbreak forever. With over 180 members of staff in the Fundraising directorate, the BHF has recently reviewed its fundraising strategy, and its aim is to deliver an ambitious, world class, supporter-centric fundraising programme for the whole charity. The overall aim of the strategy is to significantly grow total net income over five years and establish the foundations for future success so that it can fund even more life-saving research.
The Opportunity The BHF is committed to building and maintaining a sector leading philanthropy team to support its vision of a world free from heart and circulatory disease. The Charity has recognised the potential for a significant upscale in its major philanthropic gifts programme, building up from a relatively nascent position. The role of Director of Philanthropy presents the opportunity to transform the BHF’s philanthropic goals, pushing the boundaries of major gift fundraising and embedding an inspiring vision for philanthropy across the charity. The BHF’s aim is to enable a stepchange in its major gift fundraising, which will be transformational in scale, and this role will play a critical part in the achievement of this. The post holder must be an experienced and successful senior major gift fundraiser and a proven leader of Philanthropy teams. The Director will support and lead the Philanthropy team at the BHF to develop and implement strategies to exponentially grow income and support from high net worth individuals and trusts. The successful candidate will be entrepreneurial and results-driven with outstanding communication and influencing skills and the presence, gravitas and intellect to operate effectively at all levels. S/he will be at ease working closely with senior teams across the BHF, including the Chief Executive, as well as prospects capable of giving up to £1 million. Reporting to the Director of Fundraising, the post holder will also work collaboratively with the Global Principal Gifts Director to maximise income opportunities for the BHF. If you want to play a pivotal part in making a significant impact on the advancement of world class scientific research into heart and circulatory disease, then this unique, career-defining opportunity is for you.
