XXXXX
WELCOME LETTER It was with great pleasure that I joined OnSide Youth Zones in January this year as part of the charity’s nationwide expansion, the growth of which is motivated by a passionate desire to bring twenty first century youth provision to young people in areas of disadvantage across the country. OnSide is a truly amazing charity and many things attracted me to join the team, but I wanted to share with you the two most important factors in the hope that they too will encourage you to want to hear more about us. The first attraction was the inspirational and aspirational nature of OnSide and what it seeks to achieve in society. For decades many young people have been neglected and they need our help, now more than ever before. You need only glance at the news to know that the current childhood crisis is real and well documented. Whether it’s a lack of ambition or qualifications, negative behaviour and attitudes,
gang or knife violence, young people need help to find a way out of their predicament. OnSide Youth Zones are designed to give young people somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to in their leisure time; occupying their bodies and minds with fun activities, learning new skills and socialising in a safe, positive way. No one in the country is doing what we are seeking to do, at the scale and pace that we wish to deliver. We are a fast moving charity that is focused on making dramatic, positive change for young pople. If, like I was, you are looking for an organisation with aspiration, focus and ambition then this is certainly the charity for you. The second factor that attracted me was the entrepreneurial spirit of OnSide which, amongst other things, enables high performance fundraising to flourish. All our philanthropic income derives from major donors – high net
worth individuals, trusts and foundations, and corporates. Our Trustees, many of them successful entrepreneurs in London and across the country, are actively involved in fundraising: they are donors as well as fundraisers working with the Fundraising team. The calibre and participation of the Trustees in our fundraising endeavours is impressive and enables each team member to hone their skills, stretching themselves and their experience in order to drive success. Fundraising for OnSide in this entrepreneurial environment provides excellent career development opportunities in a supportive and ambitious environment. Meeting Trustees, donors and friends of OnSide I come across so many people that attribute part of their success to the youth centres, sports clubs and arts programmes of their childhood. These experiences as children afforded them positive

relationship with adults who supported and believed in them, helping them to become rounded, engaged and motivated. We believe every young person has the right to such opportunities; somewhere safe and inspiring to go in their leisure time. Our priority is working with young people living in some of our most deprived communities who are most at risk of being excluded, becoming disaffected and getting left behind. If you would like to help us (an inspirational and entrepreneurial charity) meet our ambition of creating 100 Youth Zones across the country over the next generation I look forward to hearing from you. ONSIDE YOUTH ZONES OnSide Youth Zones is a pioneering charity with one simple aim – to build a network of state-of-the-art, 21st century youth facilities to give young people safe and inspiring places to spend time away from home and school. It dates back to 2006 when entrepreneur investor Bill Holroyd was approached to chair the board of Bolton Lads and Girls Club – a high quality, custom-built youth club driven by a powerful combination of public, private and voluntary sector support. Bill realised very quickly the potential of high-quality facilities like Bolton to deliver benefits to young people in towns and cities across the country, and it was this vision that inspired OnSide. OnSide Youth Zones are designed to give young people aged 8–19 years old (25 for those with a disability) somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to in their leisure time; occupying their bodies and minds with fun activities, learning new
skills and socialising in a safe, positive way. They are there for young people in deprived areas, where the alternative for many is spending their evenings on the streets or isolated in their bedrooms, surfing the internet. Young people need our help now more than ever before. Whether it’s a lack of ambition or qualifications, or negative behaviour and attitudes, the current childhood crisis is real and well documented. 81% of young people say that their local area offers little to do outside of school and 66% spend most of their leisure time in their bedrooms. 1 in 5 said they didn’t have an adult in their life who they could talk to, and who listens to and believes in them. That’s why OnSide exists with the ambitious aim to help young people grow into healthier, happier and more aspirational adults.
NETWORK VALUES EXCELLENCE We encourage ourselves and each other to be the best we can be through continuous learning and improvement, and a focus on finding solutions.
YOUNG PEOPLE FIRST Young people are at the heart of everything we do, inspiring and challenging us to deliver services that exceed their needs and challenge them to be the best they can be.

RESPECT We act with honesty and integrity, celebrating diversity across the whole organisation and caring about each other, our young people and the Youth Zone environment.
AMBITIOUS COLLABORATIVE We will create and nurture strong, creative partnerships, working together to achieve better results and outcomes for young people.
We are passionate and driven in taking on new challenges, embracing new ideas, and exceeding our ambitions for young people, the Youth Zones and our local communities.

ONSIDE YOUTH ZONES SOMEWHERE TO GO
SOMEONE TO TALK TO
More than 40,000 members make around 500,000 visits to Youth Zones every year, attracting young people from the most disadvantaged communities. Young people are often prepared to travel up to one hour on public transport to get to their nearest Youth Zone particularly from the most disadvantaged communities. The iconic, inspiring buildings house high quality services and facilities open to all young people, in neutral spaces away from gang pressures or ‘postcode wars’. They are a safe, non-threatening environment to spend time with friends, enjoy a nutritious hot meal, take part in group activities and learn from adult role models. To young people, a Youth Zone is something truly their own. It is their place to escape the pressures of normal life and focus on their own development.
Youth Zones are a place where young people can engage with youth workers on their own terms – away from the pressures of school and family. Through one-to-one sessions and targeted programmes, youth workers help young people to look after their mental health, develop the skills they need for the future – from communications to employability – and much more.
Through its unique combination of public and private support and the sheer scale of private sector and individual partners, OnSide has seen a rapid expansion in Youth Zones, with 13 operational and many more in development. Over 500 local and national businesses, philanthropists, charitable foundations and local authorities have contributed more than £100 million for Youth Zones since 2008.
SOMETHING TO DO Youth Zones are packed with inspiring group and individual activities, overseen and supported by paid experts and an ‘army’ of volunteers. The unique buildings make the possibilities endless – Youth Zones can host almost any activity young people want to take part in, including inter-Youth Zone events where young people have the opportunity to travel, meet and compete with others, and residential trips which boost confidence and broaden horizons.

BACKGROUND TO FUNDRAISING OnSide Youth Zones has been growing rapidly and has ambitious plans to create 100 Youth Zones in towns and cities, giving young people somewhere safe and inspiring to go in their leisure time. In the short-term the initial target is to have 20 Youth Zone projects by 2020, reaching 60,000 disadvantaged young people, generating 600 new jobs and creating a further 1,000 posts for volunteers.

network, with five more to open in the coming year. The plan is to open between four and six per year across the country in the near future.
OnSide has already raised £100million of funding and the success of the Youth Zones has attracted recognition in national and local government circles. There are currently ten open Youth Zones in the OnSide
with an £8 million capital project, and will go on to be an independent charity, open seven days a week, with state-of-theart facilities, delivering over 20 sporting, artistic, cultural and general recreational activities
Each Youth Zone will start
By establishing hundreds more partnerships, engaging local and national government and continuing to leverage the knowledge and expertise of national leaders to deliver high impact youth facilities, OnSide is determined to deliver a Youth Zone in every town and city. Youth Zones are high quality, inspirational and well-run places offering young people ‘somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to’,

and targeted services. OnSide’s success is underpinned by the powerful story told by each open Youth Zone. At the heart of OnSide Youth Zones is a successful partnership between public, private and third sector organisations, the local community and young people themselves. From the building design through to the activities on offer, Youth Zones are shaped directly by the young people and communities which they benefit. This relevance and sense of ownership has been central to creating the level of attendance and engagement needed to deliver valuable outcomes. In support of their ambitious growth plans, OnSide is investing heavily in its fundraising, including the development of talent, through the creation of a Fundraising Talent Academy, the success of which is linked strongly to the Head of Major Donor Development’s leadership.

OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE The Head of Major Donor Development is a critical role that will have responsibility for the management of the Bolton based team of Major Donor Development Managers, working with them to ensure that the target income required for each Youth Zone is achieved. The postholder will also personally develop major donor relationships that will contribute to OnSide’s future success, through donations towards capital and revenue funding requirements for new Youth Zones across the North of England, and for OnSide’s core costs.
LIVING AND WORKING IN THE NORTH WEST Close to the West Pennine Moors, Bolton is located within easy reach of Manchester, Liverpool, Warrington and Leeds and the beautiful Peak and Lake Districts. Well connected by road and rail links, Bolton is increasingly seen as an affordable and attractive place to live, with a lively cultural and social scene that includes the Octagon Theatre, the Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, and popular places to eat and drink within the town centre and beyond. The town is well served with good primary and secondary schools both in the state and independent sectors, and benefits from a number of open green spaces including Jumbles and Moses Gate Country Parks.

Director of Fundraising, Individual Zone Boards, Senior Volunteers
PURPOSE This is an exceptional role in a charity whose success is driven by major donor fundraising. The Head of Major Donor Development will lead a team of three Major Donor Development Managers who are based in the Bolton office and are responsible for securing the first three years of revenue funding for new Youth Zones (currently in East Manchester, Warrington and Grimsby). New fundraisers will be hired as new Youth Zone projects go live. The person in this role will secure substantial donations from high net worth individuals (particularly for capital projects) building lasting, high quality relationships to enable OnSide to continue to create Youth Zones across the North for many young people, particularly those most in need, over generations to come. The role will work directly with each Zone’s Board and other senior volunteers - a wide range of impressive, high profile, successful and driven individuals with links to a wider business network across their locales. The right individual in post will steer and support them to reach out to others in their network and bring them into the charity; this requires someone with the credibility and character to take advantage of these connections, using them wisely to open doors, follow up introductions and generate pace in the fundraising activities of OnSide. OnSide is entrepreneurial by nature, with pace, innovation and resilience in its DNA. This is not a role for developing intricate strategies and cases for support but rather for leadership, action and asking. If you are looking for a role that will stretch your fundraising ability and give you the chance to consistently generate the highest level of major gifts, then this is for you. Given the prominence of major donor fundraising within OnSide, the post holder is supported with an expenditure budget that meets the needs of high-performance fundraising.
