ROLE IN CONTEXT The Development team has overall responsibility for fundraising for Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) which comprises the National Maritime Museum the Queen’s House, Royal Observatory Greenwich and the Cutty Sark. RMG cares for some of the UK’s most significant artistic, scientific and historical collections and historically important buildings and vessels. Vital support is raised from companies, individuals, trusts and foundations and other grant giving bodies. RMG welcomed 2.6 million visitors last year and is one of the UK’s top 10 visitor attractions, drawing an audience from around the globe to experience everything from Nelson’s Trafalgar uniform to a world-class art collection to standing on the Meridian Line. The opening of the Sammy Ofer Wing at the National Maritime Museum in 2011 created a new space for temporary exhibitions. In September 2018, RMG opened 4 new permanent galleries in the National Maritime Museum and a photography gallery. A state of the art conservation and collections centre in Kidbrooke was also created as part of a £26m development project.
Within the new corporate plan, RMG have the Cutty Sark’s 150th Anniversary in 2019, a celebratory year to launch a multimillion pound fund to support the maintenance and upkeep of the ship over the next decade or more, and the 350th anniversary of the Royal Observatory in 2025, prior to which RMG plan to undertake considerable development across the site. To support these and other ambitions as well as develop philanthropy streams to support revenue needs, RMG are now keen to grow the development team to ensure its income generation ambitions are achieved. This post is one of two new Philanthropy Manager roles focussed on generating a broader pool of individual supporters and will initially focus on developing supporters for the development of the Royal Observatory, which draws visitors from all over the world not least because of the draw of the Meridian Line. Royal Observatory is also home to London’s only Planetarium and welcomes huge numbers of school children and adults for its learning programme. Funding priorities include upgraded galleries, learning classrooms and developing STEM learning funding.
