It’s certainly a tough introduction to the new season, but it’s one which perfectly sums up the competitiveness of the Premiership.
Good afternoon to you all and welcome back to Sandy Park for the opening fixture in the 2022/23 season against the reigning Gallagher Premiership champions, Leicester Tigers.
“
”
Last season, I’ll admit, was difficult for Rob and his squad, particularly given their success in recent years, but the good thing about sport is that the game is always evolving and the challenge is to strive to find your next success story as quickly as Ourpossible.rebrand, whatever take you have on it, has allowed us to start afresh for the new season and I know the players, staff and many supporters’ alike,
that new chapter and what better way to do that than with the visit of the Tigers - a team who themselves have shown their own fighting spirit to get back to the summit of English rugby.
Over the coming weeks and months, we will witness battle after battle here at Sandy Park, it’s up to us to ensure we ultimately win the war!

welcome
Certainly, last weekend’s visit of the Red Roses to Exeter gave us the ideal warm-up to the new campaign, but now we are set for the main course as we prepare for nine months of mouth-watering action, featuring both our men’s and women’s sides.

Over the coming weeks and months, we will witness battle after battle here at Sandy Park, it’s up to us to ensure we ultimately win the war!
In what has been yet another very busy summer - both on and off the field - here at Sandy Park, I know there is a real sense of excitement and anticipation ahead of what should be another big season ahead.

Good afternoon and welcome back to Sandy Park for our first Premiership game of the 2022-2023 season. It promises to be a competitive and exciting season and what better way to kick it off than welcoming last year’s champions, Leicester Tigers, to our ground to start what I expect to be an amazing journey for our team over the next ten months or so.
I am keeping things simple because I want the team, players and supporters to enjoy our journey this season and the only way we can really do that is to play in a way that shows how much we care about what we do and each other. Every season has different challenges - and it will be how we face these day by day, week by week, that will be the key to our success.
The second is to realistically aim to be a Heineken Cup team, which currently means top eight and then as we progress, we start to target top four and then a home semifinal. The truth is that our destiny in the competition is in our hands, if we play at our potential and keep striving to improve then we will build a good season. That job starts today.
I don’t mind saying that we are in a bit of a rebuild process because great teams don’t just happen, they take care, guidance and some nurturing to come to fruition. However, I have to say that I am seeing plenty of qualities in the squad that show this rebuild doesn’t need to be slow. It will have pain and doubt as every tough journey has, but I am certain that we can grow as the season goes on. After all, if we get on an upward journey, we will reach our goal sooner or later, that is what is now important, getting better as often and as quickly as we can!

In many ways we have talked to the players about a new start, a Chiefs 2.0 so to speak. Our re-branding has helped to give this a focus and I really hope that our supporters will buy into the pre-match build-up that the players have requested as part of making Sandy Park our tribal, savage fortress. How we play in front of our supporters has been a big talking point amongst the players and I’m looking forward to how the team show that today.
I have never set the team a target in the table before a season starts, but I have always asked them to tick off various targets as we go. The first is to collect points at every opportunity, be it wins, try bonus points and even losing bonus points.
the wing, rather than her normal position of scrum-half, MacDonald said post-game: “I wasn’t necessarily planning for it so to be in the position to get a game under my belt was amazing and everything I could have wished for,” she said.
For the 26-year-old, who was later named player of the match, pulling on the England jersey again was certainly something to savour, particularly after she was told last November that her career could well have been finished after she suffered a serious neck
In reply, MacDonald’s new club-mates Hope Rogers and Gabby Cantorna both got on the scoresheet for the visitors, whose other score was a penalty try.
MacDonald’s brace, along with scores from Jess Breach (2), Amy Cokayne (2), Natasha Hunt and Ellie Kildunne ensured it was a regulation win for Simon Middleton’s side in the first of two World Cup warmup fixtures.

MacDONALD BRACE HELPS ENGLAND TO RECORD-BREAKING WIN
Exeter Chiefs star Claudia MacDonald helped herself to a try double as England Women claimed a record-breaking 24th Test win in a row as they saw off the USA 52-14 at Sandy Park.

England’s second warm-up match will be against Wales in Bristol on September 14 and head coach Middleton will announce his World Cup squad - trimmed from the current 39 to 32 - on September 20.

The victory in front of 10,907 Sandy Park fans makes the Red Roses the first top-tier international side to win 24 Tests in a row, with their last loss coming against New Zealand in July 2019.

“Having been at the Brumbies for so long, it’s going to be a different challenge of course, but it’s one that I feel I need. I’ve played over in England and Europe before at Test level, but having that weekly challenge is going to be something new.”
After 11 seasons with the Brumbies, Sio – who has been capped 71 times by the Wallabies – says the ‘time is right’ for him to experience a new challenge and the Chiefs is just that opportunity as he readies himself for the demands of both England and European Rugby.
Exeter Chiefs have bolstered their front-row options ahead of the new 2022/23 season with the signing of experienced Australian international Scott Sio.
CHIEFS BRING IN AUSSIE INTERNATIONAL SIO ahead of the new campaign
“I’m super excited about the move,” he said. “It’s something new, something fresh and I’m really looking forward to the challenge. I’ve spoken to a few boys about the club and all of them have talked it up and said it’s a great place to go and play rugby.
Sio has watched from afar games in both the Gallagher Premiership and Heineken Champions Cup and admits at being somewhat envious at the games being played out.
13
“It’s going to be physical and a lot is put on you as a forward, but that’s one of the things that attracted me to coming over. I wanted to test myself in a new team and a new environment.”
Sio is Baxter’s sixth new signing of the close season, having already brought in Leinster duo Jack Dunne and Rory O’Loughlin, as well as Aidon Davis, Ruben Van Heerden and, more recently, Solomone Kata.
The 30-year-old loosehead is Rob Baxter’s latest new addition, joining the club on a long-term deal from Super Rugby side, the Brumbies.
“It’s going to be good coming up against some of the best teams in Europe,” he added. “Watching the Champions Cup you can see it’s a pretty special competition and I know the Premiership is going to be just as tough.
“IT’S A STATE OF MIND”
Only a select few every get to wear the coveted Green Beret and become a Royal Marine, but this summer the Exeter Chiefs were given an insight into the make-up of one of Britain’s elite fighting forces. Pre-season is a necessary evil ahead of any new campaign, but the hard work and effort put in ahead of the big kick-off can often be the difference between success and failure.
CHIEFS SQUAD PUT THROUGH THEIR PACES BY THE ROYAL MARINES
Chiefs’ Director of Rugby, Rob Baxter, admitted at the end of last season that his squad would be looking to go ‘back to basics’ in their bid to get back amongst the Gallagher Premiership frontrunners.
A new rebrand for the Devon club this summer has offered the perfect reason for times of change and this week the Chiefs squad got stuck into life at the nearby Commando Training Centre Royal Marines at
14
Building on the already strong links between the club and the Royal Marines, the squad reported for duty on Monday for the start of two-days intense training, all of which was aimed at not only testing their physical capabilities, but also their mental capabilities, both individually and collectively.
Day One started with work within the gym and swimming pool, but was then followed by tackling the notorious Bottom Field – a series of Commando tests (Assault Course, 200 metre Carry, plus Rope Regain) all of which are aimed to test the body to it’s very limit.
An initial two-mile, cross-country course through rugged terrain and water obstacles, the squad were then put into teams to run the four miles back to the CTC base with a ladened stretcher.
A brief respite, which included a leadership talk from RM Major Matt Gray, was then followed by another swim session and onto the last of the training tasks, the strength-sapping Mud Run in the nearby Exe Estuary.
time, I wish to thank Cpt Pete Taylor, Sgt Al Gasson, together with Chief of Staff, Lt Col Tom Evans-Jones and all the PTIs at the Commando Training Centre for their support throughout the two days.
With energy at a premium at this stage, the Chiefs had to dig deep in a series of tasks that included crawling, pushing and carrying through the thick mud.
Head of Strength & Conditioning, Mark Twiggs, himself a former Royal Marine PTI, was delighted with the effort, commitment and performance put in by the entire squad.
Lympstone to ready themselves for seasonal battle.
“We wanted to test the boys in a different environment and it’s been a while since we’ve come down to CTC and worked with the Marines on something like this,” he said. “What we’ve seen from the guys, both individually and collectively, was outstanding and it’s sure to set the foundations for what we believe will be a very strong pre-season
There was to be no let-up on Day Two for the Chiefs squad, who again following an early morning gym session at the club were then dispatched
to Woodbury Common to undergo the Marines Endurance course.

“Everyone knows the link between ourselves at the Royal Marines is very strong, but this has merely helped to galavanise that bond even further.”
Professor Lisa Roberts, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, welcomed the new partnership.
The partnership will see students from the University provided with extended employability opportunities, as Graduate Business Partners with the Chiefs, across a range of departments, including their commercial and marketing division.
UNIVERSITY OF EXETER BOLSTER THEIR LINKS WITH THE EXETER CHIEFS
Professor Roberts said: “I am absolutely delighted that the University of Exeter has entered into this
Exeter Chiefs Chairman and Chief Executive, Tony Rowe OBE, expressed his pleasure at the announcement, saying: “We are delighted to further underline our relationship with the University of Exeter, a partnership that has proved to be hugely successful for many years. The exchange of talent between our two organisations is a fruitful development pathway and I look forward to seeing the next generation of young stars progress both on and off the playing field.”
Building on a strong relationship stretching back decades, and pre-dating the Chiefs meteoric rise to the pinnacle of top-flight rugby, the new agreement will come into force ahead of the 2022/23 season.
16
“We have worked as partners for a number of decades, achieving remarkable pathways for our students to meet not just their academic, but also their professional ambitions, through exceptional mentoring and coaching schemes. This new agreement will help take this relationship to the next levels, and bring real benefits to our students, and the Chiefs, in the coming years and beyond.”
The University’s logo and branding will also appear at the Chiefs’ Sandy Park stadium, as well as adorning the kit of both the men and women’s first team squads.

In what will be the first encounter between the sides, the Chiefs will prepare to take on United Rugby Championship runners-up the Bulls in what will be a landmark occasion for both clubs. The Bulls narrowly missed out on the title earlier this month, going down 18-13 to the Stormers, who face London Irish and Montpellier in Pool B.
Following the draw at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Rob Baxter’s side now know their opposition for the four pool fixtures, which will take place home and away, during the months of December 2022 and January 2023.
Exeter Chiefs has been drawn against Castres Olympique and the Bulls in Pool A of the 2022/23 Heineken Champions Cup.
The French outfit, who were defeated in the final of the Top 14 this month by Montpellier, narrowly defeated the Chiefs on home soil 29-25, but were well beaten in the return leg at Sandy Park, 34-12.
EPCR will begin to prepare the fixture schedule, with an announcement of exact dates, venues, kickoff times and TV coverage to follow as soon as practicable.
Castres, meanwhile, are no strangers to the Chiefs in Europe, the two sides having met back in the 2018/19 season.
In a landmark decision, EPCR have welcomed four United Rugby Championship sides based in South Africa, plus Toyota Free State Cheetahs, into their competitions. Stormers, Bulls and Cell C Sharks will premier in the Heineken Champions Cup, with Lions and Cheetahs making their first European berth in the Challenge Cup.
Having been pitted in Tier Four, the Chiefs will now battle it out alongside 11 other teams in Pool A for the top eight spots in order to progress to the Round of 16 stage of the Heineken Champions Cup, with the final being hosted at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin on May, 20 2023.

LEICESTER TIGERS
As well as being appointed Leicester captain for the upcoming season, Liebenberg also captained South Africa U20s in 2015.
On the international stage, Borthwick was a proven perfomer, winning 57 Test caps between 2001 and 2010. He was also captain of his country.
Born in Brackenfell, South Africa on October 10, 1995
Liebenberg joined the Tigers ahead of the 2019-20 campaign and has quickly made himself a fans’ favourite at Welford Road. Last season he helped them to lift the Gallagher Premiership title against Saracens.
41
His senior career started following school when he moved to Pretoria to join the Blue Bulls, following in the footsteps of older brother Wiaan.
In 2008, Borthwick joined Premiership rivals Saracens, whom he would help to both English and European title success, before retiring in 2014.
Having started out at Preston Grasshoppers RFC, he joined Bath in 1998, making his debut against Saracens in December of that year. He would stay at the club until 2008 and was captain when they lifted the European Challenge Cup in 2007-08.
Born on October 12, 1979 in Carlisle.
HEAD COACH: STEVE BORTHWICK
In December 2015, he was appointed England forwards coach, a position he held until 2019 when it was confirmed he would take over as Leicester’s new head coach for the 2020-21 season.
captain: HANRO LIEBENBERG
He made his Super Rugby debut for the Bulls in 2015 in a defeat against the Hurricanes. - and would stay with the club until 2018, after which he went on short-term deal to Stade Francais.
Ben Youngs says he is “refreshed and energised” for the start of Leicester Tigers’ Premiership defence after last season’s “emotional rollercoaster”.
“For the first time in a long time I’ve actually got no external weight of the world on my shoulders,” he said. “When you have had a big season and also a rollercoaster in terms of emotions outside of rugby, sometimes you need that time away, that reflection, to regroup and I was able to do that.

LEICESTER TIGERS
He helped Tigers beat Saracens in June’s final two weeks after his sister-in-law Tiffany - wife of brother and team-mate Tom - died.
The scrum-half, 33, was then rested for England’s summer tour of Australia.
“Now that I’ve had it, I look at myself and I think ‘am I in better physical shape than I was last year? Yeah, I am. Mentally, am I in better shape than I was last year? Yeah, I am.
“This year, for the first time in a good few years, my personal life is good, I’ve got nothing going on there and I can fully focus on what I love doing, which is playing Youngsrugby.”
“For me now it’s easy for me to say ‘yes, I did need it’,” Youngs said of the time off in pre-season. When you are away [on international duty] and you go and you go, you never have a chance to do that. You are just going because you don’t know any different.
said delivering an 11th English title for the Tigers - a side that only avoided the drop two years earlier after Sarries were relegated for salary cap breacheswas also about ensuring his brother Tom had “closure on his career”.
“To have that moment was something the team wanted to give him,” Youngs said. “It was emotional, of course, for where we had been as a club to where we were in that moment and the two weeks that had been. It was a bit of a blur because of the emotional rollercoaster it had been for the last 11 months of what we had gone Youngs, through.”England’s most capped player with 117 appearances, said being afforded a rare summer break
43
without any international duties has put him in “a better space” before the new season, which starts against Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park today.
Tom retired from rugby union just weeks before Tiffany passed away.
“I’ve not had this kind of freedom to really narrow in on what I’m trying to do for a long, long time. Now I’ve got it, I want to make the most out of it. For me, it’s refreshing. I suppose I’m feeling energised and excited and all the right things.”

Much of today’s pre-match talk will revolve around the players who are missing, either through resting up after the summer internationals, injury or recovering from close-season surgery.
The Chiefs could almost put out a whole team of unavailable players.
NIGEL WALROND
SO here we are again, at the start of Exeter Chiefs’ 13th season in the Premiership.
It doesn’t feel much like a level playing field that Exeter are entering this season to me, which will only make it even harder to improve on last season’s finishing position.
I am sure there was joy in many Chiefs’ supporters hearts when the Tigers beat Saracens in June’s Twickenham final!
It has been all change at Sandy Park during the summer, with a rebranding costing hundreds of thousands of pounds, a change to part of the coaching staff, and some familiar faces missing from the Chiefs’ squad after heading for pastures new or retiring.
The question is, will there be a change on the pitch after last season’s disappointing seventh-place
Once again, they have opted to go down the route of only having one pre-season friendly for their frontline players – last Friday night’s trip to Ulster (though they have had an internal match) – and that lack of preparation in terms of match practice always leaves me feeling uncomfortable.
Exeter seem to have been harder hit by the new lower salary cap brought in due to the financial impact of Covid, and while Chiefs have been forced to allow some key members of their squad to depart, some Premiership rivals appear to have gone on a summer spending spree.
They could not have been handed a much tougher start to the campaign than a home match against last season’s deserving Premiership champions Leicester Tigers.
Enjoy the Game!

the summer has been spent rebuilding the off-the-field culture that was such a key part to the Chiefs’ success through the past few years, and which was partly destroyed by the restrictions brought about by Covid.
Steve Borthwick has done a cracking job since taking over, and they will be looking to repeat that success this season.
They looked rusty in their opening game of the season 12 months ago at Welford Road after adopting a similar approach, and I fear a repeat today, but the coaches know what they are doing, and it should be a cracking match with which to start the season.

Within days of his arrival at Sandy Park, Dunne knew his new club would offer a fresh outlook on rugby life.
CHIEFS NEWCOMER SET FOR BIG KICK-OFF
DUNNEJACK 50
This weekend, however, he will be looking to make his first big strides into the Gallagher Premiership, locking horns with the defending champions, Leicester Tigers, in what should be a mouth-watering opening day fixture at Sandy Park.
“Having been here only a few months, I can see it’s a special club and the group of players we have are very together. Not only doing they enjoy working hard, but they play hard as well - and that’s a great mix to have moving forward.”
DUNNE AND DUSTED NOW IT’S TIME TO REALLY GET GOING
The 23-year-old is one of six new recruits brought to Devon this summer by Director of Rugby, Rob Baxter, who was keen to bolster his ranks following a plethora of departures at the end of last season.
For Dunne, it will be his first taste of rugby away from Dublin, having come through the ranks at Leinster. It’s a challenge, though, the towering forward is clearing relishing.
“I grew up supporting Leinster and for the last four years I’ve played there, so it’s been a big part of my life,” he says. “That said, I felt I needed a change and that’s why I’ve come to the Chiefs.
When it comes to standing out in a crowd, Exeter Chiefs newcomer Jack Dunne need not worry too much.
Standing at 6ft 8ins tall, the Irishman is certainly bigger than most.

52
“The challenge you can see is there every week and this will certainly be a baptism of fire first game up. As a player, though, you want to be involved in the big games and this is where it really starts for me and the team.”
Now, Dunne and his fellow Chiefs are hoping to put that hard work into practice, starting with the visit of the champions.
‘THIS IS WHERE IT REALLY STARTS FOR ME’
“They didn’t have too many Marines over in Dublin,” he joked. “Training with them, it was just mad - probably one of the hardest thing I’ve done in my life. The benefits, though, are just incredible because it shows you can go to pretty dark places and still come out on the other side.”
“I think all of us are chomping at the bit to get started,” he said. “We’ve worked hard in pre-season, but there’s no point doing that if you then don’t follow it up afterwards. This will be my first taste of the Premiership, but I can’t wait to get started.

1) Designated funds: This is the money generated on Exeter Chiefs match days through bucket donations and car parking. Each season we ‘adopt’ 20 charities who help to collect spare change and notes. At the end of the fundraising year, the cash is shared with our designated charities at a celebratory dinner. The list of charities is reviewed by the trustees annually.
EXETERCHIEFSFOUNDATION.ORG.UK
Founded by club Chairman Tony Rowe OBE, the team of trustees is drawn from the Chiefs board of directors and the business community.
As well as deciding on how the charity’s money is shared, the trustees organise a number of fundraising events each year including the prestigious Devon Sports Awards, as well as pre-season and end of season gala dinners.
“We are a fundraising organisation committed to improving the prosperity of the communities we serve by making donations that make people’s lives better.”
WHO WE ARE
To date the Foundation has raised £2m.
The Exeter Chiefs Foundation raises funds in two ways:
All of the money we raise is donated to worthy causes in and around the city with a focus on supporting ‘tangible’ investments.
54
HOW THE CHARITY WORKS
In January 2019, the Foundation received a record £350,000 non-designated donation following the fine imposed on Saracens after being found guilty of breaching the league’s stringent salary cap regulations. The Chiefs board of directors voted unanimously to hand over the club’s share of money.
OUR MISSION
All charities in the greater Exeter area are able to apply for funds, either from an annual designated pot of money, or one-off donations (see more below).
The Exeter Chiefs Foundation is a charity that exists with the sole aim of helping other charities.
2) Undesignated funds: These are funds that are generated by friends and supporters of the charity or any non-match related events organised by the Foundation. This money goes into a separate pot that any charity or organisation can apply for, at any time.
The amounts awarded by the trustees range from a few hundred pounds, to a record £50,000 which was matched by the Exeter Summer Property Ball Committee and presented to Hospiscare to pay for the vital refurbishment of a 12-bed ward at Searle House in Exeter.
These have included funding building and renovation works, the installation of play equipment, and assistance with buying a large number of vehicles, ranging from minibuses to a boat for the Topsham Sea Scout Group.
