Startups get boost from ASEAN links

A

s the member countries of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) integrate their economies, this leads to a larger yet more challenging playing field. In this environment, nimble startup businesses can take advantage of the wealth of opportunities available in this dynamic region. However, limited funding and resources means that they may need a bit of a push to be able to interact and compete with their counterparts across the ecosystem. In order to boost and accelerate the growth of the vibrant startup ecosystem in ASEAN countries and Japan, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) have envisioned a series of ASEAN startup pitch events headlined: “Navigate Asia.” Launched in Bangkok, these events aim to give promising entrepreneurs a chance to turn their vision into reality in five countries. The ASEAN-Japan Fair, the first of this series, was on the sidelines of the 2017 ASEAN Business Investment Summit (ABIS) in Manila this November. The event aimed to encourage business collaboration between ASEAN and Japan by providing an opportunity to raise brand awareness of their products and services. During the two-day session, high-potential startups from ASEAN countries and Japan presented its emerging technologies and solutions. The goal is that through these presentations and networking sessions, both startups and large enterprises in the ASEAN countries and Japan will explore future partnerships and collaborations. The array of inspiring startups who presented and exhibited at the event ranged from online event venue matching service Event Banana from Thailand, Philippine mobile technology startup YOYO Holdings, and Japanese FinTech-Internet of Things company Global Mobility Service.

New leisure hub to rise in Mactan By RICHARD RAMOS

T

hree giant industry stakeholders have joined forces to break ground for a 14-hectare PhP35-billion spread that will give rise to a seafront resort and commercial development fronting rich marine vegetation in Mactan Island, Cebu. Leisure estate Ayala Land Inc. (ALI), Cebu Holdings Inc., and Taft Properties, Inc. have merged their resources for a one-of-a-kind development dubbed Seagrove, which is envisioned to become Cebu’s first coastal boardwalk retail center complete with lagoons, a 40-hectare mangrove forest, and a nature-inspired pedestrian corridor. The estate is designed around central water amenity and open spaces highlighting Magellan Bay and the existing mangrove spread where one can enjoy varied indoor and outdoor recreation amidst lush greens and bay front. “We are very excited about this project. As our 24th estate to date, Seagrove brings various attractions that will also help boost Cebu’s tourism economy even further. This will be the next world-class leisure estate in

Cebu,” declared Meean Dy, Ayala Land SVP, Group Head of Strategic Land Bank Management, and president of the joint venture company Taft Punta Engano Properties, Inc (TPEPI). Initial phase of the project costs PhP4 billion, consisting of the boardwalk, support restaurants and shops, a portion of the lagoon, an events ground, and the pedestrian corridor which is due to open in 2020. Sustainable practices Iris Mediano, director of TPEPI, said the property is located across the Punta Engano Wharf and will give rise to the first Holiday Inn Resort in the country by 2022. This will consist of 200 rooms, game room, wellness facilities, eco-friendly spaces, and diverse recreational forms. Eco-friendly practices in site resiliency include greywater recycling, use of rainwater catchment facilities, groundwater recharge, use of endemic Filipino plant species for landscaping, preservation of existing mangroves, and use of LED lights. Jun Bisnar, CHI president, estimated that CHI has spent nearly PhP14 billion in the last

five years in Cebu. “We can spend at least PhP39 billion in Cebu alone in the next five years on Seagrove and other projects in Cebu IT Park, two additional malls, another hotel, and others. This is our sixth existing tourism estate in the Visayas-Mindanao region and our ninth overall,” he affirmed. The initial phase will merit approximately 2,000 jobs, while full-scale development will require a total of 13,000 jobs. The total Gross Leasable Space is around 10,000 square meters to be implemented in two phases. Target markets are families, groups, foreign and domestic tourists, corporations, locals, and businesses in Cebu searching for the ultimate in eco-fun experience. Seagrove is coined from the words “sea” and “mangrove,” in tandem with the value proposition “Coastal Leisure Hub of Mactan.” TPEPI is a joint venture, real estate company between Cebu Holdings Inc. (a subsidiary of Ayala Land Inc.) and Taft Property Ventures Development Corp. (Metro Gaisano Group). TPEPI is the owner and developer of Seagrove for which it appointed Ayala Land Inc. as the Project Manager.

New Chinese airlines welcomed at Cebu airport Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu – A ceremonial water cannon salute welcomed the arrival of two new Chinese airline partners – Juneyao Airlines and Okay Airways – at the MactanCebu International Airport on November 1. About 110 passengers from Shanghai and 180 passengers from Xianyang were aboard the inaugural flights of Juneyao Airlines and Okay Airways, respectively. About the flights Juneyao Airlines and Okay Airways began mounting thrice-weekly flights to Shanghai Pudong International Airport and to China’s historic city Xianyang, respectively. Juneyao Airlines is a major full-service airline based in Shanghai, operating both domestic and international services from Shanghai Hongqiao International and Shanghai Pudong International Airports. Cebu is the first Philippine destination in which the airline operates. “Cebu is the second largest city and they have lots of opportunities and chance to establish a long-term cooperation with Shanghai and Cebu, so that’s why we chose Cebu as our first destination,” said Steven

Zhou, Cebu station manager of Juneyao Airlines. Meanwhile, Okay Airways’ XianyangCebu-Xianyang is its second flight service in the Philippines. Tianjin based OK Air is China’s first privately owned Chinese carrier. “The market of Okay Airways is more on the tourists and Cebu is a destination near the cities where there are many tourist spots as well,” said Jo Zablan, OK Air’s Airport Service Manager. According to GMCAC President Louie Ferrer, destination marketing is their main strategy in strengthening Cebu’s connectivity. “Promoting the province and its surrounding areas to other Asian countries, especially China, is among our highest priorities,” said Ferrer. “Studies have shown that China is the highest spending tourist market in the world – we want to bring this highspending Chinese market to Cebu.” GMCAC is also looking to promote Cebu to other untapped markets, which includes other provinces in China, Australia, while other Southeast Asian countries like Thailand are also high on the list. Ferrer confirms the company is also targeting new flights to North Asia, the Middle East, North America, and Europe. MCIA will also launch new flight services to Beijing and Bangkok, and more domestic flights in the succeeding months.

Baler, Siargao surfers top Lanuza tilt

W

averiders from Baler and Siargao defied the odds and came up with upset victories as they topped the recent 15th Surfing Festival at the Doot Poktoy Surfing Paradise in Lanuza, Surigao del Sur. Nineteen-year old Neil Sanchez of Baler delivered the biggest surprise by topping the Men’s Shortboard Open (Grade 2). Sanchez, who is just in his second national tournament, walked away with the PhP80,000 grand cash prize. He edged Philmar Alipayo of Siargao, a grizzled veteran of various national and international cups, who settled for second place. Jay- R Esquivel of La Union and PJ Alipayo of Siargao shared third place. Longboard Men’s Open (Grade 1), newcomer Mark Aguila of Baler also broke into the winner's circle to grab top honors and the PhP50,000 prize. Homegrown Loinex Ruina showed his mastery of Lanuza’s waves as he bagged second place, followed by La Union’s Benito Nerida and Jeff dela Torre who were tied at third. In the women’s category, surfers from Siargao dominated the field with Nilbie Blancada, regarded as the top Filipina surfer, leading the charge in the Women's Shortboard Open (Grade 1). Fresh from her stint at an international cup in Bali, she duplicated last year’s winning feat. Diane Nogalo, and Pinky Alipayo and Jolina Uriarte won second and third places, respectively. Meanwhile, Daisy Valdez of La Union

Women's Longboard Open (Grade 1) made a successful defense of her first place win last year, edging perennial rival Ikit Agudo of Siargao. Strengthening Siargao’s dominance were Aping Agudo and Maricel who shared third honors. It was a shutout in the Grommet (under 16 Division) for Siargao as it bagged all the awards with Gabriel Lerog as champion, and Christian Araquiel and John Carlos Nogalo, as runners-up. Aram Laudes of Lanuza salvaged local pride as he shared third place finish. The tourney is the second leg of the Philippine Surfing Cup Tournament, which goes around the country’s surfing circuit in search for national athletes who will compete in the Asian Games in 2018 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Located at the mouth of Doot Poktoy River, this surf spot is noted for having one of the country’s longest right-hander waves on the Pacific seaboard. According to Lanuza Mayor Salvacion Azarcon, the sporting event aims to make the town as the surfing paradise and sports adventure tourism spot in mainland Caraga region. The weeklong surfing fest included fringe activities such an agri-aqua trade fair, coastal cleanups, evening concerts, beach dance contests, surfing clinics, and the Miss Surfing Lanuza pageant which selected Kylah Sanchez of Cebu City as the town’s ambassadress of goodwill and tourism.

Landmark move to set a precedent for stricter environmental law enforcement

T

he country’s very first case filing at the Department of Justice (DOJ) for violation of environmental laws in a protected area pursuant to National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) Act, RA-7586, was made recently. This involved alleged commercial fishing done by 13 respondents apprehended in the Tañon Strait Protected

Seascape, one of the country’s largest marine protected areas. The DOJ has created a National Task Force of Special Prosecutors pursuant to RA 586, to implement its mandate of efficient, effective and equitable administration of justice with a particular focus on protected areas. This was borne out of the collaborative ef-

eanette Kamphuis recently launched her second solo exhibit in the Philippines dubbed “Love for Nature.” Some of the Swedish artist’s paintings were displayed at the ninth floor meeting and banquet rooms of Marco Polo Ortigas Manila last October. Kamphuis has been to 96 countries and stayed in the US for more than a decade before moving to the Philippines. She

first came here in 2011 to help out her sick brother who is living in the country. As fate would have it, she had a flu that would not go away, prompting her to stay longer. She started painting at home, and when people came to visit, they suggested she meet some local artists. The rest, as they say, is history. From then on, she participated in 26 group exhibits and launched her solo exhibit.

The law recognizes that effective administration and sustainable management of protected areas is “Possible only through cooperation among national government, local government and concerned private organizations; that the use and enjoyment of these protected areas must be consistent with the principles of biological diversity and sustainable development.” “This is a landmark moment which should help deter commission of prohibited acts es-

pecially in ecologically critical areas such as our protected areas,” says Oceana Philippines Vice-President Atty. Gloria Estenzo Ramos. “Illegal and destructive fishing dramatically destroys the vibrance and productivity of our oceans – causing our country to lose about PhP44 Billion in lost fishing revenues yearly.” President Rodrigo Duterte promised to curb illegal fishing through stricter enforcement of marine and fisheries-related laws. Adds Ramos, “With stricter law enforcement, more of the country’s marine resources can be protected to provide food and livelihood for our fellow Filipinos.” Oceana works around the world to restore the productivity of the world’s fisheries.

Patrol vessels from the Philippine Navy, Coast Guard and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources docked in Dumaguete City during the send-off of the vessels for patrol operations in the Tañon Strait. Oceana and its allies are working to protect the Strait from illegal and destructive fishing – thereby protecting the lives and livelihoods of small-scale fisherfolk dependent on the sea.

YARN BOMB, KNIT BOMB:

A Beautiful Collision of Art, Whimsy, Nature, and Tradition By ANGIE DUARTE

T

Check out a visual installation like few others, by G.A.M.E. and the country's Queen of Knitwear

here are many who might regard art as a lofty ideal, or, perhaps, as a fanciful exercise into the realm of whimsy – one which has little place in the stark reality of everyday life. Then there are those who might say that art is, in fact, so intertwined with everyday reality that this connection is at once solid and unshakable, as it is subtle and imperceptible. I think the truth lies somewhere in between, for what is art if it cannot be both whimsical and pragmatic? Both elusive and accessible? When these aspects collide, the result is an explosion of multi-sensory proportions—such as one might find in Yarn Bomb Knit Bomb, an ongoing exhibit at the Greenbelt Mall Gardens in Makati. Getting their G.A.M.E. on Yarn Bomb Knit Bomb is a unique installation, rooted in the graffiti or street art form of “yarn bombing,” or covering a tree or any other structure with colorful yarn. Born from the collaboration of G.A.M.E. (the Greenbelt + Ayala Museum Experience) with Manila’s Queen of Knitwear, Lulu Tan-Gan, the eyecatching exhibit is the first of its kind in the vicinity. “With every campaign launched at Ayala Malls, we always aim to push the envelope and introduce our mall-goers to new experiences,” notes Joseph Reyes, Assistant Vice President and Area Head of Central Manila, Ayala Malls Group. “When it comes to the museum experience, traditionally we think of white walls and art works simply displayed in frames and on glass counters. But Ayala Museum sees itself beyond this, setting up creative, inspiring spaces around the mall and the city.” “The mall is more than just a place to shop and hang out, it’s also a creative hub where you can discover new things and explore new concepts,” he adds, in explanation of the concept of G.A.M.E. Art explodes onto the green In line with the group’s mission to make art more accessible to the public, Tan-Gan’s installation explodes in a dazzling array of retro colors (think: bright pinks, fiery oranges, vivid greens, and the like) all across the Greenbelt Gardens, right by Ayala Museum. Imagine, centuries-old Balete trees clothed in vivid and vibrant “sweaters” and “dresses” made of doilies, as knitted caterpillars crawl up and down the arbors’ vines, as if to marvel at the fashion finery. Rocks in ponds and lampposts along walkways take on a new sar1 The Retro Galactic Communitree designed in partnership with craft enthusiasts 2 Ayala Malls Greenbelt GM Mina Domingo, Ayala Malls Group Assistant Vice President and Area Head of Central Manila Joseph Reyes, featured designer for Yarn Bomb Knit Bomb exhibit Lulu Tan Gan and Ayala Museum Senior Director Ma. and future, inspiring others to revive, repurpose and innovate traditional knitting, weaving and crochet.” It takes a community to crochet a tree sweater Adding to the significance of the exhibit is the fact that Tan-Gan got the community involved in the knitting and crocheting of doilies for the Balete tree (which the group behind the exhibit christened the “Communitree”). According to the knitwear maven, more than a hundred people expressed their desire to participate, and, from the initial entries, she chose 30 men and women for the project. Tan-Gan curated their submissions and laid them out across the gardens with her “partner artists,” the arborists and gardeners of Greenbelt. “Those who participated (in this exhibit) come from all walks of life – we have lawyers, teachers, mothers, crochet hobbyists from all over,” TanGan relays, as she points out that traditional crafts were always meant to be enjoyed as a community.

torial sensibility, snuggly wrapped in striking patterns and prints, as well. These are sights best-enjoyed, up close and personal – trust me, it’s a heartwarming visual treat! Not to mention, they make for great spots for pictures. “This is a unique gallery that goes beyond and outside the typical walls of a museum. You can see, touch and truly experience the art,” shares Tan-Gan. “Through this exciting exhibit, Ayala Museum and Ayala Malls redefine the museum experience, bringing art outside of the gallery and to the outdoors,” adds Mariles Gustilo, Ayala Museum’s Senior Director. Retro meets contemporary Tan-Gan’s choice of the retro aesthetic (as seen in the colors, designs, and styles of the yarn bombing) is no accident – the artist, in her own purposeful way, aims to shine the spotlight on arts and crafts of the more customary kind. “Here, we’ve created scenes that train the spotlight on traditional craft, which includes images of our indigenous groups in a contemporary setting. This, in my opinion, is the best way to connect traditions and the present,” the acclaimed fashion designer says. “This exhibit is a journey that takes you both into the past

The premium dining-casual setting outfit toasts to a year of food and libation innovation By VIA BAROMA

P

rivatus Dining, Pasig’s hidden artisanal restaurant for guests seeking superb bespoke food and libations in a casual atmosphere, recently celebrated its first anniversary with an unparalleled menu that is described as revolutionary, contemporary and imaginative. With an uncomplicated premise: premium dining made more accessible and casual, Executive Chef and owner AJ Reyes kicked off Privatus’ first anniversary festivities with an audacious lineup of gustatory treats, which included distinct delicacies like Balut Gem Soup (a flavorful balut broth with glazed fertilized duck served in its shell); and Ox Cerveaux Butter on Grilled Bread (charcoal grilled rustic bread topped with creamy ox cerveaux butter, smoked sisig, and arugula). The process It was a showcase of what has made Privatus a unique dining destination in just its first year. Like its Modern Kare-Kare, which is their interpretation of contemporary karekare made with grilled beef shank, seared ox tongue, ox tripe, and served with peanut sauce, black miso, and ox tail adlai; the Lechon de Leche (slow-cooked roasted pig, quarter served with sauce and vegetables fried rice); and Pulled Pork Pizza topped with Mexican pulled pork, mole sauce, corn, pickled chili, cilantro sauce, and tortilla chips – which are among their other offerings. “The development of this menu is a creative process. My team and I wanted to create Filipino dishes with fusion techniques that will absolutely stand out yet taste divine. This time it’s all about coming up with new

ingredients combinations. I was inspired to create a menu that takes food to the next level,” Chef AJ Reyes said. Other must try’s In just a year of operations, Privatus has already created a following with renowned dishes like The Kraken – a striking sight to behold of charred octopus served with black garlic sauce and pickled seaweed, and Squash Blossoms –exquisite crispy blossoms filled with fluffy seafood stuffing and uni mayo. And it’s one that promises to get even bigger, with new items that includes, the deliciously rich Radical Lasagna (a signature classic lasagna made with slow-cooked beef and bone marrow mixed with three luscious sauces – tomato, cheese, and pesto, and layered in fresh, homemade pasta); and the Pork and Salmon Sinuglaw – a Filipino-Western version of ceviche with grilled pork belly tossed with raw salmon, grilled vegetables, and cilantro sauce. Every Privatus indulgence is best capped off by daringly decadent desserts like Tamales Blanca (torched tamales-style coco-

nut custard served with popcorn ice cream); and Ripe Banana Cream Pie (a banana cream pie stuffed inside a ripened banana peel and topped with an incredibly delicious edible soil).

Food and libation innovation And, with the heightened awareness and appreciation for local craft brews, Privatus also marked its first year by forming a partnership with Monkey Eagle Brewery, in celebration the local craft beer movement. “Our brands complement each other. We are aligned when it comes to our respective craft as well as the quality and innovation of our products – food, libations, and craft beer,” shared Monkey Eagle Brewery Founder and Brewer Noreen Lao. “Monkey Eagle Brewery aims to provide premium quality craft beer. Our brewers received the best education abroad and applied their knowledge to our products, divulged Monkey Eagle Brewery Marketing and Sales Head Ricardo Lopa III. “Aside from the quality of our ingredients and the best German-made brewing equipment, our standards for quality and consistency sets us apart from others.” Monkey Eagle Brewery produces four distinct beers – Saison Farmhouse Ale, Blue Wheatch American Pale Wheat Ale, Burning Matt Pale Ale, and Potion 28 IPA. The Festival of Lights will run daily until Jan. 7 every half hour from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The light show is expertly choreographed by award-winning director Voltaire de Jesus and Luther Gumia. More than 1.6 million LED lights were used for the light show, adding brilliance while staying environmentally sustainable. Musical scoring for the three medleys were arranged by acclaimed musicians and composers. The musical medleys have three distinct themes - Pinoy Fiesta by Roy del Valle, Traditional Christmas by Von de Guzman, and Techno by Tris Sunguitan. Each one boasts of a different mood, pace, and rhythm, while retaining the Christmas cheer that brings people together and envelops everyone in the spirit of Christmas. For added holiday cheer, Ayala Land is also bringing the lights and sound show to its various estates across the country. It will be held at Vertis North, Nuvali, Bonifacio Global City, Centrio, and Ayala Center Cebu. Tagaytay’s Green Grass of Home By BERNARD L SUPETRAN

W

hen the legendary Welsh balladeer Tom Jones sang his 1966 no. 1 hit “Green, Green Grass of Home,” he could have been referring to Tagaytay and its scenic ridge overlooking Taal Volcano— the world’s smallest situated within a lake of the same name. With its cool crisp mountain air caressing your skin most of the year, it is arguably the closest getaway from the metro’s concrete jungle. Just over an hour away from Manila, this 634-meter high ridge’s rustic countryside charm, however, is slowly being substituted by traffic congestion as a result of rapid gentrification. Good thing, pockets of green getaways off the beaten path have retained their bucolic allure, throwing you back to the less-developed years of the ridge. Farms for tropical fruits, herbs and flowers have survived land conversion, giving visitors the agrarian ambiance, which was once the area’s top draw. The Veranda One of these hidden hideaways is The Veranda, a cozy events place tucked in the secluded nooks in the upland town of Silang, Tagaytay City’s next-door neighbor. Located inside the four-hectare Bella Rosa Farm, it is Silang’s proverbial best-kept secret, albeit something which may not be the case for long as it is gaining popularity among the well-heeled class through word of mouth. The former site of the famed Kalamunda, a by-appointment dining place of Chef Carlo Miguel, the area has been worked up in recent years to become a sprawling farm of Flowers by Rosabella found its new home a few years back. Abundant in lush greenery, fresh air, golden sunlight, and dreamy gardenscapes, The Veranda has evolved into an events venue away from the already madding crowd of the mountain city. According to owner Rosabella Ongpin, the once-bare property has evolved into what it is because of a series of fortuitous personal events – both heartbreaking and joyful, which gave birth to the establishment. She said that while widely-known for gar-

1

den weddings and intimate receptions, the homey facility is also ideal for wellness and yoga retreats, and corporate events sans the urban distractions for a more relaxing and productive gathering. Punctuated by three well-manicured garden venues, plant plots and greeneries all over, The Veranda is reminiscent of the Biblical Garden of Eden, making it even more suited for religious activities and moments of reflection. It boasts of a flower farm teeming with chrysanthemum, anthurium, gerbera and hydrangea, which find their way in some of Manila’s five-star hotels under the Rosabella brand, as well as in the very events it hosts. Healthy grub hub The Veranda is also an herbal garden of basil, rosemary, tarragon, thyme, mint, oregano, sage, and dill where its food outlet, Caroa’s Café, sources some of its ingredients and garnishing for its dishes. With its wide-range of herbs, the restaurant is looking forward to offering the farm-to-table experience, which is sought-after by health-conscious people who want a back-to-the-basics dining. The place is also earning its stripes in the food and beverage department as it slowly builds its menu dominated by local fusion, to spice up Filipino all-time favorites a fresh twist. Its signature entrée is porchetta, a sumptuous pork belly roll with tender, juicy meat and crackling, crispy skin. Other jazzed up dishes include sisig triangulo, gambas pasta, baked fish fillet thermidor, chicken inasal skewers, and the indispensable Tagaytay bulalo, passionately crafted by F&B consultant Batch Apacible. Moreover, event guests can bask in the comfort of ornately-decorated, well-appointed and spacious rooms with Oriental curio items and antiques painstaking collected by Ongpin. The top-of-the-line bridal suite is a room with a nice view and elegant interiors and furnishings, which can come with a wedding package. It also has a swimming pool that uses salt water technology and not chlorine for a healthy dip in the water.

The good news is this farm resort will no longer be so close and yet so far, as it will soon be accepting pre-booked visitors to maintain the quality of its guests and preserve its aura of exclusivity. When that time comes, we can sing with gusto that again, you’ll touch this green, green grass of home in Tagaytay.

An Ireland-based Filipino expat gives the lowdown on how to make the most of your visit to one of the most charming cities in the world.

Along the Canals of Venice Words by LORNA REAL-DEL ROSARIO / Photos by JOSE DEL ROSARIO

T

he Italian city of Venice draws millions and millions of tourists every year, banking on its enchanting waters, stunning architecture, mysterious passageways, which are harmonized by the clear blue skies it is frequently blessed with. With all the elements of a perfect backdrop for an utterly romantic setting, it’s no wonder

that Venice has been chosen as the location for a slew of Hollywood rom-coms like “The Tourist,” “Chasing Liberty,” and “Only You,” just to name a few. The calmness of the canals and the soothing gondola rides best characterize love and romance, making Venice the City of Love.

Here are 4 ways on how to best use your ACTV ticket:

Alternative tour As with other popular tourist destinations, there is an abundance of things to do in the city. Walking tours, and Grand Canal boat tours are convenient, but are quite expensive. To squeeze the most out of your budget, opt instead for a 24-hour ACTV ticket. For

just €20 you can get on a hop-on, hopoff vaporetto (water bus) – an excellent alternative to the €48-boat tour. The ticket can be purchased at train and waterbus stations, and even at accredited hotels.

Off the tourist trail

Bear with me for a moment, and try to believe that despite the millions of tourists flocking to Venice, there are still places and things to do considered “off the beaten path.”

Here are 4 ways to experience Venice in a less touristy way:

Visit St. Mark’s Basilica

It is said that in January 828, the relics believed to be the body of St. Mark (the Gospel Evangelist) was brought from Alexandria (Egypt) to Venice. This led to making St. Mark as the city’s patron saint. As a note, photography is not allowed inside the Basilica. Instead, to get prove to netizens that you went on holiday, take photos at St. Mark’s Square, which is right in front of the Basilica. But while you can pose with the pigeons, feeding them is banned, and fines are meted to those who ignore the ban.

Marvel at the Doge’s Palace

The Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) was the home of the Doge, the ruler of Venice. This was the seat of power and where important decisions concerning the political and public affairs of the Venetian Republic were made. When the Republic fell on 1797, Venice was subjected to French rule, then Austrian, and eventually, in 1866 when it became part of a united Italy. The Doge’s Palace was converted as a museum in 1923.

The hype about Gondolas

Street sweets

Gondolas are synonymous with Venice, but the traghetto is an alternative way to have the “gondola experience” without breaking your bank. It is also a public transport that looks almost exactly like a gondola, save for being ornately decorated. For €2, it is technically the “5th” way to cross the Grand Canal. Note that it is a shared ride so be prepared to stand in case it is almost full.

For €2 a scoop, it is easy to get hooked to mounds of colorful gelato. Or, take a sweet bite of the cannoli, a traditional Sicilian dessert.

Get lost

Traverse the alleys, cross arching bridges and be ready to be in a maze. Look for the Grand Canal to find your way back.

Indulge in a hearty Italian meal

They say you can’t leave Venice without having trying a classic Venetian dish: Spaghetti in Nero di Seppia, which is pasta with cuttlefish. The ink sack of the cuttlefish is used to create a deep black-coloured pasta sauce. The pasta noodles are handmade and not the typical dried pasta bought from supermarkets. The seafood ingredients are usually the restaurant’s fresh “catch of the day.”

Appreciate the wealth of art

Venice and its Lagoon were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987 for its unparalleled beauty. Apart from the city being already an architectural gem itself, it also has a vast collection of artworks. Its galleries and museums are a haven for art enthusiasts. Let the Bridge of Sighs leave you in awe

Located near St. Mark’s Square, this bridge is always full of tourists. So what's so special about this bridge? This bridge connects the Doge’s Palace and the New Prisons. Legend has it that the name came about when sighs of desperation were exhaled by captives crossing the bridge as they were taken down to their cells. They sighed because that was to be their final glimpse of the beauty of Venice.

Some of the art places to visit are: Ca’ D’Oro Gallerie (Golden House Gallery) – featuring art belonging to Baron Giorgio Franchetti. Gallerie dell’Accademia (Academy of Fine Arts) – Venice’s painting museum, which houses one of several classic Madonna-andchild paintings by Giovanni Bellini. Peggy Guggenheim Collection – Guggenheim was an American art dealer and collector from the 1930s-1950s. Her collection here includes the works by Picasso.

Venice in Under €500 for 2 Adults We stayed for 2 nights in Venice. It may be short and even with no gondolas and no pigeons, it was enough for us to experience its beauty. For this trip, we spent €470 (in Philippine Pesos (Php) 25850). Here is the breakdown: Cost in € Hotel with breakfast included at €140 per night 280 Water Bus at €20 40 Lunch Day 1 at €107 / 2 53 Dinner Day 1 at a fast food chain 16 Lunch Day 2 at a fast food chain 16 Dinner Day 2 from supermarket salamis, bread, cheese 10 Gelato, cannoli and other treats 15 Souvenirs for our families and friends 40 Total €470 To read more about Lorna’s travels, visit www.joeyslornawritesagain.weebly.com

All that Glitters is Hope (AND bumper-to-bumper taillights!)

T

o say that the Christmas season has set in on these Philippine Islands would be to state the very, very obvious – and, it would be to state the obvious more than a tad too late! Christmas fever, in fact, sets in as soon as the calendar rolls into the “-ber months’ – that’s just how Filipinos do it, and to rage against that machine would be an exercise in holiday humbuggery and flailing futility. Come September (sometimes, even as early as late August), carols fill the air and the airwaves – playing on-loop (ad nauseam), in fact, at malls across the country, blaring from jeepneys tuned-in to their favorite radio stations, and from your favorite sari-sari store at the street corner. Lights, Yule trees, nativity scenes, and all things Christmas creep up on us bit by bit, totally unmindful of Halloween (which, sadly, seems to lie in a Noel-shaped shadow). When festivity and faith collide Collectively, Filipinos are a very festive people. There are just about as many fiestas and local celebrations as there are islands, it would seem. There’s a fiesta for every patron saint, national hero, every holiday (religious or otherwise), a gamut of foundation days, feast days, birthdays, even death anniversaries – you name it, and we will deck the streets with banderitas, flags, and banners to celebrate and/or commemorate it. Then, we will whip out a trusty karaoke machine, blast the tunes and sing ‘til the wee hours, with booze and barbeque to boot. Add to that culturally ingrained pen-

By ANGIE DUARTE

chant for parties, a heaping helping of devout Catholicism, and you can just imagine the scale by which Christmas is feted in these parts. This is the season of the birth that matters most to all who call themselves Christian; as such, a party of epic proportions is always in order. And yes, there will be food and fanfare, music and merriment, games and gifts for everyone and their nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, family twice removed. Evolution of the glitterati Even just a cursory glance will clue you in on the fact that Christmas has evolved from its humble beginnings into a spectacle of sorts, truth be told. From the lowly manger scene that was the first Christmas, if you hold to the religious roots of the season, to today’s glitz and glitter, much has changed – so much so that some might say the season is now off-kilter. Commercialism has long crept in, and, with it, all the pitfalls of mindless, bottomless consumerism. What was once-heartfelt gift giving has become a touch more obligatory, bordering on burdensome. People spend, in excess, and enter the New Year harassed and in debt. It’s almost enough to make you want to crawl under the covers and sleep in until it’s all over – and, between the traffic-laden streets and crush of holiday-shopping humanity, who can blame you for wanting to? The Glitterati has come, and has choked out the joy, for many. A herald of hope But, beyond the frenzied fanfare and the outwardly ostentatious obligations,

Christmas, at its core, remains the herald of hope it was always meant to be. I remember a trip I took to Saipan last year, in early September. My daughter and I were having breakfast at the hotel restaurant, and I noticed instrumental Christmas carols playing softly from the pipedin speakers. I knew, without a doubt that there were Filipinos on the service team – and I wasn’t wrong. “Ma’am, it reminds us of home, and it makes our job easier,” the headwaiter told me, in the vernacular, when I commented on the music. A post-Super Typhoon Haiyan story likewise comes to mind. In the aftermath of the natural disaster, amidst a scene of rampant looting in the city of Tacloban, whose low-lying areas were among the hardest-hit, a lady scoured through the sundries section of a small supplies store. Everyone else fought over canned food items and such, but this lady clung on to a miniature, water-damaged Christmas tree she found in a corner of the shop. “Yes, my family needs food, but I am not going to fight over it. Because more than that, my family needs hope,” she recounted to a reporter, speaking in the dialect interspersed with sobbing. More recently, entering November, in the lobby of the building in which I work, I admired the Christmas tree, in passing, “Wow, Paskong-pasko na dito (it’s certainly Christmas-y in here!),” I said, to which the lady guard replied, rather longingly, “Ma’am, sana nga Pasko araw-araw (I wish it were Christmas every day).” I could sense the weariness in her voice – but I could also sense the longing

for better days. A merry, transformative Christmas Indeed, life is hard; even more so in the Philippines. And that is yet another statement of the obvious. People need hope to make it through – and therein lies the true glitter of Christmas. It is a glimmer of a better life, a sparkle of dreams and aspirations, a dose of happiness to help make bad days better. Somehow, I am reminded of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl, as she gazed through the window of a home not her own, and took solace in the warm glow of the fire and in the love of the family – none of which she could really feel, physically. That fire and that love could not warm her body, but it certainly warmed her spirit and gave comfort when she needed it most. I see the parallelism between that and people basking in the warmth of Christmas. Is this hope fleeting? Could be. It is merely an illusion? Perhaps. For, at the end of the season, not much changes, really. Not much, except for maybe a person’s outlook and drive to keep going. Who is anyone to take all this away? Besides, sometimes, a spark of renewed hope is all we need to bring on a blazing transformation. Let’s get back to the basics, shall we? There’s more power in the simple than we think. Amidst the hustle and bustle, the hassles and burdens of life in Manila, I, along with the entire Expat team, wish us all a merry, transformative, transformational; Christmas season – whether in August or December, or whatever other time of year.

BE Grand, and South Palms Resorts invites you to be in the palms of Bohol By RICHARD RAMOS

T

o BE or not to BE, the answer lies in your Palms. Savor the treat to the senses, spoil the soul for holidays do not last forever. Head down to South Palm, and BE Grand in Panglao, as these twin resorts make the choice for a tropical holiday in Bohol a nobrainer with its combination of chic waterfront, peak local hospitality and luxury for the picking. BE Degustation Apart from all the contemporary comforts you’d expect from a luxury beach resort, degustatory treats abound. Try BE Grand’s Food Hall and be amazed with its menu selections. Al fresco, or by the pool – eats all good. For more dining options, there’s also the Bridge, Swim-up Bar, and Monkey Bar, which all serve top notch comfort fare and refreshments. For farm-to-table cuisine, drop by The Boathouse, while The Lune is the perfect place for sunset views, cocktails, and intimate chats. I stayed in BE Grand’s corner suite – a spread that could accommodate an entire family, fitted with My room was a corner suite that could accommodate a family, fitted with an executive table with swivel chair, hallways, two TVs, a

living room… the works! Quite possibly the largest hotel room I have ever stayed in, and made leaving a rough endeavor. South Palms delight South Palms boasts a nine-hectare spread that still is Bohol’s first and longest sand sprawl. Formerly known as the Bohol Beach Club, there are now more suites and greens, lending the resort a new ambiance. The sand was as fine as I recalled from my past visits, while the second swimming pool was also a welcome amenity. Hammocks sway all over the place, perfect for 41 winks max. Add on the chirping birds, gentle breeze, rolling tides, and it led to the best outdoor naps I’ve ever had. I was with my family during my recent stay at South Palms, and suffice to say, we had a blast – playing foosball and billiards, beachcombing, eating, and swimming. The highlight was probably when our two kids went kayaking for the first time ever. Lots of laughs reverberated as the kayak capsized, with my kids laughing even louder! The Oceanica Seafood Restaurant was a gustatory hotspot that serves a host of culinary delights. My attention was drawn to its Mongolian barbecue buffet spread, which came with several enticing side dishes. I was almost tempted to try it all out until I remembered that a set dinner was prepared for us

Wise choices Yes, BE Grand Resort Bohol and South Palms Resort are two of the most comfortable and welcoming properties in Bohol. One is the upstart new kid on the block, while the other is a highly upgraded landmark. One is a millennial, the other is a veteran. Both offer decidedly pricey rates, but are always open to lowered rates during the off-season. Departing was bittersweet, as long-lasting memories have already been made. Resort staffers have proven to be quite adept rendering excellent service, adding intangibles like always going the extra mile to ensure guests have a memorable stay.

The Champagne Room An expression like no other For gatherings meant to be beyond the ordinary By TIMOTHY JAY IBAY

S

ome of the most important conversations in the country’s history, the most crucial deals, and the most lasting memories have been made within the fabled walls of the Manila Hotel. And through its 105-year existence, it has continually made enduring impressions on both locals and tourists, exhibiting a knack for elevating the most memorable moments in their lives. The city frequently makes it hard to understand Manila’s appeal, but the Manila Hotel, and the historic area surrounding it, put most of what makes it endearing front and center. Taste for the finer things Equally renowned as the hotel is its premier restaurant, the Champagne Room, which has likewise played a vital role in the rich history of Manila’s social scene. Its discriminating diners, over the years, translate to a litany of the country’s who’s who – from politicians and foreign dignitaries, to executives, and the cognoscenti of the finer things. The Champagne Room has managed to sustain its timeless beauty, and its stature as the fine dining restaurant of choice for the most discerning guests who put a premium on the blend of exquisitely prepared dishes, excellent service, and the understated ambience of luxury. With its lavish décor that features crystal palm trees and tasseled ceiling fixtures, paired with top-notch service, and sumptuous culinary creations – the Champagne Room has come to embody the Manila Hotel’s penchant for providing guests with only the finest experiences that often lead to lasting memories. Epicurean delights The cold and hot appetizers set the tone for a dinner beyond the ordinary with varied offerings such as the Beef Carpaccio, Lobster Tail in Zucchini Ribbon, Pan-seared Foie Gras

and Mango, Escargot and French Onion Soup. The main course offers refined palates exquisite choices that include Magret de Canard (roast duck breast on passion fruit-pommery mustard sauce with coconut banana fritters and market vegetables); Veal Medallion Australia; Roast US Prime Beef Rib; Organicus Tomahawk, Brandt; Australian Wagyu; Roast Lamb Rack in Thyme Juice; Seafood Medley, and King Prawns with delectable sides. And to cap off a night of gastronomy, new desserts include Baked Alaska, Truffle Crème Brulee and Hot Soufflé. The Champagne Room is an epicure delight with its numerous culinary choices, making for an exceptional dining experience with its organic and freshly sourced farmto-table, sea-to-fork plethora of indulgent selections offered in its new menu and the featured monthly Degustation sets. Deserved notoriety This writer was only recently made privy to the distinct experience afforded by the Champagne Room – and that’s exactly what I found – that it was an experience. For as delectable as each and every item was on that night’s degustation menu, it was the commingling of the elements of the renowned fine dining restaurant that stood out the most. The intimate setting environed by the unmistakable elegance and style left us no doubt as to how the Champagne Room continues to enjoy its well-earned notoriety. An otherwise nondescript night was turned on its head as one to remember, as the choice for where a future special occasion needed to be held was made crystal clear.
