Because it's 2016, you didn't witness something if you don't catch it with your phone. The Festival of Lights – a spectacular lights and sounds show – is the centerpiece of Ayala Land’s two-month long Christmas spectacle that aims to bring holiday cheer to everyone. It runs daily, every 30 minutes from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. until Jan. 8.

‘More Fun in the Philippines’ no more New tourism campaign to cost PhP650-M

t’s no longer more fun in the Philippines. Well, at least when it comes to the tourism campaign, as last week, reports came out that McCann Worldgroup Philippines would be in charge of conceptualizing the country’s new tourism campaign. According to multiple reports, McCann, which won the bid to be the DOT’s advertising and promotions partner for a year, will have PhP650 (US$13.2) million to work with. “The PhP650 million, that’s not only for the tagline itself. The PhP650 million is inclusive of all the media placements from all over the world,” Tourism undersecretary for advocacy and public affairs Katherine de

Castro was quick to explain. “The production of commercials, billboards, radio jingles, if there’s any, even the design of the website are part of the PhP650 million.” De Castro also pointed out that neighboring countries like Thailand have a bigger budget for their tourism campaigns. She likewise mentioned that the Philippine tourism industry is responsible for 10 percent of the country’s GDP. As noted by a CNN Philippines report, the Philippines’ tourism budget in 2016 of US$75 million is exponentially less than countries like China (US$292 billion) and South Korea (US$25 billion). Curiously,

By TIMOTHY JAY IBAY

the Department of Budget and Management slashed the Tourism Department’s budget from US$75 million in 2016 to US$50 million for 2017. As a note, the Philippines had five million international tourist arrivals in 2015. Meanwhile, Southeast Asian neighbors Thailand had 29.8 million; Malaysia 25 million; while city-state Singapore had 12 million. nother reason for Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) to set up shop in the Philippines was added as Filipinos have been found to be the happiest employees – across all job levels (from fresh graduates to managerial levels) – in the region. According to the 2016 Job Happiness Index Report headed by JobStreet.com, the Filipinos have a happiness average of 6.25, leading the way among seven Asian countries surveyed. Rounding out the seven-nation list were Indonesia – second with 6.16; Thailand, third with 5.74; Hong Kong, fourth with 5.54; Vietnam fifth at 5.48; Malaysia at sixth with 5.22, and Singapore last at 5.09. A total of 50,000 respondents from the seven countries were interviewed online over the period of June to July 2016, which included a total of 12,796 Filipino repage 3 spondents.

Regional youth confab Cebu resort to host Ms. Universe swimsuit tilt hails Asean By RICHARD RAMOS

hile locals may have seen the last of the annual Ms. Cebu pageant (at least for next year), the general public still has good reason to cheer as Cebu is due to host the Ms. Universe 2016 swimsuit competition on January 17, 2017 at the JPark Island Resort and Waterpark. This surprising bit of news was revealed in a press gathering hosted by the resort in Mactan Island as top JPark officials, led by chair and president Justin Uy, expressed delight and confidence in Cebu’s capabilities in hosting the swimsuit event. “This is our chance to showcase Cebu as a premiere tourist destination. We have partnered with other local government units, the Department of Tourism, and some government offices. We encourage more business entities to help sponsor the event for our beloved Cebu,” Uy declared. He added that JPark is hosting the event for a 10-hour period, which starts off with the “Cebu Festive Lunch.” Among the local delicacies to be served are lechon (roasted pig), danggit (dried fish), chicharon, chorizo, and dried mangoes. Other events for the day would include a general assembly, a gala dinner with fashion show, site visits, and a post-party event. To clarify matters, the event is only a presentation, not selection nor coronation of the winning candidate. Arthur Lo, JPark corporate liaison officer, said nearly half the candidates would stay

overnight in Cebu, while the rest would visit Davao, Manila, and Ilocos. Ticketed events, including room rates and packages, have yet to be finalized as of press time. He added that only private funds are being used for the event, crediting Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo, former Ilocos Gov. Chavit Singson and his daughter, as the main reasons why Cebu was chosen to host the swimsuit event. “For our part, our initial investment will exceed over US$1 million, to be spent for renovating the facilities, gathering the logistics, manpower, etc. But we are willing to spend since we have the best facilities in Mactan. Our staff is also eager to help and volunteer,” Lo added. Uy furthered that they aim to showcase Cebu’s best side to the world, as a tourist investment destination with lots of fun activities and remarkable attractions. Formerly named Imperial Palace Resort and Waterpark, J Park has adapted its present name upon the entry of Uy and his new resort management team two years ago.

ver a hundred young non-governmental organization (NGO) leaders representing over 75 organizations across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) convened at Movenpick Hotel in Mactan Island, Cebu for the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) workshop last Nov. 16 to 19. The four-day “Generation: Go NGO” workshop, funded by the US Embassy in the Philippines and Cultural Vistas, brought together the NGO leaders to train them on how to strengthen their organizations, craft their messages, broaden their support, and achieve greater impact. Combining hands-on activities, lectures and simulations, the workshop provided a comprehensive overview of what’s necessary to make a difference in Asean’s NGO sector in the 2020s, with special focus on the core function areas of: capacity-building, governance, organizational development, community engagement, financial management, and outcomes-focused evaluation. In her opening speech, US Ambassador to the Asean Nina Hachigian encouraged the delegates to share their knowledge and understand their causes in order to fully absorb the Asean spirit and camaraderie. “The best days are still ahead. You are the young future of the region due to your people-centered programs and your passion to make a difference. You also give equal opportunities to women and the disadvantaged,” she declared during a beachside party held at the Movenpick Hotel. The ambassador also mentioned the

highly integrated economics, the free movement of students, plus access to the internet which can only lead to greater heights for YSEALI. Regarding future plans, she declared the holding of six more workshops within the region next year, plus the establishment of grants and international fellow exchanges to broaden cultural understanding and fellowships within the region. Khairul Azmi, 26, a delegate from Brunei, said he expects to know more about NGO work, people empowerment, and working with each other. The event also afforded cultural presentations and skits of each foreign delegation to the delight and amusement of the audience. Launched in 2013, the YSEALI is the US government’s signature program to strengthen leadership development and networking in Southeast Asia. Through a variety of programs and engagements, YSEALI seeks to build the leadership capabilities of youth in the region, strengthen ties between the US and Southeast Asia, and nurture an Asean community of leaders who can work across borders to address common challenges. Ambassador Hachigian was sworn in as the second US Ambassador to the Asean on Sept. 19, 2014. In her capacity as Chief of the US Mission to Asean, she is responsible for working with Asean member states and other stakeholders to advance US interests in a peaceful, prosperous, and integrated Southeast Asia that supports human dignity and a rules-based regional order.

The latest happenings in the Philippines' 'Queen City of the South' Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino staged several large-scale events in the last three months, the first of which feted Pink October as Breast Cancer Month. Several cancer survivors and personalities modeled pink creations at the hotel lobby. There was also a bridal fair featuring the upscale talents and services of Cebu’s top wedding suppliers and eventologists. A much-anticipated event was the Victoria Secret Lingerie Show at a little-known Waterfront function room. It was followed by a fashion show for all ages featuring over 40 of Cebu’s top mannequins and was capped by a grandiose Christmas tree lighting ceremony and dinner for media friends and guests. Plantation Bay Resort & Spa celebrated its 20th fruitful year of existence with a lavish beach party with past resort employees, loyal clientele, dignitaries, and media personalities. The veteran Firelights Band dished out timeless melodies that had guests swaying to the music amidst a sumptuous buffet and glamorous food servers. Highlighting the event

was the launch of a coffee table book written by resort owner Manny Gonzales. The book dwelt on resort personalities, facilities, and memorable happenings. An explosive colorful fireworks display ensured that the event would forever be etched in the memories of the attendees.

‘More Fun in the Philippines’...from page 1 that the slogan, while well liked, failed to translate to tourist arrivals. According to the study, 65 percent of respondents from the European market liked the slogan “It’s More Fun in the Philippines,” but only 26 percent intended to visit. The trend was the same in North America, where 72 percent liked the campaign, but only 45 percent expressed interest in coming to the Philippines. The DOT, under then Secretary Ramon Jimenez, launched the “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” campaign in 2012. It was widely regarded as the most successful campaign of the DOT. In June of this year, it won bronze at brand campaign award-giving body – AsiaPacific Tambuli Awards 2016. It also edged companies from Australia, Pakistan and India

for the “Best of the Decade” category—an honor to the most outstanding campaigns from 2005-2015. Change concerns Tourism stakeholders expressed concerns when new Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo revealed plans to introduce a new campaign slogan last August. As reported by the Philippine Star, Cebu Tour Association of Tour Operators president Edilberto Mendoza Jr. said that it would be difficult for the country to start introducing another slogan to the international market again. Teo also admitted that a United Nations World Tourism Organization official told her that the current campaign is already a good

slogan and questioned the need to change it, suggesting instead to just “upscale” it. “Rest assured, it will still connote the fun part of the Philippines, but we will be more specific. We would also be more focused on the experiences that tourists can have when they come to the Philippines,” de Castro said. Last October, when asked about reports that killings brought about by President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs were scaring off tourists, Teo disagreed.

“There’s still an increase in tourist arrivals,” Teo was quoted in a CNN Philippines report. “Tourists still come in spite of that, so for me, it has not been affected.” According to the DOT, they are on track to reach six million tourist arrivals for 2016, having reached the 3.8-million mark last July. As noted by the report, tourism revenues increased by nearly 10.5 percent from a year ago to PhP21.2 billion, with Koreans bringing in six billion of that total.

Filipinos—happiest employees...from page 1 Expatriate managers and supervisors in the country have always expressed their general fondness and appreciation for Filipino workers for their English-speaking skills, job dedication, and positive attitude. Local level Cebu leads the way in the Philippines, posting a 6.38 average job satisfaction rating among 518 respondents, topping other laborrich areas such as CALABARZON (Calamba, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) with 6.26, Metro Manila with 6.14, and the former Negros Island region with 6.09 average. Cebu’s job happiness index is also higher than the national average with 76 of every 100 Cebuano employees claiming to be at least neutral to extremely happy with their jobs. The national job happiness index is 73, tying with CALABARZON. Metro Manila and Negros Island Region are next with 71 and 67, respectively. On the subject of tenure, Cebuano employees who are less than a year into their

jobs topped job happiness, followed by those with three to less than five years stay in their present jobs. The happiest employees by industry are still headed by Cebuanos, this time among the province’s government employees at 7.57. Those working in Cebu’s retail and banking industries complete the top three with 7.13 and 6.69 respectively. Top factors causing job happiness are good relationship with colleagues, convenient work location, and working with a conducive schedule. Top factors causing job unhappiness are poor salary, poor benefits/perks, and poor management and leadership team. Factors in increasing job happiness are salary raises, new jobs, and additional training or further education. JobStreet.com is Asia’s leading job marketplace. In Cebu, the company has been servicing the employers of Visayas and Mindanao for the past 11 years.

ay goodbye to uncomfy shoes, and say hello to chic style and comfort this holiday season with Dune London’s Autumn-Winter 2016 collection. Women have been known to sacrifice comfort, for the sake of fashion. Think high heels that leave you staggering and wobbling about, at day’s end, blister-causing pinchy shoes that bite into your skin, to name some common perils faced by the uber fashion-forward set. With the holidays just around the corner, you can expect more feet to fall victim to those killer heels – what with a gamut of fancy parties, looming in the notso-distant horizon. Save your feet from party woes with Dune’s latest collection of women’s footwear. Block party Renowned for its stylish yet sensible block heel, British brand Dune showcases sleek modernity and sassy style in its new collection. Block heeled shoes need not be boring or frumpy – Dune highlights these easy-to-wear shoes in a range of materials and colors to liven up your holiday outfit. Best of all, you can wear bock heeled shoes for hours, on end, without compromise to your feet. The party can go on, and your feet won’t mind one bit! Kick up your boots Boots are likewise big in this new collection, and are another attractive option for the season. Boot heights range from ankle to overthe-knee, and come in a variety of deep, rich colors, such as velvety berry hues and vibrant electric blues. Dramatic hardware, cleated tread soles and burnished metallics enhance classic brogue and ankle boot profiles. That ‘heeling’ touch Women who cannot seem to walk away from a pair of heels need not fret – Dune has options that will not only look pretty on your feet, but will also fit pretty well. Heel details are a focal point this season – from spikey kitten, to high block cylinder shapes coated in foil, and jewel-clad platform heels covered

in metallic glitter – Dune offers that “heeling” touch you seek. A flair for drama Taking its inspirations from Autumn’s palette and natural dramatic flair, Dune brings forth a maximalist look this season. Bolder prints and textures, rich brocade fabrics, liquid metal finishing, and opulent velvets pull the collection into an era of dark, mysterious glamor. More intricate fabric details – such as gold tapestry, alluring winter florals, and glossy black patent leathers – heighten the drama later in the season. Satin is likewise a key texture, with elegant ribbon trims wrapped over pointed-toe shoes and ballerina ties adding interest to flats. All in the bag And what’s a great pair of shoes without a bag, to match? A muted palette of pewter, navy and warm grey is splashed across drawstring bucket bags, winged totes and saffiano shoppers for a fresh, understated autumn look. Day bags become more adaptable, where top-handle totes feature detachable front envelope clutches for additional multiwear options. Key pieces include oversized shearling fur shoppers, pocket detail duffle bags, curved saddle styles and fold-over mixed material clutches in an assortment of khaki suede and forest green leathers. Patchwork remains strong in the collection, as well. For evening options, mini-bags are all the rage this Autumn-Winter 2016. Micro-mini pieces are adorned with statement jewels, studs, glitters and polished patent finishes. Cross-body, trapeze and bucket bag styles are reduced to miniature proportions in an array of berry red, navy and cosmetic pink tones. Say hello to Dune this holiday season! Dune London is located at Central Square in Bonifacio High Street Central, Ayala Center Cebu, Bonifacio High Street, Estancia in Capitol Commons, Greenbelt 5, Rustan’s Makati and Shangri-La Plaza East Wing.

Hey, Handsome: A whole new world of flavors in BGC Welcome to the fantastical culinary world of Peranakan cuisine Text and photos by CHING DEE

F

rom the team behind crowd favorite Your Local in the central business district of Makati, Peranakan cuisine takes center stage at Hey Handsome! in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. With the success of Your Local — which earned them a spot as the sole Philippine restaurant in the Conde Nast “Best Restaurants in the World” list — no one would’ve batted an eye had executive chef Nicco Santos been satisfied with that. But he decided to open Hey Handsome! with his business partner Charles Paw (of Hole in the Wall at Century City Mall, Makati) as an opportunity to promote his dedicated and competent culinary team. According to Chef Nicco, the name "Hey Handsome" came from the expression of uncles and aunties serving in hawker stalls in Singapore. They often call the people waiting in line, "hey handsome!" to ease the pangs of waiting for food. Bold, fresh, and oozing with robust tones, Peranakan cuisine is a glorious marriage of Malaysian, Singaporean, Chinese and Indonesian flavors. Their main dishes are definitely worth a try, and often contains four to five components perfectly combined in a plate. Bebek Penyet is a deep-fried white peking duck with a decadently savory sauce with just the right amount of sweetness. It’s almost reminiscent of the Philippines’ adobo, but Hey Handsome’s modern take on this Peranakan dish has authentic ingredients like nasi ulam and achar. The whole dish is rounded off with a rich duck egg. Another must-try entrée is their Buah Keluak. This dish is made with slow-cooked

goat meat, ground buah keluak nuts, nasi ulam, spicy and savory sambal matah, and the most delicious homemade belachan kerupek (shrimp crackers) you’ll ever try. Their fusion desserts are also something you cannot miss. Phoebe Punla's Homemade Yogurt is this light and guilt-free dessert that has Alphonse Sotero's black sesame tuile and a surprise at the bottom: black sesame paste that perfectly compliments the creamy yogurt. Kueh Dadar is a trilogy of delicate pink crepes stuffed with subtly sweet coconut (imagine pan de coco but tastier) and served with galangal cream, galangal powder, and Cadena de Amor blossoms. This is a sweet union of Asian flavors in one plate. Donkey Punch, one of their signature drinks made by Chef Nicco’s resident barman Jom Calangian (you can also find him at Your Local) is a refreshing cocktail containing lengkuas, lemongrass, passion fruit, and elderflower. “These are the flavors I love and we hope more people will explore these bold combinations,” Chef Nicco tells Expat. “In a way, we hope to educate [people] about these very diverse flavor profiles that work really well together.” Hey Handsome is located at Net Park, 5th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. They are open Monday to Saturday, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. For reservations and inquiries, call (02) 946-3815. Check them out on Instagram @HandsomeCome. Pastadito: Authentic, homecooked Italian in bustling Makati By VIA BAROMA

T

he burgeoning dining destination that is Poblacion, Makati recently added another player to the scene with authentic Italian outfit Pastadito Italian Restaurant and Deli. Founded on their burning passion for downright good food, Pastadito owners Eleanor and Roberto Fazzini pride themselves on delivering true Italian fare at prices that won’t break the bank. “Since we are a distributor and we are also an importer, our price is a little bit more reasonable and not very expensive compared to other Italian restaurants. Second, we can introduce anytime a new recipe,” Roberto told Expat, referring to their 21 years of experience with Italfood Distribution, Inc.—a company distributing Italian food products, equipment and wines. “Our dishes are more authentic [because] we use all Italian ingredients. We also use recipes and ingredients which are not available in other restaurants,” Eleanor added. Despite having three chefs working the Pastadito kitchen, Eleanor is very hands-on when it comes to preparing the dishes, bringing her home-cooked style, which translates to a cuisine she describes as simple, straightforward, yet done with a lot of care. “[One of the] plates that bring a smile to your lips is the Spaghetti Pomodoro because

the simplicity always wins.” This warm simplicity is carried over to the restaurant’s interiors, which features minimalist furniture, as well as ornaments from the owners’ travels that fuses into a contemporary space eliciting a homey vibe, perfect for those on the lookout for a relaxing meal. Expat recommends Pastadito’s signature dish – Spaghetti Allo Scoglio (Seafood Spaghetti) – is given its distinct flavor by the juices the mussels, clams and shrimps release as they’re cooked. It is generally served spicy, but more sensitive palates could readily request for a milder version of this comfort fare. Their Cordon Bleu Chicken Sandwich packs a healthy, delicious punch being made with white meat and mozzarella; while a couple of other must-try’s are their Ziti Al Porcini E Tartufo—a Ziti pasta with Porcini Mushroom and Truffle; and Pork Saltimbocca in Marsala Sauce—a popular Italian dish topped with prosciutto and basil

partnered with Italian pasta rice. And of course, at Pastadito, you have your fill of what else – pasta, with at least 19 different types of pasta available any day of the week. They also offer a variety of other dishes like Italian cold cuts, soups, salads, and a slew of beef, pork and chicken-based mains to complement their pasta offerings. Last quick tip, all of the fore mentioned goes absolutely perfect with wine. You’re welcome! Pastadito Italian Restaurant and Deli is located at 4984 P. Guanzon, Barangay Poblacion Makati, just in front of A Venue Mall.

Inagiku and the art of premium Japanese dining

J

apanese cuisine is a world of gastronomic delights, and fans of the fare across the globe are captivated by its refined elegance in an explosion of varying flavors. The Philippines is no exception. Throughout the years, the country has witnessed the mushrooming of Japanese restaurants of all shapes and sizes. But from the plethora of brands, Inagiku has managed to stand its ground as the destination for premium Japanese dining with its principles deeply rooted in 150 years of art and cuisine. Inagiku's growth was a gradual, yet a resilient one. Inagiku may have started its humble beginnings as a tempura restaurant in Asakusa, Japan, but its principle of quality and rich flavors are brand characteristics that sustained it through the years. This is the reason for Inagiku’s prestige today, catering to high profile guests such as diplomats, celebrities, politicians, and business leaders. It was only in 1973 that Inagiku branched out internationally to selected countries such as Singapore, China, France, and the Philippines. “It is a great honor to have Inagiku in Makati Shangri-La, Manila. The signature Shangri-La service together with Inagiku’s dedication to quality provides a timeless experience of fine Japanese dining,” said Alain Borgers, general manager of Makati ShangriLa and area manager of Shangri-La hotels and resorts in the Philippines. Inagiku has been operating for 18 years now with Executive Chef Wataru Hikawa and Japanese Manager Yoshio Ishikawa at the helm of the premium brand. A few years ago, Chef Hikawa was hailed

the "Best Japanese Chef in Asia outside of Japan". With his rigorous training and 28 years of work experience in notable restaurants in Japan and Singapore, Chef Hikawa’s culinary prowess allows Inagiku diners to taste only the finest Japanese dishes. Chef Hikawa takes pride in his Kaiseki selections, a favorite of loyal patrons. Kaiseki is a traditional multi-course Japanese dining that has, in modern times, evolved into an art form, which balances the taste, texture, appearance, and colors of the dishes. The fresh seasonal ingredients that are flown from Japan are paramount in the food preparation. For his part, Ishikawa has served five-star hotels since 1988, and has made Inagiku his home since 2000. “Authenticity of a Japanese restaurant is dictated by three things: culinary knowledge from the home country, years of experience, and simply, a Japanese chef," said Ishikawa. “I believe in the principles of Shangri-La and Inagiku. Chef Hikawa and I help each other in creating a remarkable experience for every guest.” “Inagiku’s secret is our patron’s trust. Despite competitors left and right, our guests always come back for Inagiku always meets or even exceeds expectations.” Inagiku is located at the mezzanine of Makati Shangri-La and is

Mangan! Must-try spots in Angeles City’s foodie landscape Text and photos by CHING DEE

espite numerous delectable regional dishes in our 7,107 islands, Pampanga is still best known as the culinary capital of the Philippines. So, we hit the road and headed to Angeles City — Pampanga’s city of angels — to taste authentic Capampangan cuisine as well as new additions to its culinary landscape, as suggested by our extra special food guide: celebrity chef Sau del Rosario. Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy at Sisig San Andres St., Angeles City The late and great Aling Lucing invented the addictive concoction we now know and love as sisig, but beyond her kitchen, there’s another must-try place to experience Pampanga’s signature dish. Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy at Sisig is a no-frills joint along San Andres St., but do not let the humble façade and plastic chairs dissuade

you. When we visited Mila’s on a Thursday night, it was packed with diners — despite the power outage that hit the city that night. As their name suggests, Mila’s is famous for Tokwa’t Baboy (fried tofu and chopped pork with a seasoned soy-vinegar sauce), a staple in drinking sessions anywhere in the Philippines. And of course, their Sisig (grilled and chopped pork face — yes, face) is a must-try. Served on a sizzling plate, the pork is just the right amount of charred when it gets to your table. Devoid of bells and whistles, Mila’s sisig keeps the Capampangan way alive: tasty, simple, and deliciously addictive. Make sure to also try Mila’s Tocino BBQ (tangy and sweet grilled cured pork) and Chef Sau’s personal favorite, Mila’s Beef Caldereta.

Café Fleur Miranda St., Angeles City After you’ve tried Pampanga’s classic fare, head to Café Fleur for some “avant-garde Capampangan” dishes. Conceptualized and opened by our food guide, Chef Sau, Café Fleur is the culmination of his travels and training abroad. His quaint and chic restaurant — located in the beautifully restored 1898 Narciso home in the heritage district — features dishes highlighting the familiar and nostalgic flavors of Pampanga, mixed with his FrenchAsian flair. Apart from Café Fleur, the ancestral home also houses Babo and Leh-Leh, two other concept restaurants by Chef Sau, and managed by business partner Chloe Cauguiran. Café Fleur is a foodie haven, so make sure to come back several times to try their Capampangan Tamales, Crispy Okoy and Shrimp,

Tinapa Mousse (addictive), Chef Sau's signature Macadamia Kare-Kare with Crispy Pork Belly (as sinfully delicious as it sounds), and any cake they have in the stand. And I mean, ANY CAKE. Just last month, a few days after his birthday, Chef Sau opened his newest restaurant in the city – 25 Seeds. Catch chef Sau’s specially made dish exclusively for Expat Travel & Lifestyle magazine’s “Urban Revival” issue. Coming to news stands soon! Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwich Eatery Jesus St., Angeles City Pampanga is definitely more than sisig and local fare. Angeles City is also home to a vibrant array of foreign-themed restaurants. Just behind Café Fleur is a restaurant with an industrial feel that offers authentic Vietnamese cuisine simply called Banh Mi Viet-

namese Sandwich Eatery. Created by former Nobu New York chef Rex Soriano and his Vietnamese wife, Banh Mi offers tasty Vietnamese fare — and Chef Rex’s experience at the prestigious Nobu New York leaves no wonder to the extraordinary nature of their offerings. Make sure to try their Goi Gah (fresh chopped salad with chicken and egg noodles), Pho Bo (beef pho with the works), BBQ Pork Banh Mi (BBQ pork with pickled vegetables in a baguette), and fresh Spring Rolls with their lip-smacking roasted peanut sauce. If you’re looking for a place to walk off the calories you’ve devoured in Angeles, this next's one's the perfect place. Museo ng Kasaysayang Panlipunan ng Pilipinas Sto. Entierro cor. Sitting near the center of the heritage district, the Museo ng Kasaysayang Panlipunan ng Pilipinas (Museum of Philippine Social

History) opened in August 2015. The museum is housed in the Pamintuan Mansion, built by Mariano Pamintuan and Valentina Torres in 1890 as a wedding gift to their son, Florentino. According to its website, it “provides a glimpse of Filipino social history in the past and today. It offers an exciting panorama of Filipino life and culture, before and today, that uniquely describe the Filipino.” To date, it has nine well-curated galleries about Filipino life, spanning from the typical Filipino dining room and kitchen to the enigmatic Philippine mythological creatures, to architectural styles across the country. Walk-ins are welcome. To arrange group visits, call (045) 304-4042 or email mpshnhcp@gmail.com. One day in Angeles City is definitely not enough to experience the best it has to offer and a tour around the province will reveal more culinary treasures than one can expect, but if you’re looking for a good place to start this delicious and full-filling journey, you can never go wrong with the city of angels.

R

egular shoppers of premier Philippine retail outlet Rustan’s know that they can look forward to three certainties when at their favorite merchandise wonderland. Firstly, they know that quality awaits them, since Rustan’s carries only the finest of local and imported brands. Secondly, they anticipate the excellent service, for such is the hallmark of the Rustan’s shopping experience. And thirdly, they know they are in for an incomparable in-store experience. From simple yet savvy promotional demos and well-thought out merchandising displays, to grandiose events and elaborate store window showcases – Rustan’s most certainly knows how to pamper its customers. Such is true most especially at Christmastime; the season often regarded as “the most wonderful time of the year.” Christmas is a highly anticipated holiday, this side of the North Pole. Carols fill the air, lights deck busy city streets, and the gift shopping frenzy begins as soon as the 1st of September rolls around. Among the signs that Christmas is around the bend is the unveiling of Rustan’s Christmas window showcase. Year after year – for many years, to date – the retail giant lovingly puts together stunning Christmas vignettes in each of its windows. As an

added treat, the Tantoco family, founders and proprietors of the family-run business, plays host to an intimate “Noche Buena” for members of the media, family, friends, and special guests, with special performances, sumptuous food, and Yuletide cheer abound, to kickoff the season. For the first time, however, Rustan’s held a grand unveiling of their iconic windows along Ayala Avenue. The displays are stunning collections of majestic and fanciful Christmas décor interspersed with fashion. The grand reveal – complete with music, street performers, ballerinas, and a rain of tinsel confetti – made the annual Christmas affair even more meaningful. This celebration was led by the Tantoco family members including CEO Zenaida Tantoco, President Donnie Tantoco, SSI Group President Anton Huang, VP for Merchandising Home Division Marilen Tantoco, Member of the Board Maritess Tantoco Enriquez, Marketing Communications Head Dina Tantoco, VP for Store Planning and Expansion Michael Huang, Senior Buyer for Men’s Division Paolo Lobregat, and Administration Manager Paolo Tantoco. EXHIBITS

•Marco Ruben Malto’s Susmaryosep! Nov. 27 to Dec. 31; Sining Kamalig, Upper Ground Floor, Ali Mall, Araneta Center, Quezon City; for more information, email art@worldexperience.ph In the painting exhibit Susmaryosep!, artist and University of the Philippines Fine Arts professor Marco Ruben T. Malto II resorts to puns in offering new meanings to colloquial lines or phrases. Malto’s latest works mirror widespread images surrounding the country brought about by current social, political and economic events that often prompt people to cry Susmaryosep! (a local term meaning "Jesus, Mary, Joseph") The artist also features how the Filipino faithful’s devotions to popular Catholic religious icons and the beliefs that they represent continue to manifest themselves in these troubled times. Gallery hours are from 11am to 9pm, daily.

•UNTITLED by Christina Quisumbing Ramilo Ongoing until Dec. 17; The Inner Room, Artinformal, 277 Connecticut St., Greenhills East, Mandaluyong City Christina Quisumbing Ramilo’s UNTITLED centers on the displaced functionality of selected and neglected found objects that linger in our households despite their diminished presence and use. Phonebooks, the bible, a dictionary, documents and expired currency fill spaces in our lives regardless of their actual purpose. Like specters of recent pasts, the pieces remain familiar though already outdated and obsolete. An element of play is employed to the anonymity of these items that stem from the changing times. Paper, the underlying thread that ties all the works together, is made to go through a physical transformative process of deconstruction and construction, destruction and creation. Books, sheets and pages are shredded to its pulp then meticulously and tediously put back together. Its segments are reconfigured to its original state with merely traces of indecipherable text. A series of drawn impressions are paired to these objects. Spontaneously imprinted, each stroke extends from the nondescript markings found in the deconstructed pages. This time, as it emerges from the artist’s own hand and subconscious, the drawings remain indistinct and scrawled. With titles, forms, words and images left only as clues, it imparts glimpses into the value that was once held. A form of palimpsest, there persists a sense of nostalgia for these objects but also confronts emancipation from its previous contexts and significance.

•Last Full Show by Danilo Dalena Dec. 10 to Mar. 4; Cultural Center of the Philippines; CCP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City; for more information, contact (02) 832-1125 local 1504/1505, or (02) 8323702, email ccp.exhibits@gmail.com, or visit www.culturalcenter.gov.ph The Cultural Center of the Philippines presents a milestone exhibition by renowned artist Danilo Dalena to cap off its Visual Arts program for 2016. Characteristic of Dalena’s signature affinity with the scatological and repellant, what could be of particular interest is his yet unfinished series of images referencing unseemly acts and antics in seedy movie houses. While loosely taking on the structure of cinema with establishing sequences, transitions, freeze frames, and denouements, Last Full Show is posited as a grand unfolding rather than definitive account. The exhibit may be viewed from Tuesday to Sunday,10 a.m. to 6p.m. Admission is free.

Them shiny shoes By ANGIE DUARTE

F

irst off – yes, I do know that “Those” is the proper word choice for the title of this installment of Manic in Manila. I plead poetic license. I love poetic license. As I write this, I am reminded of an incident a few months back, which involved my favorite pair of shiny, patent black Oxford shoes. But, before anything else, the back story. I am generally clumped in the “foreigner” category, on account of physical attributes that don’t necessarily fit the mold of the general public in the Philippines. While I am predominantly Spanish, by heritage and citizenship, I was born and raised here; as such, I not only speak the vernacular, I speak the vernacular of the streets. My command of Filipino is pretty darn good; so much so that I have acquired the moniker “The Fake White Chick in the City” – because as soon as I open my mouth to speak, everyone else is left with their mouths wide open, gaping in utter amazement bordering on shock. Back to the story of my shiny shoes and I. It happened one day, in the heart

of Makati’s central business district, where I was approached by a young street urchin selling sampaguita flower leis. I had just stepped off the sidewalk to cross a busy street when the young lad – I would say he was no more than six years old – walked alongside me and tugged at my arm with the usual sales pitch: “Ma’am, buy flowers Ma’am, for foods.” Before I could even say anything, however, another lad – a tad older than the first – quickly made his way to my side, and frantically grabbed his companion, as he chided him thusly: “Huwag mong kulitin yung Amerikana! Pulis ‘yan! Tingnan mo sapatos, o! (Don’t pester the American lady! She’s a policewoman! Look at her shoes!)” With that, the two lads scampered away. It dawned on me that a) My shoes were indeed much like Philippine police and security guard-issue shoes; b) Did they think I was FBI??? They did think I was American, after all! c) Because street kids are often shooed away by these law enforcers, the sight of such shoes would be the equivalent of a flashing red siren; d) Because of their shorter stature, a po-

lice or guard’s shiny shoes is likely the first and last things these kids see as they scurry away. It also dawned on me, however, that these particular kids had let their perspective – and the negative associations of such – get the better of them. Hence, they had missed out on the opportunity to be on the receiving end of a couple of candy bars I had in my purse. I don’t normally like buying those flower leis (I am of the belief that child labor should not be condoned), nor do I like giving money (I don’t know for sure on what that will be spent). So, I generally carry treats around with me. Now this may seem way off-topic, but hang in there. I’m a self-confessed Sesame Street freak – I grew upon it, learned valuable life lessons and skills from it, and am still fascinated with it. One of my favorite songs from the syndicated kid’s series is all about perspective and focus; how you see things. A part of it goes: “Ohh, everything comes in its own special size / I guess it can be measured / by where you put your eyes / It so big when you're close / it looks smaller back

a bit / That's about the size of it / That's about the size / where you put your eyes / That's about the size of it.” The song lightheartedly illustrates the vital role that having the right perspective (and seeing things accordingly) plays in our lives. Problems deemed gargantuan may seem tiny when viewed from the vantage point of someone else’s challenges. Tasks that seem too huge to tackle seem more manageable when we back up from them a bit, for instance. Negative experiences in the past shouldn’t control our present and future – these should serve as lessons and learning curves, at best, no more. Perspective defines much of what we think, say, and do; and that cumulatively defines much of our lives. What are your pair of shiny shoes? What holds you back? What keeps you in fear of stepping out, speaking up, standing up? What hinders you from receiving life’s unexpected rewards? Whatever it is, look beyond it. In these oft troubling and confusing times, we all need proper perspective to help us make the most of life.
