SOUTH WHEELS SEGMENT The Modern City of AlUla
A
AlUla Central is the urban heart of AlUla and is a hive of commercial activity. There are many shops, restaurants, and public parks where you will find residents going about their daily lives. As you start your cycle, and head south away from AlUla Central, you will cycle past the last part of the Oasis and start to move through the residential neighborhood of AlUla South. Civilizations have made cities for centuries now, and in AlUla we are lucky to have examples of cities from many different eras.

MOUNTAIN VIEWS
Approximately 15KM into your cycle from Alfareed roundabout, you will be able to see the Northern lookout fort of the ancient city of Qurh. Once a bustling hub on the Syrian-Hajj route, Qurh was hailed by Almuqaddasi, a 9th-century traveler, as the largest city after Mecca. Today it is undergoing meticulous research and archaeological endeavors to uncover the secrets of the past. The echoes of its rich history still resonate with local residents, and special emphasis has been placed on preserving the ruins.

These are the most common trees you will see as you cycle through the AlUla desert. These are majestic trees that stand with their feathery foliage, spiny branches, creating an umbrella-like silhouette. They are resilient and hardy trees that need little water which enables them to withstand the harsh desert climate. They have small yellow flowers, and sometimes can be found with their spiral shaped seed pods hanging from their branches or scattered on the ground. These resilient desert dwellers offer animals shade and respite from the hot desert sun.
Volcanoes of the Past
E
In the distance, you can see a large, flat, dark plateau, like a giant table towards the sky. These are evidence of volcanoes in AlUla. Around 10 million years ago, an enormous bubble of magma rose from deep inside the Earth. This super hot molten rock reached the surface forcing cracks in the sandstone and pushing the liquid rock to the surface. Here it formed dozens of volcanoes. They erupted across the land, spewing lava for hundreds of kilometers. This lava, known as basalt, is very hard and takes a long time to break down, which is why
