AQC Q uil t Show 2016 Food for Thought

Inner Journeys

SAQA’s newest exhibition, Food For Thought, has arrived in Australia. 34 artworks created by SAQA members from around the world examine the many aspects that food plays in our daily lives — from a single piece of fruit to a still life, from the family table to the significance of food in cultural and family celebrations.

This new exhibition is the work of six South Australian textile artists, the SAlt group. The work is the artists’ unique and highly personal responses to the five themes; the physical journey, the emotional, spiritual, creative and the journey of discovery.

Double Wedding Ring Quilts by Victoria Findlay Wolfe Who would have thought this wonderful old favourite design could be given a modern makeover and look so incredible. Victoria has been dubbed a mod-quilt celebrity by the Wall Street Journal, meet her, see her quilts and be inspired.

Individual design, fabric selection, construction, quilting, and finishing techniques will be discussed.

Lessa is a highly experienced teacher and offers two project choices in this class. Rajah Revisited: 170cm x 170cm. This quilt was inspired by the original Rajah quilt in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. The original quilt was sewn by prisoners on board the ship Rajah which left England on April 5, 1841. Join Lessa in creating a little of your own early Australian quilting history. Or choose the Mystery Quilt option: Always a fun workshop, for any skill level. Your tutor will provide step-by-step instructions to complete a traditional machine-pieced quilt top with lots of tips for successful piecing along the way. This quilt is ideally suited to using lots of different fabric scraps. Instructions for pre-cutting fabric will be provided with the requirements list.

It is a wonderful class to use collections of big print fabrics – cats, Japanese fabrics, big florals or Kaffe Fassett prints – all the fabrics you buy because you love them – but which often sit unused as it is hard to put them together. If you do not want to use big prints it works as well with collections of batiks and modern fabric prints.

Creative Raw E d ge Col l a ge Tutor: Su za n n e Gu m m o w Sk ill lev el: A ll In this fun workshop, you will learn to look at fabrics and colour in totally new ways to create images to suit your textile works or quilts. You will create a small wall hanging approximately A3 size. Some of the techniques covered in this workshop will be basic design, raw edge appliqué, free machine stitching/quilting and finishing techniques that will be required for your special raw edge collage work. Students will work on individual themes and therefore all finished work will be unique.

This class focuses on making a four-ring double wedding ring which can then be appliquéd down onto a backing border, with a quick trick. Class time is spent designing, constructing, and learning and sewing curves for successful construction. Find out how fun and exciting the Double Wedding Ring quilt is, by someone who has made more than 50 of them herself! Victoria insists they are not hard, (be amazed!) but patience builders…

If you’d like to discover your wabi sabi, join this class and at the end of it you will have a folio of idea developments, design explorations, fabric art and design samples plus some tools for creative thinking and problem solving.
