AND TEXTILE ART EXPERIENCE! Dear Quilters, If you love quilting and textile art, AQC is an event not to be missed. It’s different to our other craft and quilting events in that it is totally dedicated to quilting in all its forms. Modern quilts, traditional quilts, art quilts, and contemporary pieces will all be featured at this event in an exhibition which is hand-picked. So what you’ll see is the cream of the crop and top notch pieces from around Australia and from overseas. Our challenge theme this year explores the concept of True Blue which has struck a chord with quilters and we have received more entries than ever before – and my, they are beauties! In the expo, retailers will be launching new products and demonstrating how to use them. And there’ll be more sewing machine brands there than we have ever had before. New fabric ranges, new books, new patterns and new gadgets are all there for you to see and try. Plus, you’ll get to meet some legends in the quilting world; experts presenting seminars and workshops. If you want to spend a little more time and book into full-day classes there are still a few places left. And after hours, there are lectures, social events and a gala dinner award presentation. So visit AQC; whether for a few hours or a few days, but just make sure you get there – you’ll love it. See you there,

Best Mates (detail) by Kathy Adams

As the Forest Falls Travelling through Oregon gave Caroline Sharkey fresh inspiration as she usually works with distinctive Australian colours. “The forest was just starting to fall with snow already on the mountaintops. Walking in green to red to golden leaves and in knee deep snow was a highlight of the trip.” The trip inspired this collection of small quilts using her signature technique of chopping the fabrics into tiny pieces then overstitching them. AQC QUILT SHOW 2015 (continued)

Lucy Carroll

GUEST ARTIST AT WORK

What is a Modern Quilt?

Lucy Carroll is an award-winning textile artist who works with layers of fabric, paint and stitching. Lucy’s work often has a quintessentially Australian feeling and she is the creator of the Gallipoli Quilt.

You’ve seen the solids, the negative space, the geometric designs. Let’s investigate further just what makes a modern quilt.

As a veteran of the Royal Australian Air Force, with strong ties to the Defence Community, Lucy made the Soldier On quilt in 2012 to raise awareness of the work the organization does for wounded service personnel. Lucy lives in Cairns with her husband and three young children and will demonstrate her techniques at AQC.

Teach Me Our expert tutors in town for AQC have brought quilts to show you – prepare to be awed by their work and gather loads of ideas.

The Gallipoli Quilt A feature of the quilt show at AQC, this work commemorates the Gallipoli Campaign, honouring the sacrifice of all the young men who participated in the landings so long ago, and the sacrifices made by their loved ones back home. This 12-metre work tells the story of one soldier’s journey to Gallipoli Cove and his struggles on the battlefield. Enjoy Lucy’s floor talk at 1.30pm daily at the quilt show Forest Floor (detail) by Jan Clark
