Special Guests and Great Classes! MEET MELISSA INGRAM – A PASSIONATE BEADWORK ARTIST!
Melissa Ingram’s beautiful beaded designs are a collective of the influences on her life. Melissa said understanding colour and selecting colour ways for her beadwork has become almost a separate art form in itself. In 2004 she taught herself peyote (Pay-Oh-Tee) stitch and from the moment she mastered this she was entranced and consumed by all the possibilities it generated. Working with Shibori ribbon as a design element within bead embroidery is her new love. Melissa explains, “Sherry Serafini, a designer from the USA, introduced this to the beading world in 2013. I ordered a dozen or so skeins of Shibori ribbon in different colours and I’ve been experimenting with how to interpret the Shibori silk ribbon into some of my designs ever since. It’s a divine and tactile material to work with and the design possibilities are infinite.” Don’t miss her award-winning beadwork and Soutache embroidered neckpieces – on display at the show, along with many of her other interesting pieces of wearable art. Melissa will be demonstrating how to work with Shibori silk ribbon and Soutache braid and how to bead various offloom beading stitches. She adds, “I am working on some new pieces specifically for the show that have not been seen publicly before.” If you’d like to learn something new with demonstrations like Melissa’s – buy your show entry tickets online now and save time in the ticket queues on the day!

‘THE FABRIC TRAIL’ Not all journeys have a destination…. In developing the Fabric Trail Exhibition, five South Australian textile artists from the SAlt (South Australian living textiles) group have travelled the world only to discover that their artistic destinations were insignificant, compared to their personal journeys. The explorations of Journey by Judy Bushby, Suzanne Gummow, Julie Haddrick, Francie Mewett and Sara Bell Smith is characterised by a great diversity, expressive use of media, varied and sometimes challenging imagery and the multiple techniques, materials and formats explored in the 40 art textile pieces.
Blue Willow Feather by Julie Haddrick.
From painted wholecloth, machine and hand-embroidered to layered or embellished, and patched and pieced – the variety and diversity will inspire.
See these fresh, responsive and contemporary works of art on display at the Stitches & Craft show.
BEAUTIFUL AUSTRALIA: A DISPLAY BY ‘THE MEXETTES’ Beautiful Australia is a captivating display of 16 art quilts, inspired solely by the astonishing diversity of Australia and incorporating its Aboriginal heritage, land, ocean, flora and fauna. The six quilters known collectively as ‘The Mexettes,’ share a remarkable story of friendship and quilting. Having met 23 years ago in the isolated outback town of Mt Isa, Queensland members – Sue Dennis, Margaret Edwards, Annette McRae, Diane Sheard, Jennie Short and Marilyn Tucker – bonded over a passion for quilting. The original five members have been joined by others over the years, and today they total seven – with six of the members having made the quilts featured in this beautiful exhibition. See them at the show.
Clockwise from top: work by Margaret Edwards, Dianne Sheard and Sue Dennis.
MODERN QUILTS A new modern quilting group, ‘2QMod’ has been launched within Queensland Quilters, with a display of modern quilts at the show. Modern quilts are inspired by contemporary design and modern quilters work in different styles which often feature solid colour, improvisational piecing, negative space and other elements to their quilts. CELEBRATING THIRTY! The Queensland Quilters Guild is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year and a quilt challenge went out to its members to make a 30cm x 30cm quilt to mark the occasion. Come to the show and see the results of their ‘Thirty’ challenge! The Stitches & Craft Show Guide ♥ 5
