Guest artist Danny See his amazing textile art
A
rtist turned quilter, Danny Amazonas has been creating a sensation at international quilting and art exhibitions around the world. And if you visit the Adelaide fair you can see an exhibition of his work and meet Danny!
About Danny Amazonas He was born in Taiwan and always loved art in all forms. As a jack of all trades, he tried painting, sculpture, and making gold jewellery, even got into international cuisine! “I was a professional floral designer in New York City in the 70s. Of all the things I tried, sewing wasn’t one of them. “In the early 80s, I was working with mosaic art using various materials. Later, in the 90s, I retired from business and returned to my birth place to take care of my ageing father. “I then discovered the world of colourful fabrics and the art of quilting. I perceived quilting as the art of sewing pieces of fabric together to create a beautiful design. As such, in my own concoction of fibre art while not knowing the basic requirements of quilting, I developed my own ‘quilting techniques’ for recreational purposes.

Amazonas
“My work eventually evolved from mosaic patterns into free-form. In 2012, using a new technique unprecedented in the field of fibre art, ‘Freehand Patchwork’ was born. “Freehand Patchwork is an unorthodox technique that is like painting with colourful fabric. The beauty of the original textile designs are fully expressed while freely interpreting the image of the textile art. This is something extraordinary that could not be achieved in painting. Using just rotary cutter and layers of overlapping fused fabric and having raw edges is something traditional quilters rarely do. Every piece of artwork is machine sewn with invisible thread with free motion stitches.” See Danny’s textile art and watch him at work on Thursday and Friday! Below: Smile; left: Peonies 2 (detail)

Collage to Stitch #2 A
new exhibition by the Four X Four group of textile artists from Adelaide, exploring designing in collage prior to stitching. Two years on from their inaugural exhibition in 2016, the group is still together and continues to explore the collage to stitch process, this time with a ‘twist’ to add variety and maintain interest. Instead of making a single collage per day, artists Maxine Fry, Ruth Galpin, Suzanne Gummow and Sandra Obst chose to make 30 post card collages per theme.
Artist
The artists continue to meet once per month to discuss, show, affirm and critique the work as it progresses. For this second exhibition, all four members have worked with the same themes of Seeing Red, Grids, Molten Gold and Structures.

Collage to Stitch #2 is the culmination of two years’ exploration of collage as a tool for developing ideas. The themes chosen are somewhat abstract topics, and they have provided new and very different challenges for each artist.

Experimentalists’ 20th Anniversary A4 Exhibition T
he Experimentalist’s group formed after approximately 20 Canberra-based quiltmakers attended an exhilarating four-day Masterclass with legendary international quilter Nancy Crow in 1997. Nancy was deliberate in helping her students to discard conventions and fly from their comfort zones into an exploratory new world. Their experience at this Masterclass and Nancy’s no-nonsense wisdom, pressing students to always advance their art, sparked a desire to keep experimenting and their ongoing commitment to advance their art through experimentation has stood the test of time with wonderful results. The group continued to meet four times a year since first coming together – and say they find this is integral in maintaining enthusiasm and to provide a supportive base amongst like-minded people. This year the Experimentalists are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Nancy Crow workshop and decided to make A4 size pieces. There is no theme but each piece reflects each members’ personality and way of working.

resented by Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), this museum quality exhibition, Textile Posters, combines the familiar materials of quilts
with the graphic vernacular of posters in this visually engaging textile exhibition. The selected pieces reflect the wide diversity of posters. What they all have in common is an emblematic economy of text and imagery. Conveying a message in the blink of an eye, it is that particular aesthetic consideration which characterises these textile artworks. Whether to inform, educate or persuade, some posters in this exhibition grab the viewer’s attention while others are more subtle in their approach, forcing the viewer to study the individual components.

Lest We Forget V
iew a thought-provoking embroidery display by members of the Embroiderers Guild of SA.
Guild president Joylene Smart instigated the President’s Challenge early last year for members to produce a postcard to commemorate 100 years since the end of WW1. “The reason I chose a postcard was because it was small but also because it was a commemoration of the postcards that the soldiers made while recuperating in hospital”, explained Joylene. The women in France and Belgium made up kits of fabric and thread to give to patients to keep them busy. These small kits were made into postcards and sent home to their loved ones. Joylene has been fortunate to see several original cards from 1914 to 1918. “Several of the original cards were made with a pocket where a small note was placed for the recipient”, she added.
The cards were mostly embroidered with Forget Me Nots, and flags of England, Australia, France and Belgium and a small sentiment.

Craft – the new yoga! It’s well known that our mental, physical and emotional health are all connected, but how can craft improve our general well-being?
C
raft can have surprising health and wellness benefits, from simple relaxation achieved by the rhythm of stitching or crochet, through to reconciliation of emotional conflicts as a result of art therapy. Crafters have reported that creative pursuits have helped in the management of addictions, to reduce anxiety and to calm negative behaviour. The rhythm of knitting and the mathematics required keep the mind focused on the moment rather than letting anxiety take over. Repetition involved in many crafts is soothing and conducive to a state of ‘flow’ – engagement where other worries and stresses are forgotten for at least a while.
“
Social wellness comes from being connected to people in your community and craft groups can provide that community as well as the friendships and shared interests that help people thrive.
“
The American Academy of Neurology reports in a recent study that craft can help protect the brain, stimulating new neurons to maintain cognitive health in middle and old age resulting in improved memory. 22 www.craftevents.com.au
Knitting is being recommended as a pain management technique by health practitioners. At the end of World War 1, this diversional therapy was used to treat soldiers suffering from what we now know as post-traumatic stress syndrome, and has now resurfaced today with psychologists prescribing knitting for pain management and colouring-in as a relaxation technique. Mindfulness – beneficial for our mental health can be induced more easily with repetitive simple tasks such as knitting – a meditative activity keeps the hands busy and the mind focused which dissipates anxiety and facilitates calm. Zentangle takes craft activity to a new meditative level, and people who paint or stitch also report a feeling of calm. Enhanced self-esteem can come from making something. For children, craft can also provide a non-tech, non-screen activity to detox from the digital world. Doing craft encourages kids to pay attention to detail, to control impulses and to express themselves and helps in the development of fine-motor skills. However holistic health requires more than physical and mental wellbeing. Social, spiritual and emotional aspects are also part of wellness and craft can address these needs. Social wellness comes from being connected to people in your community and craft groups can provide that community as well as the friendships and shared interests
that help people thrive. Guilds, men’s sheds and craft friendship groups encourage social connections. Spiritual health involves having a sense of purpose that can come from creating and belonging to a group is even better. Many quilt groups have programs to donate finished works to people in need. Aussie Hero Quilts has had a positive influence on the lives of hundreds of our Defence Force personnel. Angel Gowns helps fill a void for families affected by the loss of a baby. Many groups fundraise to help charities too. Connectedness to tradition and to previous generations can also come from doing craft. Craft can also promote emotional wellness. It can be a form of creative expression, and even to work through feelings of trauma or loss. Making commemorative works such as memory quilts, painting, journaling, scrapbooking or textile art can all be used to journey through a difficult period. Just the activity of making can
provide a much-needed clearer head space. Intellectual wellness can come from lifelong learning and craft can provide opportunities for exchange of knowledge, learning from each other and teaching others. People who do craft report mental health benefits such as reduced stress and less anxiety. At the fair, we’ll promote the wellness benefits of craft through our new Craft Wellness Wheel, educating people about the powerful role craft can play in our general health and well-being.

25 Fabulous Crafty Years A message from Gary Fitz-Roy, Managing Director, Expertise Events
F
rom the beginning as a single hall event at the Exhibition Centre at Darling Harbour in 1994, the fair is now the largest The late Graeme craft event in the Southern Hemisphere. ‘Shirley’ Strachan Adelaide’s first fair was in 2001 and the fairs opening the 1994 fair. were the first Australian craft events to be held in international venues, positioning craft alongside mainstream events such as motor shows and international medical conferences. It’s been an amazing journey and quite an accomplishment that our Craft & Quilt Fair can bring so much joy to so many. We feel so honoured to have shared the journey with so many wonderful people. The fairs have been enjoyed by millions of craft lovers and nurtured the creative industry and inspired creative souls by showcasing world class displays and international as well as home grown talent. Designer Kaffe Fassett, quilter Margaret Rolfe, decoupeur Nerida Singleton, tea cosy designer Loani Prior, fabric designer Tula Pink and crochet designer Kerry Lord are just some of the guest artists who have featured at the fair. Quilt shows, competitions and workshops have been a feature at the events. Expertise Events has also nurtured non-profit groups with more than $3 million in cash sponsorship allocated over 25 years to guilds, more than $50,000 in prize money and the provision of stands for non-profit groups for little or no cost. We have invested $27 million in advertising and promoting craft and raised the industry’s profile. In 2016 we created the Craft for Kids Foundation to facilitate the donation of craft supplies from visitors and deliver them to kids in need. We are committed to giving back and have made financial and marketing resources available to many charities. It’s nice to see some of what we have achieved being re-invested and nurtured by the industry and more importantly, by the community. Throughout the 25 years, the Craft & Quilt Fair has been supported by the iconic magazine, The Australian Women’s Weekly. The Weekly holds a special place as it’s where I met my wife, Judy Newman, who became our craft consultant. She has a passion for craft, coming from a formal textile teaching background and together I think we make a great team. The future looks bright and we look forward to the next 25 years and seeing where we can take craft. March 21 – 24, 2019 29
