Riverlea’s Japan Club

A unique display of Japanese style works by local quilters Nine years ago, Lyn Upill followed her passion for all things Japanese and began a monthly Japan Club meeting in her Adelaide quilt shop ‘Riverlea’. Little did she expect that at the end of a year’s classes, the students would want more, so in catering for this growing interest, Lyn designed a programme for each year level. In 2017 some 50 or so students continue to be passionate, inspired, challenged and involved in Japan Club. Lyn Upill takes students through basic patch working techniques in combination with customary Japanese folk craft techniques, as well as contemporary Japanese quilt-making. In response, students make inspired, unique and often intricately beautiful, large and small quilts. Beginners to experienced quilters enjoy gathering to learn about the textiles, culture, ceramics, food, gardening, landscapes, art, history and travel in Japan and to share their common interests and experiences.

This inaugural ‘Japan Club Exhibition’ will showcase a magnificent collection of many beautiful and highly original quilts. Most of these quilts have never been exhibited before.

Local Heroes

South Australia has a wealth of quilting talent. This display celebrates two of those talented quilters in a retrospective look at their work. Julie Haddrick is an exciting name on the Australian art textiles scene and she enjoys great successes with her quilt making. She is a multi-award winner, including a first in the innovative category of The World Quilt Competition, in the USA. Julie is best known for her panoramic, multiple view landscape quilts, as well as botanical studies of animals and birds.

Michele Hill has been quilting for 25 years and adores appliqué. Michele has won many awards for her quilts with four Best of Show awards in 2005, 2007, 2011 and 2013. Additionally, in 2014 Michele was awarded the prestigious Rajah Award. Michele has written several books featuring appliqué patterns inspired by the designs of William Morris and May Morris.

Aussie Bush Project Textile Artist Dijanne Cevaal

Textile artist Dijanne Cevaal has conducted two international projects in recent years, The Sentinelles and The Medieval Project; she designed and printed hand dyed lino-cut prints which textile artists embellished with stitch. Both were so well received and resulted in exciting visual exhibitions that she has embarked on a new theme: The Aussie Bush Project. The latest project will be displayed at the fair. Panels feature four different Australian bush themes which have been embellished and embroidered by stitchers around the country. The themes are Gumnuts and Gum Leaves; Banksia Cones and Flowers; Unfurling Fern Frond and Blackwoods Dancing. Meet Dijanne at the fair and enjoy her demonstrations of linocut printing and stitching.
