Welcome

At a glance

Dear Craft Fair Friends,

One of the best things about the Craft & Quilt Fair is finding out what’s new in the world of craft, and seeing what other people are making. And wow – Waikato people, you are in for a treat! The fair is jam-packed with inspirational displays; there are several amazing exhibitions of international and local quilts as well as demonstrations of fibre craft and embroidery. Don’t miss the quilts from the US that everyone is talking about. You may have seen them online, come to the fair and see them ‘in the cloth’! The display includes designs by Elizabeth Hartman and Alison Glass. The delightful Michele Hill is one of our guest artists and brings some of her incredible work to show, plus she will give a presentation on Friday afternoon, transporting you to the world of UK designer William Morris. Stop by the Collage to Stitch display, and see how a group of designers have used collage as the starting point for their design work. And have a go at weaving with the local Creative Fibre group who will have demonstrations of spinning, weaving and felting. Plus, you can have your say and vote for your favourite work in their exhibition. Come along and stock up on your supplies for papercraft, knitting, embroidery and loads of great new books, fabrics and patterns. See the fair program of workshops and hands-on sessions on the website at www.craftevents.co.nz For the latest information, like us on facebook at /intocraft and follow us on Instagram @intocraft. Enjoy the fair,

Guest Artist – Michele Hil

Australian Michele has been quilting for 25 years and adores appliqué. During the last 17 years her work has been inspired by William Morris and designs from architecture and the Arts & Crafts era. Her specialty is machine appliqué with hand embellishment. Michele has won many awards for her quilts with four Best of Show awards in her state show in 2005, 2007, 2011 and 2013. Additionally, in 2014 Michele was awarded the prestigious Rajah Award. Michele has written several books featuring applique patterns inspired by William Morris, May Morris and her latest volume features embroidered and quilted projects inspired by the works of Beatrix Potter. In recent years, Michele has hosted tours to the UK to share her love of William Morris and the Arts & Crafts era. Meet Michele at the fair and enjoy a display of her exquisite quilts and embroidery.

An Afternoon with Michele Hil “Come and join me as we take a visual journey to the UK right here in New Zealand from the comfort of your own seat. Let me share my 20-year passion of William Morris and his daughter May as we travel through Oxford, London and the charming English countryside that he so loved. We will also travel to Iceland where we discover the roots of this complex and creative man who was also a dreamer and a romantic. Morris was ahead of his time in matters of social consciousness and environment and some of it even led him to being arrested, but how lucky we are that he has left us his legacy of timeless patterns.”

Friday September 8, 2pm to 3pm: Book tickets now at www.craftevents.co.nz and go to Craft & Quilt Fair then Hamilton. Cost: $18

The latest project will be displayed at the fair. Panels feature four different Australian bush themes which have been embellished and embroidered by stitchers around the country. Jo Dixey is a freelance embroiderer and stitch artist. She teaches a variety of embroidery techniques to small groups and conducts design based workshops. She loves working on commissioned pieces which have included large altar cloths, university banners and pieces for the fashion industry. These pieces are mostly based on the human form and often comment on issues I have with modern life!” Jo has trained at the Royal School of Needlework, followed by City and Guilds Creative Embroidery Parts 1 and 2. She also worked for the Embroiderers Guild in the UK. See her new book at the fair.

On display will be members’ work of diverse styles and techniques; quilts made for fun or to give to friends and family, as well as quilts that are heirloom quality. There’s no shortage of talent in the group; quilters such as Betty McLean, Anne Jolly and Lori Neels are awardwinning quilters who create exquisite applique, traditional and art quilts, teach workshops and share their skills. Community quilts are a focus of the group, and will be showcased at the fair. Usually members collaborate to produce these quilts; sometimes four or five people have had input into a quilt. Creative Fibre – Waikato Fire & Ice was the theme of the challenge this year; the group dyed 10 kilograms of fleece using two colours: red and blue. The challenge required people to use it to make something for the head, hands or feet: hats, gloves and socks perhaps? There’ll be an exhibition of selected new works by members; all handmade, felted, knitted, woven, hand spun, garments, homewares and skeins of handspun yarn, etc. The public can vote for their favourite – so have your say and cast your vote! Visitors can see demonstrations of spinning, weaving and different kinds of felting, and take the opportunity to have a go at weaving. On Thursday and Saturday, fashion parades will take place, so be there early to enjoy them. The Waikato area has 15 groups spreading from the King Country to the top of Coromandel – Cambridge, Hakarimata (Ngaruawahia area), Hamilton, Matamata, Mercury Bay, Morrinsville, Taumaranui, Taupo, Te Awamutu, Te Kuiti, Thames, Tokoroa, Waihi and Whangamata. Several groups have day and night meetings to accommodate their members.

Now you have a chance to win one of these quilts. Just enter into the raffle to be in to win, and the proceeds will go towards their mission to continue helping children in need. The display will also include quilts from areas of the surrounding Waikato Region including: Te kauwhata, Paeroa, Puturura, and Kereone. Find out more about these groups at the fair.
