Twin Stitching Talents Meet Maricor and Maricar

Maricor and Maricar are designers that illustrate and illustrators who embroider. They’ve made the most of their slightly obsessive compulsive impulses by taking up needle and thread as their tools of choice.

Meet them at the Craft & Quilt Fair, see their fresh and funky designs. You might also like to pull up a chair and stitch a little with them in a mini-workshop. They have handcrafted tactile graphics for clients such as Myer, Vogue Japan, Washington Post, West Elm, Land of Nod, Oh Joy!, Design*Sponge, Wired Magazine UK, ESPN Magazine, British Council Australia, Havas Worldwide, Clemenger BBDO, TOMS Shoes. They were awarded a British Council RYD award in 2010 and in 2012 they were selected as Art Directors Club Young Guns. BO YOUR OK ONLINCLASS E AT TH OR E FAIR!

Embroidery Workshops Maricor and Maricar will hold a series of hands-on workshops at the fair that draw inspiration from their distinctively colourful, patterned and painterly approach to contemporary embroidery. These workshops are suitable for all levels, and costs include one design, hoop, needle and threads. Friday and Sunday: 11am to 12.30pm & 2pm to 3.30pm (3 hours total, 90 minute lunch break) ♥ Sweater Letter workshop. An ode to colourfully patterned knit sweaters. Our workshops bundle up the main embroidery stitches for beginners, and demonstrate how you can use the simplest of stitches to create a variety of textures. Class cost: $130. Saturday: 10.30am to 12.30pm ♥ Thank You Letter workshop. This workshop is based on our series of ‘Thank you’ artworks that we create using our trademark colourful ‘painting with thread’ style, to embroider a colourful and painterly monogram. During the workshop we’ll show you how we use water-coloured sketches for the basis of the lettering design, and demonstrate the main stitches we use. For this workshop we’re encouraging everyone to throw away the stitch plan and embrace a freeform organic approach to embroidery. Class cost: $90. Saturday: 1.30pm to 3.30pm ♥ Heart Patterns workshop. Embracing embroidery as a mark making tool. Participants will create a contemporary stitch sampler using our trademark ‘fractured pattern’ style of embroidery where patterns of colour are layered on patterns of stitches. Class cost: $90. ♥ classes are suitable for all skill levels. Classes are only available to visitors to the fair who have purchased an entry ticket.

For additional class descriptions and to book your class, visit: maricormaricar.com/shop OR book at Maricor and Maricar’s display area at the fair.

Celebrating Silver

Left: Angel of Silver by Wendi Bucey, USA: Gustav Klimt’s ‘Portrait of Adele’ was my inspiration. Several references to silver are included through handcrafted foil coin buttons. Above: Ciel D’Argent by Judith Trager, USA: The sunset sky brings swaths of silver and bold strokes of pinks and purples imposed on deep blues. Below: The promise of days to come. Embracing the Silver Years by Jayne Gaskins, USA: I find great beauty in women who embrace their age and proudly display their hair in its natural silvery colour.

Silver is indispensable. From industrial use to decoration, technology, photography and medicine, its unique properties of strength, malleability, reflectivity and conductivity make it an irreplaceable force in the global market. In addition to its physical properties silver is recognised as a symbol of love, insurance and commitment for twenty five years. Studio Art Quilters’ Celebrating Silver exhibition is a tribute to the group’s 25th anniversary. 35 quilts from their members in the USA, Canada and Italy show a diverse range of techniques while celebrating the common theme. See this fascinating exhibition at the fair. Presented by

Constants & Variables A challenge by the Viewpoints 9 group This exhibition of international art quilts is from a group of nine quilters from five countries. The Constants & Variables Challenge explores themes the quilters have set each other. In this display we show the two themes of Reinterpreting Tradition and Text. Quilters in Viewpoints 9 include Betty Busby (USA), Alicia Merrett (UK), Sue Dennis (Australia), Martha Wolfe (USA), Hsin-Chen Lin (Taiwan), Kim Misik (South Korea), Kate Themel (USA), Lisa-Marie Sanders (USA) and Diane Wright (USA). Constants and Variables, challenged the members to respond to a physical variable in their work within a personal theme of their choosing. Captions: Above: From the Text collection, Martha Wolfe created Pulse. Her statement: June 12th, 2:06 am, Eddie Justice texted his mother from a bathroom inside Pulse, an Orlando, Florida nightclub. ‘Mommy I love you’. Texting, they shared the terror as it unfolded. ‘I’m going to die’ By dawn, he and 48 other members and allies of the LGBTQ community had been killed. Top right: From Text, by Alicia Merrett: The Play’s the Thing. I am a great fan of Shakespeare’s plays, but what fascinates me most is the magic of Shakespeare’s words. ‘The Play’s the Thing’ uses titles of his plays to work a design with colourful text on a dark background. It is made with a fused appliqué technique. Right: From the Traditions collection, Betty Busby created Crystallography Her statement: Using free form paper piecing combined with appliqué and non woven materials, Crystallography gets inside the poky macro world of crystal formation.

Paws & Whiskers Challenge

Enjoy the results of this mini textile art challenge, where quilters were invited to enter a small piece (25cm square) which shows off and celebrates their best furry friend. Entrants have used appliqué, embroidery, felting, photographic transfer and numerous other techniques – study them for some great ideas. On display will be 48 delightful pet portraits and their accompanying stories.

OLLAGE TO STITCH

A new exhibition

Presented by Four X Four, a new exhibition of textile art will be on display at the fair. This new exhibition, Collage to Stitch, is the work of four South Australian textile artists and is the culmination of one year’s exploration of collage as a tool for developing ideas. The themes chosen and the approaches taken reflect personal passions and generally revolve around nature. Flowers, trees and gardens were frequent topics for reflection by artists Maxine Fry, Ruth Galpin, Suzanne Gummow and Sandra Obst. See the collages along with the resulting textile artworks on display at the Hobart Craft & Quilt Fair and meet artist Maxine Fry.

Details: Collage to Stitch exhibition presented by Four x Four. On display at the Hobart Craft & Quilt Fair

Inner Journeys – SAlt

This exhibition is the work of six South Australian textile artists, the SAlt group. The work displayed reflects the artists’ unique and highly personal responses to the five themes – the physical journey, the emotional, spiritual, creative and the journey of discovery.

SAlt (South Australian living textiles) is a group of 6 independent textiles practitioners. Collaboratively the SAlt group sets challenges to inspire, explore, extend, respond to, critique and reflect on each theme. The six members are: Judy Bushby, Suzanne Gummow, Julie Haddrick, Francie Mewett, Sara Bell Smith and newcomer Wendy Thiele.

Thoroughly Modern Making a difference

The Tasmanian Modern Quilt Guild will have a dynamic, interactive display at the fair, featuring lots of modern, quilts and cushions. You will see three areas – Work, Rest and Play. Work to help design and colour-in a block on the zentangling design wall (and go into the draw to win a prize!), have a break, sit on cushions and browse through some modern quilting mags in their relaxing Rest area or Play with shapes in their improv quilt corner. There will also be a display exhibition featuring 20 members’ quilts.

Local Tasmanian, Campbell, is a determined 12 year old boy, with a passion to provide for those in need. At nine years of age Campbell decided to make teddy bears for sick children and hand deliver them to help brighten their day. His mother, Sonya, said “He looks at sadness and tries to turn it upside down”. In the last three years he has stitched and given away about 800 bears and with help from his mother, Campbell established ‘Project 365 – Healing Bears’ to raise awareness and give the public a chance to contribute to his bear making endeavour. Campbell will be at the Brother Stand, F02, on Saturday only. See him at the fair!

Dream catchers have been around for generations and are currently enjoying a revival. A challenge was put to craft fair exhibitors to create a dream catcher using anything at all, including materials they offer at the fair. Native American legend says that good dreams pass through the hole in the centre of the web while bad dreams are caught in the web. The good dreams will flow down the feathers to the person while the bad dreams dissolve in the daylight. Catch the display and see the different interpretations and be inspired to make one of your own!

Sonja will fit the pattern on a volunteer and discuss any fitting issues, covering some design changes. Masterclass cost $5 in Workshop 1. Book at Stand F03.

 2pm ♥ The Notebook Case. Mio Fujita, Studio Mio. A new take on a classic style. Beautiful oil cloth case has two internal pockets. A6 size notebook will fit nicely. Great introduction to attaching frames with no stitching holes. Available in a variety of colours. Kit cost $25. Book at Stand C13.

Plus! Free Make and Take at the Close To My Heart Stand, F13.

Giving all kids creativity

You too could have a coat like mine.

The Craft for Kids Foundation was established for the collection and distribution of craft supplies, to give to charities for children in their care to use in craft activities. Craft allows children to explore their creativity and is pure expression through their eyes with no rules or boundaries. The materials they work with are tactile, colourful and varied and provide children of all capacities to explore; with the satisfaction of making something as a gift or to keep. Craft for Kids Foundation will donate craft supplies to charities that care for Australian children who are physically, emotionally, financially or geographically disadvantaged. You are invited to bring in your unwanted craft supplies and place them in the special Craft for Kids Foundation area at the fair. Your donation will be stored in Expertise Events’ warehouse then delivered to charities. Craft items you can donate include yarn, fabric, paper, lace, braid, craft tools, glue and embellishments. Items that won’t be accepted include: money, unfinished projects, knitting needles, crochet hooks or pattern books.
