Amigurumi* Anyone? Kerry Lord’s enchanting crocheted characters

Kerry Lord’s enchanting crocheted characters have captivated children and adults alike around the world resulting in her books Edward’s Menagerie and Edward’s Imaginarium becoming best-sellers. Kerry, a knit and crochet designer from the UK, will be our guest artist at the fair and she’s bringing a load of her charming characters along too. Get ready to spend time with a suave high-flying rhino, a lovesick elephant who knows her way around a kitchen, and a seriously chivalrous tiger... plus Kerry will have a swag of Australian animals in tow. The menagerie began when, with just two weeks to go before baby Edward’s due date, Kerry picked up a crochet hook for the first time and a new obsession began. Over the next 12 months the collection of crochet animals expanded week on week until Edward’s Menagerie was complete with 40 unique patterns.

Explore Textile Art

Magical Creatures using different textile skil s & techniques Magical Creatures and Where to Make Them is the theme of the ATASDA group’s display and visitors will see the way different textile skills and techniques, such as stitching, embroidery, felting, dyeing, weaving, and more, interpret the same theme. Throughout the day, there’ll be free demonstrations of textile related techniques.

Chectkimtehteable demohe website on t

Magical Creatures in the display will be made with felt, dyeing and many more textile techniques.

New in 2017 – every day at 12 noon, the free demonstration will be focussed on felting – felted flowers, jewellery, and related techniques. Visitors to the fair are encouraged to ‘Have Magical Creatures a Go’ with the help … and where to make them of the members on the stand.

Meet a Member. Come along to the stand during the show and meet some of the very talented members, including Rae Woolnough (on Friday and Saturday) and Margaret Millar (on Sunday only). Margaret Millar: Colour is always a key component of Margaret’s work. Her two textile passions are felting and mixed media. She likes to include hand dyed printed fabrics in pieces. Silkscreen printing her own designs on paper and fabric helps keep her work unique and original. Hand stitching, free machine embroidery, quilting, painting, journaling and book making are some of the embellishment techniques she uses. Come and talk to Margaret and see examples of her art work on the ATASDA stand on Sunday.

Rae Woolnough: Rae ‘paints’ with wool. Using wool and other fibres she explores the textures, shape and colour of the minute world of mosses, lichens and other detritus on the forest floor in the Australian bush. She expresses this through manipulating felt using techniques such as shibori, nuno and orikiri. These processes involve tying, dyeing, binding, folding and cutting the felt during different stages of the process to create unique textural artworks which she then presents framed.

Mixed media collage detail Margaret Millar

“Wool is a renewable Australian grown resource and wool fibre has amazing lustre and textural qualities that make it a perfect medium to produce textile artworks,” explains Rae.

Papercraft Display Aussie Bush Project Mythical Creatures & Metallic Themes

A display of cards & layouts Cards: Enjoy a display of handmade cards and photo scrapbook layouts from a recent challenge. The theme for the card challenge was Mythical Creatures and entrants used stamping, paper cutting, three dimensional techniques and mixed media. Layouts: Creators of the layouts had to incorporate the theme Metallic in their work. Cash prizes were awarded to the winners.

Get great ideas and be inspired to create in paper.

Textile artist Dijanne Cevaal has conducted two international projects in recent years, The Sentinels and The Medieval Project; she designed and printed hand dyed linocut prints which textile artists embellished with stitch. Both were so well received and resulted in exciting visual exhibitions that she has embarked on a new theme: The Aussie Bush Project. The latest project will be displayed at the fair. Panels feature four different Australian bush themes which have been embellished and embroidered by stitchers around the country. The themes are Gumnuts and Gum Leaves; Banksia Cones and Flowers; Unfurling Fern Frond and Blackwoods Dancing. Meet Dijanne at the fair and enjoy demonstrations of lino cutting and printing. Images. Above: Gum nuts by Sally Ann Westcott; Right: Dijanne has linocut printed all the panels in the project then stitchers from around the country have embellished them.

Patches at Work

Historical fashion from the Cavalcade group Patches will be the focus of the display by the Cavalcade of History and Fashion this year. Evidence of patchwork, piecing small pieces of fabric together to create a larger piece, has been found throughout history. The centrepiece of the display is a wonderful 1890s gown of crazy patchwork, a technique which was incredibly popular during the Victorian era. The random shapes of luxurious fabric such as velvet, silk, lace and brocade in rich colours are embroidered with herringbone stitch. You may also revisit the long patchwork skirts of the 70s and Maggie Shepherd’s iconic 1980s outfits. Quilts are included too. One from 1870 in a log cabin pattern; another early one, unfinished, with the foundation papers used for piecing, still in evidence; dress fabrics from the 1950s are used in another quilt. Accessories include patchwork shoes, handbags, wonderful tea cosies from the late 1800s, aprons from a variety of eras and many more. Wonder at sewing boxes from decades ago and marvel at Cavalcade’s heritage ribbons, laces, beading, tassels and buttons. Floortalks: At 11.30am and 2.30pm enjoy a floortalk on the history of patchwork.

Order & Chaos Embroidery Display

The installation features interactive wall works, towers of 3D geometric shaped objects, wearable art, and other items all embroidered by Guild members. Techniques include traditional and contemporary stitching. Visit the stand to watch experienced Guild teachers giving free demonstrations daily on a variety of techniques.
