Welcome! Last year, two women in Melbourne had a crafty idea that has captured the imagination of people all around the country! They imagined how wonderful it would be if there was a field of handmade poppies laid in Federation Square on Anzac Day 2015 – to commemorate the Anzac Centenary. They thought, ‘What if we could get 5000 Poppies made by people from all around Australia?’ The word spread, craftspeople responded like they so often do, and in no time the target of 5000 was reached and passed. But they are not stopping – instead they are looking forward to seeing just how far this poppy adventure will go. The project has struck a chord with people everywhere and everyone wants to be involved. We want to be involved and we’re sure you do too. We are inviting you to bring your poppies to the show and help us cover a wall in the flower of remembrance; at the end of the show we will send the poppies to Melbourne. Read more about it inside. Of course there are other great features at the show. Don’t miss: The Sentinelles – a collaborative exhibition of embroidered panels by Australian and French women, and the SAQA art quilts from 50 quilters around the world. Plus from closer to home, we have the Central Coast Modern Quilters with a display of their work and live demonstrations. You can get hands-on in classes – choose from textile art, printing, painting and dyeing, scrapbooking, card making, embroidery, jewellery making and much more. Plus – the Woodies will be turning timber into masterpieces before your very eyes. And as a bonus, we’ve kept the entry ticket price the same as last year. Come along and support your local show and don’t forget to bring your poppies!

International Textile Art on Display An international textile art exhibition has just landed in Australia and will be on display at the show. 50 small exhibition art quilts celebrate the SAQA group’s 25th anniversary and are one of eight trunk shows that are travelling the world until 2017. Trunk Show G which will tour Australia includes internationally renowned art quilters such as Dianne Firth (Australia), HsinChen Lin (Taiwan), Alicia Merrett (England) and Cynthia St Charles (USA). The trunk show is a wonderful way to view and engage with quilts made using a wide variety of styles, techniques, and fibres by many who are considered masters in their field. SAQA is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the art quilt and the artists who create them. SAQA is also a resource on all things art quilt related for both its members and the general public. Founded in 1989 by an initial
group of 50 artists, SAQA members now number more than 3,000 artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators and corporate sponsors across the globe. A dedicated core of volunteers and staff keep the organisation vibrant, dynamic, and progressive.
See
Curated by Eileen Doughty, the 25th Anniversary Trunk Show was designed to showcase SAQA’s diversity of talent and SAQA’s mission to ‘promote the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation, and publications’.
50 works on show from around the world
Each work measures 25.4cm x 17.8cm (10in x 7in) and is part of SAQA’s third trunk show.

Make it Modern! Bright, fresh and thoroughly modern quilts will be on display The Central Coast Modern Quilt Guild will have a display of bright, modern quilts at the show. Part of their display includes the results of a challenge held this year in which members had to design and make a one-block-quilt to donate to the Blankets of Love program. There will also be a splendid quilt (picture right) made by local quilt maker Leanne Harvey, which won an award at the recent Sydney Quilt Show. This year at the show members of the group will be working on a charity quilt. They’ll also have the quilt made at last year’s show and raffle tickets will be available, with all proceeds from the raffle going to Relay for Life – Team Kea.

The Sentinelles Enjoy a display of embroidered textile art!
Special Guest Meet designer, teacher and author Janelle Wind
The Sentinelles exhibition is the concept of Dijanne Cevaal and originally consisted of just the large pieces by Dijanne in this display. She then hand printed smaller panels that could be bought by others to create embroideries, and each purchaser of these hand printed panels could embroider or embellish the pieces in their own way. This has resulted in contributions by stitchers throughout France and Australia. Each piece explores aspects of the earth and each sentinel deals with aspects of the environment. The term Sentinelle infers watching over. Dijanne has recently returned from a successful exhibition tour with the Sentinelles in France, this moving display can be seen at the Stitches & Craft Show, before returning to France by popular demand.
Janelle is a designer of many patchwork items including bags, quilts, home decor items and more. Her style is fresh and modern and her patterns are gorgeous with lots of easy to follow instructions and diagrams – perfect for beginners! She has been a pattern designer in the patchwork industry for more than 15 years, beginning with wall and bed quilts, cushions and table runners. She loves designing ‘useful’ projects that anyone can make. Her blog is very popular and covers all aspects of her life, including what she’s sewing, making, wearing and creating. Janelle’s book, ‘Pieces of Me’, featuring 18 projects will be available at the show too. About her work, Janelle says, “Stitching to me is like breathing. It is a necessary part of my every day and something that brings me great joy. It is with these thoughts and feelings in mind that I share my designs through paper patterns. My patterns are written as though I am sitting beside you, helping you with each step of the process. It is so important to me that my students and those making my projects not only enjoy the process of making one of my designs, but that they are able to complete each step, from cutting, piecing and pressing to quilting and binding for example. Therefore my patterns are detailed but contain lots of diagrams to help with the production process as well. I also aim to give value for money, so there’s more than one project included in almost every pattern.” On display you’ll see Janelle’s contemporary quilts, laptop bags, cushion and bag patterns and more. She will also be at the show every day for book signings and to answer your crafty questions. Meet Janelle and see her creations on display at the Thorpe & Co stand, A07, at the show.

5000 Poppies Help us create a wall of poppies Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight from Melbourne are on a mission to create a field of more than 25000 handcrafted poppies in Federation Square, Melbourne on Anzac Day 2015 for the Anzac Centenary Commemoration. They set what they thought was ‘a challenging but achievable target’ of 5,000 poppies in June 2013 and since then this phenomenal project has taken off like wildfire in craft communities around the country and indeed around the world.
Your handmade poppies can be crocheted, knitted, felted or sewn. Any shade of red can be used and poppies should be no more than 15cm in diameter. There is no limit to the amount of poppies that can be submitted and there is no entry fee. Contributors are asked to provide their own materials. For further information on the project – and patterns – visit the blog, 5000poppies.wordpress.com and the 5000 Poppies Facebook page.
The show will feature a wall which you are invited to cover with your handmade poppies. Anyone can contribute to the project and the Hunter Group of the Knitters Guild of NSW will be there to collect your poppies.
