Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation, and publications. A dedicated core of volunteers and staff keep the organization vibrant, dynamic, and progressive.

A new Textile Art Exhibition Premieres
Making it Modern The trend for modern quilts has taken off and at the show you can see some superb examples on display from the Sydney Modern Quilt Guild (formerly known as the Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild.
And The Wheels Go Round (detail) by Sue Reid
An exhibition of quilts that explores the fourth dimension A Matter of Time, exploring the fourth dimension, is an exhibition of 32 new works, curated by Brenda Gael Smith, will be seen for the first time at Sydney Stitches & Craft Show. The exhibition will include works by some of the world’s foremost quilters from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. The high standard of previous exhibitions curated by Brenda Gael Smith; recently Beneath the Southern Sky and Living Colour!, makes this a highly anticipated show. Thursday and Sunday ONLY: Join curator Brenda Gael Smith for a floor talk exploring the fourth dimension in cloth at 12.30pm, at the display.
Under The Sea by Lorene Uriarte Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include bold colours, areas of solid color, improvisational piecing and expansive negative space.

Wabi sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature and the acceptance of life’s natural cycle of growth, decay and death, and this philosophy has continued to stimulate Haddrick in her creative practice. Inspiring a pared-down ‘essence’; a minimalism embracing the ‘bloom of time’, Haddrick combined botanical illustration with fabric and stitch. She breeds and at times hand-rears yellow canaries; this love and close observation of her canaries fuelling the ‘TIME’ challenge. ‘Seasonal Yellow’ embraces and reveres her aviaries’ bloom of time. 4 ♥ The Stitches & Craft Show Guide

We are all held mercilessly by the hands of time; our bodies dissolve or perhaps evolve depending on your point of view. Our souls float to the fourth dimension. A human Möbius strip — no end and no beginning — shows our unravelling, our aging, and I’ve made it deliberately metallic to show our impervious nature as we fight back, doing all we can to delay the inevitable.
Yes, you do have room for a long arm! The Simply Sixteen with Little Foot enables a Quilter to finish any size quilt without the space requirements of a conventional frame. Come to our stand #L22 to test drive the new Simply Sixteen.

Food! We eat every day, but how often do we really think about the food we eat? Rachel has a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree, is a Ranger Certified Educator and Copic Certified Instructor. Her work has been widely published and she regularly appears on QVC UK and Scrap It TV.
Every culture has its celebrations, family meals, and traditions that involve food. Although these vary in different parts of the world, the impact of food is unmistakable. Food nourishes and fuels our bodies, food traditions nurture our souls. Food For Thought examines the many aspects that food plays in our daily lives — from a single piece of fruit to a still life, from the family table to the significance of food in culture and the celebration of family milestones.
Weaving with Rainie Williams Weaving is one of the main ways to create fabric – and weaving by hand with a simple loom is a relaxing and creative way to make beautiful hangings for your wall or small items like scarves.
It’s the Beans by Phyllis Cullen
SAQA’s newest exhibition, Food For Thought, is debuted at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, and is now travelling internationally. Juror Alex Veronelli selected 34 artworks created by SAQA members from around the world.
Rainie Williams is mad about weaving and has designed some beautiful bamboo looms to help people get started. Rainie will join us at the show as our guest artist. Don’t miss Rainie’s miniworkshops at the stand, and check out her tiny looms, round looms and drop spindle. See the website for details: www.craftevents.com.au
Voices from the Past During World War One, postcards were sent to loved ones by soldiers – particularly from France. See a very special display from the Embroiderers’ Guild NSW – of postcards worked by Guild members as part of the centenary of the Anzac landing.
Enid Taylor, Lismore
The original works which inspired this display were by local French women, who made them to help support their families during wartime. They were embroidered by hand in silk or rayon threads on white silk or organdie. The main stitches used were satin, bullion, cross and straight stitches. After the embroideries were completed they were made into postcards, then sold to soldiers to send home to their families and sweethearts.

Giving all kids creativity Expertise Events, organisers of The Stitches & Craft Show, has introduced a new initiative in 2016 – the Craft for Kids Foundation. The Foundation is for the collection and distribution of craft supplies, to give to charities for children in their care to use in craft activities. Craft allows children to explore their creativity and is pure expression through their eyes with no rules or boundaries. The materials they work with are tactile, colourful and varied and provide children of all capacities to explore and have the satisfaction of making something as a gift or to keep. Craft for Kids Foundation will donate craft supplies to charities that care for Australian children who are physically, emotionally, financially or geographically disadvantaged. Expertise Events are also committing their craft experts to design and produce projects that they will teach the children to make at special events. You are invited to bring in your unwanted craft supplies and place them in the special Craft for Kids Foundation area at the show. Your donation will be stored in Expertise Events’ warehouse then delivered to charities once or twice yearly, as agreed. Craft items you can donate include yarn, fabric, paper, lace, braid, craft tools, glue, embellishments. Items that won’t be accepted include: money, unfinished projects, knitting needles, crochet hooks or pattern books. Organised by
